Philosophy of Classroom Management

What is classroom management and how will it be used in my classroom?

Classroom management is comprised of classroom rules and procedures
used to not only to operate class effectively; but also, provide consistency for
learners. A classroom should be managed in a way that empowers students
with the ability to grow, succeed, and gain responsibility through the
implementation of high expectations. Effective classroom management does
not conform a student to the teachers standard; rather the student should
develop and embody their own set of personal standards concurrent with the
classroom expectations. Linda Albert teaches in her Cooperative Discipline
model that effective classroom management results in, and is derived from,
every student feeling capable, connected, and as if they are contributing. It
is through having clear and concise expectations along with a robust system
of instruction and assessment that leads to both effective student learning
and classroom behavior.

I have found that my personality best lends itself to instate management
strategies such as Choice theory along side the Nurtured Heart Approach to
ensure my students responsibility for their own learning. In an art room it is
often times seen that the effort put in by the student is directly proportionate
to the final product. By managing my classroom in a way that allows for
students to take pride and responsibility in the process and product of their
artwork I am ensuring comprehensive learning and a meaningful experience.
One way that I will make sure that this happens is by creating classroom
routines and procedures based off of the research of Wong and Wong. I
believe that a prepared and consistent teacher establishes an effective
learning environment for all students.
I believe in art as a means of empowering students to find their own worth
and develop their own personal efficacy through the expansion of their skills
and talents. It is in this belief that I will start my classroom off running from
the first day to set the tone and expectations. I believe in constant clearly
communicated expectations to ensure student participation and success.
However, I also recognize that students interact better with teacher with
whom they respect, I will earn this respect by also genuinely caring for and
pursing my students to achieve their potential. Management means that
students have something to do every minute in class from bellwort to sponge
activities.
The most important aspect to classroom management is the tangible and
intangible classroom climate. Students need to feel safe in a consistent and
structured environment. The freedom to both fail and succeed is absolutely

essential in an art classroom and for this to happen the tone must be set
before hand assuring each student of their own personal worth and skill. It is
for these reasons that I adopt Cooperative Discipline, Nurtured Heart
Approach, and Choice theory as key influences on my classroom
management.
