The Impossible

A tsunami is caused by a series of different natural disasters that happen

underneath the earths oceans, it can be caused due to an earthquake, landslide, volcano
and even in the rare case an asteroid, but in most cases it is caused by an earthquakes,
When the crust moves in an upward motion, which displaces the water then creates an
upward wave these waves can reach up to 100 feet and can move at the speed of 500
miles an hour. Some tsunamis can be very small and go unnoticed. It has been proven that
almost 80% of all tsunamis happen in the Pacific Ocean. Sadly the first wave of a
tsunami is not the strongest, the wave gradually gets bigger and stronger, the waves that
follow the first initial wave is called a wave train. The word tsunami translates in English
as a Harbor wave. It originated in the Japanese language.

There is one tsunami I want to focus on particularly. It was the tsunami that hit in
Thailand on December 26, 2004 it killed at least 228,000 and left 230,000 people
missing. A 9.1 earthquake hit 30km under The same tsunami hit 11 countries from
Thailand to Africa.

The movie I watched was called the impossible. It is based of a true story, I found
an interview that Maria the mother did in 2006, She has a beautiful family of five which

includes herself, her husband Quique and their three sons Lucas, Tomas, and Simon.
They were vacationing over Christmas break in Thailand, they were staying in a hotel just
off of the beach in Phuket Thailand( the first island to get hit ) on boxing day they were
relaxing at the pool, it was like any normal day said Maria then she heard a horrible
sounds and thought it must have just been her mind because everything around her
seemed perfect then a black wall appeared that didnt look anything like a wave and
swept her family away, they were all separated and feeling helpless. She explains her
feelings as she was under water, She felt fear and sadness, she remembers hitting walls
and them tumbling but she couldnt feel physical pain but the feeling of drowning was
like being in a spin dryer she was underwater for 3 whole minutes and her lungs were
full of water she grabbed a tree and came up for air and she was terribly injured and
needed medical attention immediately but there were not hospitals standing near by and
she just wanted to find her family. The long journey the family goes through was all
worth in in the end when they were reunite which after a disaster could be considered
impossible.
