LEARNING & TEACHING STRATEGIES

Warm Up (5-7 Minutes)
Instruct students that when the whistle blows, this means to stop, freeze on the spot and
look at the teacher.
Alphabet soup: Explicitly teach the rules of the game:
- Everyone must stay within the borders of the half basketball court.
- Keep eyes open, so we dont run into each other.
Students must move around the space by whatever means is instructed such as, jogging,
hopping, skipping, galloping, leaping, e.t.c. When an alphabet letter is called out and shown
students must freeze on the spot and form the letter using their body. (Allow 5 seconds for
all students to form the letters). Repeat activity several times (2-3 mins).

RESOURCES/EQUIPMENT

Whistle
Large A4 alphabet letter
cards

Challenge the students by calling out short words, and show using the alphabet cards.
Students must form these words in small groups. (Provide extra time for all groups to form
the words). The words could be those found on students vocabulary lists, repeat activity for
3-5 words. (3-4 mins).
Transition: The whole class must create a very large letter O all together.
Stretching (1-2 Minutes)
Stretching exercises focussed on the arms, shoulders, and legs.
Skill
Development
(15-20
Minutes)

Skills and Drills

Explicit Instruction: Catching (1-2 mins) Introduce the skill to the class, Today we are
practicing our catching skills.
Catching cues:
1. Track the ball with your eyes
2. Get your hands ready and reach for the ball
3. Pinkies together if ball is above your waist, thumbs together if ball is below your waist
4. Soft hands pull it in
5. Move your feet so you are in the correct position
Demonstrate the skill with a student.
Development/ Practice: (5-10 mins)
Allow 5 students at a time to choose a ball or object they are comfortable with handling and
find a spot on the basketball court not too close to one another and place their ball on the
ground behind them. While they are waiting for other students to choose their ball, students
can practice their jumping jacks.
Once all students have a ball give them some activities to practice.
- Can you throw the ball up a little and catch it? (Allow ball bounce for students with
special needs (SN), or lap catches in a wheel chair (WC)).
- Can you throw the ball higher and catch?

A variety of objects and

balls; bean bags, balloons,
balls of wool, different sized
balls (tennis beach balls)
Enough for one per student.

Heidi Gabrys S00135390

-

Can you throw the ball up, touch shoulders and catch?
Can you throw the ball up, clap once and then catch?
Can you throw the ball up, sit on the ground and catch?

Monitor and provide specific feedback to students as you walk around.

Choose 2-3 students with good form to demonstrate their skills to the rest of the class.

Transition: Count off students either a 1 or a 2. All number 2s sit down on the ground and
place their ball behind them. All numbers 1s bring your ball and place it in the container.
Teacher then pairs students up.
Explicit Instruction: Partner catching (1 min)
We are going to practice catching with a partner, when we are throw the ball to our partner
we must:
- Aim for their hands
- Throw it gently
- Make sure they are looking before throwing the ball
- Call their name before throwing
Catchers must remember to:
- Stand ready and in position
- Arms and hands ready
- Eyes tracking the ball
Modifications: the ball is bounce passed to the catcher, or use a bigger ball for easier
catching. Or smaller balls to challenge students.
Demonstrate the activity with a student.
Students practice catching and throwing the ball to one another, signal start and finish with
the whistle. (1-2 mins)
Monitor and provide specific feedback to students as you walk around.

Heidi Gabrys S00135390

Choose 1-2 pairs of students with good form to demonstrate their skills for the rest of the
class.
Blow whistle, who ever has the ball place it on the floor between their feet. Everyone listen
for instructions.
Follow the leader partner catch and throw: (3-5 mins)
Which ever student has the ball is the leader and the other student is the follower. The
leader must move around the space of the basketball court, by skipping, jogging, hopping,
jumping, e.t.c. The follower must do the same. When the whistle is blown, everyone must
stop and start practicing their partner catching and throwing. When the whistle is blown
again, students swap roles and move around the basket ball court again. Remind students
that we must watch where they are going and move only as fast as comfortable. Repeat
several times for 3-5 mins.
Pack up: All students without a ball form a sitting circle. All students with a ball, must return
the ball to the container and join the circle.
Cool Down
(5-10
Minutes)

Students are sitting in a circle. Perform a few cool down stretches.

Discuss with students which activities or games they know involve catching a ball.
Ask students which is harder or easier: tossing a catching by yourself or with a partner?
Why?

LEARNING & TEACHING STRATEGIES

Warm Up (5-7 Minutes)
Instruct students that when the whistle blows, this means to stop, freeze on the spot and
look at the teacher.
Beach ball madness: Explicitly teach rules of the game.
-

Everyone must stay within the borders of the half basketball court.
Keep eyes open, so we dont run into each other.

The class is split into two teams, one teach has the sashes the other teams doesnt. The
idea is to keep the beach ball from landing on the floor and keeping the ball from the
opposite team. Students must not be standing still, they must be moving their feet. The ball
can be caught, if caught you must freeze on the spot and throw the ball to someone else in

the team. The ball can be hit up into the air with hands and head. Who ever has the ball at
the end of 30 seconds scores a point. Play the game for 5 mins, with 30 second rounds.
Transition: Blow whistle, all students must make their way over to the goal circle by
performing different arm movements. Waving, wobblying, clapping. When they reach the
circle they must find a spot with enough room around them, so as not to be touching anyone
else.
Stretching (1-2 Minutes)
Stretching exercises focussed on the arms, shoulders, legs and upper body.

Skills and Drills

Revise the previous lesson about catching and remind students of the catching cues.
Explicit Instruction: Throwing (1-2 mins) Introduce the skill to the class, Today we are
practicing our throwing and catching skills.
Overhand throw cues:
1. Grasp the ball in one hand
2. Position yourself side onto the target
3. Point your other hand at your target
4. Take your arm back for some force
5. Step forwards with your opposite leg
6. Swing through release ball when arm is fully extended
7. Follow through with your arm in the direction of your target
Underhand throw cues:
1. Belly button should point towards the target
2. Step with your opposite foot towards target
3. Bowl the ball, use a pendulum motion with your arm
4. Follow through with your arm into the sky
Demonstrate the two throwing skills, by throwing a ball at the wall.
Development/ Practice: (5-10 mins)

A variety of balls; different

sized balls (tennis beach
balls)
Enough for one per student.

Heidi Gabrys S00135390

Have 5 students at a time choose a ball and line up along the basketball side lines. They
must place the ball on the ground and practice their jumping and landing with feet
seperated.
Once all students are lined up, allow them to practice throwing their ball against the wall.
Give students the option of moving closer or further away from the wall to assist them or
challenge them. Remind students that noone should move from the line until all balls have
been thrown, then they may retrieve their ball.
Students should be encourage to try to catch their ball on the rebound. Challenge them by;
- Can you catch the ball on the first bounce?
- Can you throw the ball, clap and then catch?
- Can you throw the ball, turn in a full circle and catch?
- Can you catch the ball from wall rebound?
Modifications: larger, lighter balls for easier throwing and catching, or smaller balls to
challenge students.
Monitor and provide specific feedback to students as you walk around.
Choose 1-2 students with good form to demonstrate their skills for the rest of the class.
6 skittles or cones
Transition: Students must walk bounce their ball back to the container and then sit in a
circle.
Skills practice: Modified Skittles Dodgeball (15-20 mins)

Colored sashes

Explict Instruction of the Rules:

2 flat hoops

The team wins if all 3 cones on the opposing team have been knocked out or all the team
has been hit out with a ball. The game is played over the whole basketball court. The 3
cones are placed in the goals area at each end and the hoops placed on either side.
Students should still be wearing their sashes from warm up activities, so this will form the

two teams.
-

Balls can only hit from waist down, anything above this the thrower is out
If you catch or possess the ball you freeze on the spot and throw it
If you catch the ball on the full, the thrower is out
Players can not cross the midline and once a skittle is knocked over it stays down
Students who are out are sent to jail (hoops), first in first out, a student can get out of
jail if the ball is thrown to them from a team mate and they catch it.

The game continues until time is up or there are only 2-3 players left on each side.
Modification: Everyone gets out of jail if the ball is caught, so no one is left in jail too long.
One skittle can be nominated as the life saver, where if it gets knocked down, anyone on the
team trying to knock it down who are in jail can come back in. Use more or less balls to
increase or decrease difficulty of the game.

Pack up: Everyone in jail must collect an item each and bring it back to the front and the
players who won will collect all the colored sashes.
Cool Down

Students are sitting in a circle. Perform a few cool down stretches.

Heidi Gabrys S00135390

(5 Minutes)

Ask students if they have thought of any other ways we could play the game.
For the privledge of lining up first, students must name one of the catching or throwing cues.

Lesson evaluation:
8. Was the aim of the lesson achieved?
9. Where students able to achieve the objectives?
10. Was the lesson flexible enough to cater for diversity in the class?
11. What could have been done differently?
12. What worked well?
13. Were the instructions clear/unclear? Why?
