Sanctuary for Brazil

Executive Summary
The mission statement for Sanctuary for Brazil is To supply people within Brazil that
have inadequate housing conditions with a clean, dry, and sustainable place to live; to collaborate
and find the best solution possible in a realistic world; to embrace the challenges that show
themselves and make them into great experiences.
Our business is all about helping those living under the poverty line in Brazilian slums.
We noticed that people were living in houses built out of old wood, plastic and trash. The
Brazilians we are helping started out living in these slums, and werent given a real chance to
sustainably provide for their families. Now we know we cant really change that, but what we
can change is how they live in these slums. Whenever natural disasters happen these people lose
their houses, and have nowhere to go. Our business will give these people that have nowhere to
go a place to stay and live there life as they choice.
We are taking old and unused shipping containers, and refurbishing them into a suitable
living space. We offer our homes in 20ft. and 40ft. models. Electricity is in the premium houses
but, for a cheaper cost you can get the same size without electricity. They will not have to worry
about heating. They all come with a wood stove, a water collection, and filtration system.
We are Sanctuary for Brazil (SFB) and opened our doors on Monday the 20th of April,
2015. We were founded by Austin Munroe, Ben Glenn, and Thane McGrath. Austin Munroe is
our social networker, he gets the word out about our business. Thane has been working on the
models of the shipping containers that are being refurbished as small homes. Finally Ben, is the
leader, he directs everyone on their work and helps keep the business on the right track.
Our biggest hope for this business to thrive and be alive for a long time. Not for the
money, we want this to thrive for the people. They benefit the most from this and they deserve it.
We are social entrepreneurs, we strive to help the people of Brazil and create a system changing
solution and give a new chance. They work every day to support them and their loved ones. It
will give people with nowhere to go a sanctuary and a safe home
Market Analysis
We are in the Social Services Industry, we are supplying these people with adequate
housing to help them get by after natural disasters or their current inadequate housing. We are
helping people living in poverty within Brazil. These hard working people have families that
have just lost their homes or need a new ones. Over the last 20 years there has been a significant
rise in natural disasters within Brazil. The number of floods stands out the most. Companies like
Red Cross and other disaster relief companies have been there to help but only using band aid
solutions. For example, these places give out care packages or temporary housing. Billions have
been spent on these disasters relief to get people back up on their feet.
11.5 million Brazil men, women and children live in slums and live below the poverty
line. This is roughly 5% of the population in Brazil that don't have a sustainable home to stay in.

The people that live within Brazilian slums are more populated around cities for work. About
still lives outside city limits in rural areas. 44% of all people living in slums are within 3 major
cities. These cities are Sao Paulo, Belem, and Rio de Janeiro. Most of the slums in these cities
are along hillsides that are prone to landslides, if there is significant rain downfall. More
undeveloped areas in Brazil have more floods and landslides.
Slums are not known to be the cleanest places or to have the most lawful people. Brazil
produces more than 161,000 tons of solid waste every day (Brazil, Para. 7). Thats why families
that live in the slums want to stay away from the gangs and drug violence. More than 10,000
people died from Police shootings in slums between the years 2001-2011. The homes they live in
aren't what represent the people. Its what is inside the houses that shows their true personality.
$216,388,410 Million are spent each year in Brazil on drugs. This money could be going to
houses for the people that need somewhere to live.
Whenever they are evicted by the government and told to move they have no choice to
do it or not. One of the most current places this happened was in the last years world cup. A total
of 15,000 families had to move out of their homes that were destroyed and put into tents and left
without a home. The government of brazil moved these people to create the stadium that the
games were played in starting in Brazil is our first major concern to give these people without
homes a place to go after a natural disaster or if they have an eviction notice for a stadium just
like the world cup construction. With all of these people being displaced and left without homes
our market is growing in size.
Business in the local area that are improving the housing situation of people within slums
consists of a small group. To begin, one of the main groups that our business is going up against
is Habitat for Humanity: Brazil. We are better than this organization for multiple reasons. Our
solution to the homeless or in need is a long term plan that doesn't just help them recover but
helps them live the rest of their life. Another reason we are better than Habitat for Humanity:
Brazil is because we are localized and our main and only focus is on the people of Brazil. If
something else happens in the world we will stay with the people unlike the habitat who will
move on to help the others. Once the storm is over the company moves away to the next people
in need. We will stay with the people of Brazil for as long as they need the homes we supply
What sets us apart from the rest of the housing companies in Brazil is our quality, safety,
affordability, and we are ready to act when a disaster acts on its own. Our response time will be
immediately after the storm happens or when the government acts and moves these people. Our
representatives will go and meet these people ask them and show them what we can do for them
with no catch. The quality of our homes is the best we can make it in an affordable range. They
are super energy efficient using the sun as a heating and lighting sources when possible. To get
water you don't even have to leave the house with the storage and filtration of rainwater from the
roof it comes right out of the tap. The spray foam that we use for insulation will keep at solid
temperature that can stay the same in hot and cold conditions. It also takes up very little space
leaving more for the family inside it. A big problem people have with their current homes is they
have no electricity or it cost so much they waste tons of money on it. In our nicest model homes

we have solar panels that supply the people within them with the average wattage needed to run
the basis that the family has.
Service and Product Line
The product that Sanctuary for Brazil will provide is new homes to the remote areas and
slums in Brazil. Unlike any other disaster relief organization we stay with the people and help,
grow, and live a successful life. Our homes are unique and provide everything a family needs to
restore and create a better living condition. Our leading product is the 20 foot base model home
which will be mainly for temporary and recuse homes after natural disasters. No one has
movable houses after natural disasters in places like Brazil. This is our most affordable model
for families in Brazil and our most advertised product. This model will cost $3,000 to construct.
After our company has developed its presence in Brazil we will begin branching out into the
other homes we provide. The 20 foot and 40 foot premium models will be at higher cost but will
have built in power and water to provide sustainability to these families. Both have everything
that a family needs to live comfortably. Our startup money will cover the cost of these homes
and make it favorable for families to purchase with our low payment plan. The product itself
will be built from a large shipping container, a basic wood stove and beds. This is the base for
every home that we provide and will be included in each product.
Each product that we provide will be created from a reused shipping container as the
shell of the home and cost around $1,800 for a 20 foot container and $2,000 for a 40 foot
container. This is the base cost for our homes and will change depending on how extensive the
home with be developed. For heat, there is a wood burning stove and skylights for natural light.
All models come equipped with these to meet the basic needs of individuals. It is important that
these people are not put into a harder situation than before.
We are using old shipping containers to build are home. Our plan is to buy them from
individuals to keep the price down and reduce the amount to shipping to other countries. Our
homes will provide a safe and sustainable place for Brazilian families to live after natural
disasters or if need for a new home comes up. Our homes provide water, power and shelter.
To begin, we will refurbish the interior of the container and make sure that it never
housed toxic materials. Then we will complete an interior insulation spray made from soybeans
to help regulate heat inside the shipping containers. Due to Brazils weathers and climate, a heat
regulating insulation is required. We then place an interior wall against the insulation to make the
home more appealing and home like. Then using a stroke power cutter to cut through the
container will we place operable skylights for ventilation and passive solar light. Depending on
the model an electrical system will be installed to provide the required needs of humans.
Creating these shipping containers a multitude of material will be required. Making these
shipping containers a stable living environment in Brazil we will need to add ventilation,
insulation, doors, windows and a heating system. For people to live in these house, they water
and a place to cook their meals will be added. This will create a more a healthy lifestyle for
these people so they will not have to travel long distances to get water or cook in a clean
environment. We will get these materials from many places mostly including the internet. All of

our materials can come from online sources that will give us a better deal than in store
companies.
SFB will operate out of the United States as a headquarters to oversee the whole
operation. The actual product will be created out of the U.S. in Brazil at a construction yard that
we will purchase. Once we have this place in Brazil we can send out our houses from there to
help the people within Brazil.
Marketing Strategy
Our product will be something beneficial to the Brazilian government and its
people. We will be providing homes for post natural disasters or inadequate housing present in
slums. They will see our refurbished shipping containers that are used as houses. This approach
will show our customers, the government and its people, that we can help. With time we can
show how well we are doing and spread to other countries and help its people that don't have a
warm bed at night. We can and will provide that because we are Sanctuary for Brazil The next
step starts with home.
Our cheapest 40ft container goes at an estimated $3,550, and that's just making it. Also
the shipping them and placing them has to be accounted for. We also provide a smaller 20 foot
home for a cheaper cost for shorter lengths of time. So now, we are asking, How are people
living poverty going to be able to pay for these? The answer is finance, the first month is
completely free and after that we will start to charge. We start by evaluating their current living
conditions and income. We see if they are able to put some money away or if they live with little
or no money. After that we empathize with them. How much support do they need? By
connecting on a personal level, we hope to see exactly what they need and what a fair way to
charge them is. Another option that we offer is the chance to work with us to help us build their
home for a reduced cost, or come on as a short time worker in exchange for their home. If
problems are still happening in terms of money, we will work with these people so they can have
a home after one of Earths natural disasters or Governmental attractions .
We will also be approaching the government and presenting these idea to them. This
country does have someone already like us but we believe that we are an improvement that
brings new strategy to the market. We arent trying to compete, only solve with the problem and
hope to present a problem changing solution for the betterment of the people.
To get these homes to the people as fast and efficient as possible we have a few ways to
solve this. Our First strategy is to listen, watch and wait until one of these natural disasters
happens and send representatives in to give them our option. This will make the experiences we
have with our customers on to a first name bases and create a stronger bond. The next way this
will be marketing our homes is to find the places that the men and women work and put posters
showing our designs and prices. Finally, we will create a supportive community around our
homes that will help attract and spread our name by word of mouth. When a family moves a
home to their location it will have whatever they want it to be painted and our logo.
The demand for these homes will always be present because there will always be Natural
Disasters happening. The government making these decisions to move and displaced peoples

homes will continue to happen for the distant future. The market will never leave there is too
many people left without homes and ones that need to be replaced with a better place to live.
Organization and Management
Sanctuary for Brazil is going to be advertised as a small business in Brazil. We
will be hiring locals from the area to be our main work force. These will be the main driving
force of the company and provide the culture that we base our company around. Our product
requires physical labor to be produced, as well as understanding of some equipment. For
example the use of power tools like a stroke power cutter and welding torch. This will place
restrictions on who we hire but will still leave options for who will fill these positions. Our idea
is that locals will give the company a good face to the public to make it more appealing to those
that may not trust outsiders or large corporations.
As natural disasters occur in the area, the demand for our product will increase. We hope
that the increased need for new and durable homes will create revenue for workers and attract
locals to join our company. This is benefiting both, the consumers and the producers by making
work for the locals and us as a company looking to hire workers. To keep our business from
turning into an assembly line of production we will train each of our workers be able to complete
each part of the building process. By doing this we will not give anyone higher priority and keep
the business flowing. We plan to start by paying each one of our employees $6 an hour as a base
wage. After one year of dedicated work to the business and a very obvious dedication to our
ideas, that employee's wages get increased to $8 an hour. This will inspire our workers to stay
with us and give them motivation to work hard. This will give us the appearance of business that
can be trusted and be a system changing solution.
We will focus on hiring those that have experience in home construction and the natural
topography of the region to give us an insiders look and approach to the construction and
development of our homes. As a business we believe that we can creatively adapt to what the
people want, or at least to the point of design and style. We will also have a board of directors
that will oversee the development of this business. The board of directors will stay distanced to
be the overseers of the company. The point of having the board will also be important for making
Decisions about our workforce while remaining unbiased by personal connections to our
workers, like wages or promotions. Under the direct control of the board of directors will be a
team of lawyers and accountants. They will deal with official notices and possible threats to the
legitimacy of our company such as being sued.
Sanctuary for Brazil will also implement a program of volunteers flown in from America.
This program will involve volunteers from America that choice to be flown into Brazil to
become a short term workers. We will pay for their travel expenses and lodging and basic needs
like food. In return they help us take part in building these homes for our customers. This will be
a great experience for those that want transcript material or just the experience itself.
By hiring workers from the region that we are working in, we can gain the insiders
innovation and will gain the insight need to make the right changes to the situation. We have lots

of information on Brazil but not the perspective of an individual living in these conditions. For
the development of our business we need to meet the needs of Brazil and its people.
Our workers will not be judged by the amount of homes or product that they produces but
by how they contribute to the company. This could be ideas, invitations to design or connections
to the problem and solution.
Financials
The plan to get Sanctuary for Brazil off the ground is to start by creating a headquarters
in Brazil where we will base our company and website with connecting social media. After
launch of our website and our Facebook, Instagram and Twitter sites. We will start with getting
in Brazil and starting our business. The next step is to hire 3 employees and this will be locals
from the area. Our next step is to make three of each model that we provide three 20 foot base
models a total base cost of $3,000. Three 20 ft. foot premium models that cost a base price of
$3,500 to create. Three 40 ft. base models at a cost of $3,550 to create. Finally, our 40ft premium
model with a base cost of $4,150. This will give us the options that we need to offer the right
options to the right people. This will cost approximately $58,350 to be built. As a total price for
our company to move these homes and get them built it will cost a total estimate of $78,000.
Once these homes are built we will distribute them to these families in need. We will
allow one month pass before collecting the first payment, after that we will begin collecting the
small rent that we charge. The rent will change depending on how well the owners source of
income is and if they have enough money to make it to the next month. We charge an extra 5%
after all is paid for to pay for these homes and allow our company to grow. This added 5% is the
base for what we charge and will change depending on their current income and living
conditions. This money is going towards the payment of worker and other expensive that come
up during the development of our company. If we receive a startup of $100,000 to get a base of
operations and the production of homes started we will break even when we sell a total of 6 of
each of our homes. After we break even we will continue to hire on more worker and buy up
more containers for refurbishing. What makes these homes affordable to the people is our long
payment plan. By paying over a year or two the payment are small enough that most families
can make the payments that we assign. Also we can use the payments from other families that are
able to pay more than other to supplement us as we build more homes. This way we can continue
to make profit without losing money on some homes. Depending on which homes become more
popular in Brazil, will decide if we should continue to produce them or focus on making one.

The Direct Overseer is paid the most per hour. They have the most responsibility. When
anyone else makes a mistake that can be noticed on a big scale it is the Overseer who it reflects
on, they take the heat from it. They make all the big decision that this business will be doing.
They give the direction, they are the top of the food chain within the business.
The Marketing Representative makes the second most money. They handle all the
marketing and advertisement of the business. They also have lots of responsibility. They make
the face of the business and they dont want that turing badly. That could and would cost the
whole company if these was not done well.
Next, we have the Board of Directors, when the Direct Overseer is making decisions he
has to have ideas come from somewhere. These people give ideas and cons and pros of all
decisions that are made for the company. These people basically come up with two solutions to
whatever problem they are trying to fix and then present them to the Direct Overseer. Then he or
she makes a decision on what to do.
The Standard Builder will also have a lot of responsibility, what Im trying to say that
everyone is equally important. They build the homes for these people to live in. As we said
before with responsibility, these people have it because if these homes arent safe for people to
live or dont fulfil their purpose then thats a big problem.
Finally, we have Volunteers. They work for us out of the kindness of their hearts, give
back if you will. These are hardworking people that want to dedicate some of their time to
helping a good cause that needs attention.

This table includes the cost break down of each home model that we offer and the
expenses for each section of the home and how much money we have budgeted for each home.
This will give us the exactly how much we can spend on the individual parts of the home. For
example, the stove for the premium models cost $100 and is the limit that we can spend for each
home. Some of our homes have features that other do not must and be budgeted for each home.
The table is based on USD currency and will be used by the designers to budget the amount we
spend on the production of homes.
