My role as an educator

I believe that as educators, we have made a conscious decision to become role

models for the children we teach. We are there as a positive influence in their lives
and we show this through our creation of positive and respectful relationships with
every child. I believe it is my role as an educator to build safe and supportive
environments within the classroom. These environments can be seen when there is
a passion for learning fuelled by excitement and curiosity. As an educator, it is my
responsibility to be constantly engaged in professional learning both individually, with
my colleagues and with the children. It is important that I make a habit of critically
reflecting on my teaching and using this to think about links between my beliefs, my
knowledge of theories and my practice. It is important to use this understanding to
develop my professional growth and become aware of the different ways in which I
can better cater to the needs of the students. I believe in the importance of gaining
an understanding of childrens lives, their interests and their personalities. By gaining
this understanding of the social context in which they live, can help improve the way
in which the curriculum is designed to cater to their needs and interests.
Children
I aim to ensure that every child I am teaching, will feel valued and welcomed as a
member of the school community. I believe in creating an environment where
diversity is encouraged and that all children feel included. My goal is that diversity is
viewed as a positive opportunity where we can learn from each other and support
each other both socially and academically in our school community. I will ensure that
there is a shared positive attitude towards inclusion and diversity. I believe that
children learn in such different ways and we need to reflect this in our teaching. I
believe that students learn best when there is positive motivation and they are able
to be interactive and involved in their learning. By following an inquiry based style of
teaching, we can help tailor the curriculum to reflect the childrens interests and
develop lessons that students are able to engage in deeply. I believe that since
children do learn differently, this needs to be taken into account when assessing
learning that is occurring. Further to this, there needs to be a range of assessment
forms and reasons as to why assessment is occurring. I believe that we can learn a
lot about students understandings from their discourse within the classroom and key

questioning rather than simply focusing on one approach of standardised testing. I

believe my approach to classroom behaviour management would be to create a
student-centred environment where they are responsible for their own behaviour and
understanding how this affects their learning and others around there. By creating
rules together, I believe is a way of being proactive towards behaviour management
as there is a shared understanding of what is expected in the classroom rather than
taking a reactive approach.
Families and Communities
I believe that families and communities play a huge role in childrens learning. I
believe that we need to value what we can learn from families and communities and
actively seek their participation and involvement in the school environment. As an
educator, I aim to build strong and supportive relationships with different community
stakeholders including families, local members of the community and organisations. I
believe there should be plenty of opportunities for open communication between
parents and educators. I believe in drawing on resources such as colleagues and
other members of the community. Collaboration between staff can create supportive
relationships that can provide educational growth.
