Reflection on Teaching February 27, 2015

The notes written when I came right out of teaching the class:
Kids behaved better than I expected.
(re-adjust camera position)
Get content down clearer.
The reflection written using MMS Observation Format after reviewing
the video:
Domain 1- I planned my lessons using standards, approved curriculum
and district materials. I am familiar with the students and Middle
School student characteristics in general. I followed the lesson outline
in the math book for content and aligned the presentation with the
Workshop Model format adopted by the school. I understood the
concepts I was teaching, but felt I could get the content deeper
ingrained.
Domain 2- I tried to establish an environment of respect and rapport,
using a modulated tone, please and thank you, and attention for
listening. I tried to be clear about classroom procedures. The students
in this class have difficult behaviors to deal with. (Talking and ignoring
the teacher more often than usual with Middle School Students.
Fighting, annoying and tormenting their peers. Breaking items and
being disrespectful to peers and adults.) I was pleased that the class
behaved much better than I had expected. They attended to the lesson
quite well for them. Distracting behaviors were minimal compared to
their usual behavior. I was up in front of the class a lot as I was
establishing the foundation for future work. I also felt that I needed to
be in camera range as I was video taping this class. I had the students
arrange their seats so that they could focus better.
Domain 3- Students were engaged in the lesson. One student who
rarely contributes to class discussion was raising his hand to answer
questions. I tried to communicate clearly and accurately. I used polite
words and tone when speaking to students about behavior, using the
students names to get their attention and stating the expectations. I
used wait time, reminders and refocusing. I provided my mentor
teacher with my lesson plans for this class. We watched the video
together. Her only suggestion was to have the students glue a copy of
the class expectations into their math notebooks.
Domain 4- After this class, I felt good. The class had gone better than I
expected in regards to student behaviors and student engagement. I
felt I was professional in my own behavior and in my interactions with
the students and the classroom teacher. I realized I needed a way to

keep track of Perseverance grades, absences, and class grades. I had

no need to communicate with parents at this time. When I spoke with
the teacher after class, he said I had done a good job. He had no
recommendations at this time.
