There Is A Ladye
Jerry Weseley Harris
There is a Ladye is a contemporary musical setting of a Renaissance period text
by Thomas Ford. Ford was a composer, lutenist, viol player and poet attached to
the court of Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, son of James I, who died in 1612.
This musical setting has been a great exploration of legato articulation and unison
singing.
Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika
Enoch Sontonga, arr. Larentz-Jones
Nkosi Sikelel iAfrika was composed in 1897 and rst publicly sung in 1899.
This piece was commonly sung in native day school and further popularized by
the Ohlange Zulu Choir that visited the Rand giving concerts. When the African
National Congress ourished, its leaders adopted this piece as a closing anthem for
their meetings, and this soon became a custom in the other provinces in connection
with all types of Bantu organizations. Of late, the black races of the Union and the
Protectorates have somehow by tacit assent adopted it as their recognized national
anthem, sung before royalty and on large occasions.
God bless and preserve Africa.
Let her glory be held up high.
Please listen to our prayers;
God bless her children.
Spirit, please come down;
God bless and protect us.
Holy Spirit, please come down;
Bless us, we her children.
God protect our nation;
Please bring an end to wars and suffering.
Protect us,
Protect our nation, Africa.
Amen, so be it
Forever and ever.

Shirley Whitecotton
The poet is Madison Cawein, a famous American poet in his day. His output was
thirty-six books and 1,500 poems. His writing presented Kentucky scenes in a
language echoing the Romantic poets of Europe. He soon earned the nickname the
Keats of Kentucky. He was popular enough that, by 1900, he told the Louisville
Courier-Journal that his income from publishing poetry in magazines amounted to
about $100 a month. His poem, set to music by Shirley Whitecotton, likens music
to the growth and existence of nature.

I Am Not Yours
Z. Randall Stroope
I Am Not Yours is a stunning poem by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933), American poet
and lyricist. Born in St. Louis, her major poetic themes were love, death and
natures beauty. In 1918, she won the Columbia University Poetry Price (forerunner
of the Pulitzer Prize). A product of her Victorian upbringing, she never experienced
in life the passion that she so well expressed in her poetry. Nevertheless, her legacy
as a poet still towers into the twenty- rst century, and her eloquence continues to
grace the lives of all who read her poetry.
This setting of the work, by composer Z. Randall Stroope, portrays the intimacy
and longing of a life that is searching for an elusive completeness and total
connection to another being. One voice begins the work, and seems steadfast in
its plight (single tone), even though surrounded by many other voices. Eventually,
the inherent gentle caressing of the lines portray one overcome with emotion (O
plunge me deep in love--put out my senses...), and a full, con dent sonority rises
up in an unrestrained outburst. But the single voice leads away, remaining lost
as a candle, lost as a light...but not lost in the person of whom they dream.
The Music of Living
Dan Forrest
Dan Forrest is a contemporary composer who received his doctoral degree in
composition from the University of Kansas. This piece has been a study in two
different types of compositional contrast: use of both simple and compound division of the beat and open and closed harmonic voicing. It is an exuberant setting
of a text teeming with joy and optimism.
