Aim: To determine how the radius of a hole affects the rate of draining in a bottle of

water.

Hypothesis: The radius of the hole will be proportional to the square root of the time
taken for the water to drain.

Variables:

Independent:
o Radius of the hole (0.5cm, 1.0cm, 1.5cm, 2.0cm and 2.5cm)
Dependent:
o Time taken for 0.5dm3 of water to drain.
Controlled:
o Plastic bottle size and shape (Coca Cola 600ml bottle)
o Temperature (Room temperature, 24C approx)
o Pressure (Room pressure, 1 atm approx)
o Volume of water used (0.5dm3)

Materials:

15 600ml Coca-Cola bottles

Distilled water
Measuring cylinder (0.5dm3)
Measuring cylinder (1dm3)
Stopwatch

Using the thermometer measure the room temperature every one minute throughout
the experiment and record the results.
Using the barometer measure the room pressure every one minute throughout the
experiment and record the results.
With the rule, measure the amplitude of the compass to be 0.5cm.
Draw a 0.5 radius circle in a paper and, using a scissor, cut it.
Place the circle over the bottle in order and cut it from the bottle using the cutter.
Close the bottle with the bottle cap

Using the 0.5dm3 measuring cylinder, measure 0.5 dm3 of distilled water.
Pour the 0.5 dm3 inside the bottle, through the hole using the funnel.
Hold the bottle using the clamp and attach it to the universal stand.
Place the 1dm3 measuring cylinder with the funnel directly below the bottle.
Remove the bottle cap and press the start button from the stopwatch
Stop the stopwatch when the water from the bottle has drained completely.
Record the time measured
Using the 1dm3 measuring cylinder, check that the volume of the water drained is
0.5dm3
Repeat the steps 5 to 12 three times.
Repeat steps 3 to 14 using 1.0 cm, 1.5 cm, 2.0 cm and 2.5 cm amplitude for the
compass.
Average the results for time for each radii value
Graph the square root of the averaged time values against the radii values.
If the previous graph does not show a direct relation, draw other suitable graphs
until finding the correct relation.
Analyze the results.
