GROUP SUMMARY
Counselors Name: Kristy Walter
Internship Site: Interlake High School
Group Information
Group Name: Latina Support Group
Group Session: #7
Presenting Problems:
All of these students were referred to me because of academic struggles,
behavioral issues and struggles at home. They all come from single parent families and
in most cases have witnessed domestic violence in their homes. All members are on
free/reduced lunch and are 10th graders who identify as Latina/Hispanic. The main
focus of this group is to increase connectedness among Latinas at Interlake High
School, identify systems of support in the community and the school, explore academic
opportunities in high school, and improve communication skills.
Main goals of this meeting:
The primary focus of this meeting was closure. We began with a 10-minute
discussion of a homework assignment from the previous week about college/
scholarship search and then finished with the activity on the video. The goal of this
activity was to improve connections among group members and increase self-esteem. I
also wanted each member to have a concrete reminder of their experience to take with
them after the group had finished.
Theme/Content:
The main theme of this session was closure and discussing likes/dislikes from
the group experience. The closure activity provided a way for group members to share
positive thoughts about one another in a safe way while also being given a party favor
from the group experience.
Interpersonal dynamics between the leader and group members:
As this is the last session, the video you are seeing shows a very relaxed and
respectful dynamic. The group had a very positive dynamic because most of the
members were acquainted before the start of this group. Two of the members are good
friends and we had to address several instances where they would only speak to each
other, but in this last session that dynamic lessened because of the activity.
Multicultural factors:
As all the girls in this group are Latina and both leaders are white, we addressed
this issue at the beginning of the session. I focused on asking about cultural values
instead of telling as a way to open conversation and help them educate me as a leader.
