Lesson Plan Format

Class: 6 Blue

Date: 19/5/14

Time: Start:
Finish:

Key Learning Area: Science

Lesson Topic: Cyclones, Hurricanes and Tornadoes

Recent Prior Experience:

Students have learnt about different types of natural disasters. They have also watched some videos on the effects of natural disasters on the
environment. Students are able to name the various types of natural disasters and discuss the features of these.
Syllabus Outcome(s):

Indicators of Learning for this lesson:

Assessment:

ST3-9ES: explains rapid change at

the Earths surface caused by natural
events, using evidence provided by
advances in technology and scientific
understanding

- describe using examples of hurricanes, how natural

geological events cause rapid changes to the Earth's
surface

-Students will present to the class the

cyclone they chose to research

- understands the impact that natural geological events

have on humans

- Research criteria will be given to

students
-Teacher collects students work

- investigates a recent Australian example of the effect on

the Earth's surface of extreme weather conditions, eg
cyclones,
Any safety issues to be considered:
-Ensure that charging laptops are used close
to the power point so the cords are not a
tripping hazard
-Ensure that students do not have water
bottles next to Samsung tablets or laptops

Resources:
-Science K-10 Syllabus
-Youtube video on Cyclone Christine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1x5bymoD8c
-Interactive game: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/outreach/games/canelab.htm
-Samsung tablets and Laptops

Teaching Strategies / Learning Experiences:

(How it is taught)
Write detailed steps showing what the teacher (T) will do
and what students (Ss) will do.

Resources and Organisation:

T starts a discussion with Ss about

hurricanes

10-15
minute
s

-T asks Ss what they already know about hurricanes

-Ss share answers on their knowledge about hurricanes
-T explains that Ss will be working in pairs to research a
cyclone in Australia.
-T talks about cyclone Christine that hit Western Australia
last year.
-T plays a short YouTube video for Ss on cyclone
Christine
-T asks Ss various questions about the video:
What effects did cyclone Christine have on the
environment?
How were humans affected by this cyclone?

-YouTube video

-T shows Ss the create a cane game they can have a

turn at in pairs:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/outreach/games/canelab.htm
-T explains that the aim of the game is to find the ideal

-Samsung tablets/Laptop
-Science books

DEVELOPMENT

T shows Ss a hurricane game they can

have a turn at.

conditions for a hurricane

-T explains the higher points Ss receive, the higher
chance there will be a hurricane in those conditions.

Ss work in pairs researching a cyclone

that occurred in Australia

30
minute
s

-T explains to Ss that they will be working in pairs to

research a hurricane that occurred in Australia
-T explains to Ss that they are writing their information
pretending they are a journalist
-T goes through the research criteria with Ss that will
guide them when looking for information.
-T explains to Ss that they are not allowed to use
Wikipedia for this task
-T asks Ss what kind of language they should be using in
this task
-T emphasises the use of descriptive language
-T sends Ss to collect a laptop or Samsung tablet
-T informs Ss that they will be sharing with the class their
work so must work efficiently

CLOSURE
Ss present their work to the rest of the

10

-Ss share their research with the rest of the class

-Science books

class

minute
s

-If more than one pair chose to research the same

cyclone then they will be able to add information that
wasnt mentioned.
-T collects Ss work

Hurricanes and Tornadoes Research Task:

Name of Hurricane/Tornado
Map of where the hurricane
occurred
How long did the natural disaster
last?
What was the effect on the
environment?
How were people affected by
this?
