Facts
Binge drinking usually refers to drinking lots of alcohol in a short space of time or
drinking to get drunk. Researchers define binge drinking as consuming eight or
more units in a single session for men and six or more for women. However, this
definition does not apply to everyone because the tolerance and the speed of
drinking in a session varies from person to person. When drinking, try to pace
yourself, avoid drinking more than you are used to and avoid drinking so much
that you get drunk.

This is even more important if you are out in risky or unfamiliar circumstances.
You can be at risk from others, and may not be able to look after your friends.
You can easily lose control of what you do or say and may make risky decisions,
thinking youre invulnerable. Binge drinking increases the risk of heart attack. It
could cause you to vomit and if youre sick when very drunk you could breathe in
your own vomit and suffocate.
The NHS recommends:
Men should not regularly drink more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day
Women should not regularly drink more than 2-3 units a day
If you've had a heavy drinking session, avoid alcohol for 48 hours

What are the effects of binge drinking?
Getting drunk can affect your physical and mental health:
Accidents and falls are common because being drunk affects your balance and
co-ordination. For example, alcohol is the single biggest cause of accidents at
home.
In extreme cases, you could die. Overdosing on alcohol can stop you breathing or
stop your heart, or you could choke on your vomit.
Binge drinking can affect your mood and your memory and in the longer term
can lead to serious mental health problems.
More commonly, binge drinking can lead to anti-social, aggressive and violent
behaviour.

How can you tell if youre a binge drinker? Even if you don't drink
alcohol every day, you could be a binge drinker if you:
Tend to drink quickly
Regularly drink more than the lower risk guidelines in a single session
If you drink to get drunk.
If you find it hard to stop drinking once you have started, you could also have a
problem with binge drinking and possibly alcohol dependence.
Primary Research
Focus group
For my primary research I undertook a focus group that will me peoples own
opinion and beliefs about binge drinking. The focus group had people from ages
16 to 20 and they were males and females.
1. Why do you drink? They drink because it a good way to socialise with
people and good when having discussions and having conversations. They
also like doing it when having nothing to do so it keeps them active.
2. What type of alcohol do you take? Beer , Wine , Champagne and
liquor
3. Where do you like drinking alcohol the most? Parties and outings
4. How does drinking make you feel? It makes them express their selves
more and brings out different personalities that gets them in their comfort
zone.
I also made a questionnaire to hand out to people.

Target Audience
Demographics Ages 16 34
BBC THREE targets individuals who are young in vision and mind-set. They
like entertainment that stands out.
BBC Three requests their shows to relate with 16-34 years old, therefore
tone is seen as something of importance. The execution of humour is vital
for the audience.
These shows must contain things that are worth talking about, television
that can be discussed with their friends, and moments that will be
remembered.

related to binge drinking, and do games about binge drinking. The main purpose
is for people to gain knowledge and understanding of binge drinking.
The format
I have chosen the game show format because I believe presenting can get the
most out of people and this will enable the show to generate answers and get
good feedback. A game show will cover various part and this is good because we
will cover different areas of binge drinking. Also because it is a game show a lot
of people will be interested and excited and will not know what to expect. When
giving back answers it will be real facts and this will get the viewers engaged
because they will be learning stuff they have not heard before. We have the
celebrity juice style so this will be very interesting or viewers especially because
the contestants will be teenagers
Question types
I would use a combination of open and closed questions. The questions have to
be open to make the interview have a flow that will allow the conversation to
generate more. By having closed questions it will get me answers that are
straight to the point and this will enable the interviewer to stay in control of the
discussion. The questioning style is very suitable because it is attractive for my
audience. It will be very informal and engage the viewer a lot.
Facts
Where can you get help with binge drinking?
If you are worried about your drinking habits, contact your GP. They will be able
to suggest ways to help you cut down your drinking, and can also refer you for
counselling or support services.
Why is binge drinking riskier than drinking normally?
Two large glasses of wine may not seem like very much. But drinking six units of
alcohol in a short space of time an hour, say will raise your blood alcohol
concentration (BAC) and could make you drunk very quickly. Drinking the same
amount over several hours, and accompanied by food, will not have the same
effect on your BAC.
Binge drinking can be seriously bad and harmful to your health. It can expose
you to injury or to unnecessary risks to yourself and others. As well as having
adverse short-term effects, binge drinking can also cause long-term effects on
your health and wellbeing.
Short term effects of binge drinking
If you drink large amounts you're likely to experience a number of physical
effects, including:
Hangovers
Nausea
Shakiness
vomiting and memory loss
FORMAT: DOCUMENTARY.
Purpose of this interview:
BBC 3 have asked us to carry out different interviews with teenagers about the
topic of binge drinking. My aim for the end of these interviews is to encourage
teenagers to stop binge drinking, and to inform them of the consequences of it.
In order to do this successfully, I will need to carry out excessive amounts of
research (primary and secondary) so I can gather evidence that will change their
view on what fun really is. I will have to make sure I clearly identify the reasons
behind teenagers wanting to consume excessive amounts of alcohol in one night
in order to have fun, we also need to find out whether this steams from family
e.g. parents drinking/being alcoholics, or whether it is solely their decision. Every
year the amount of teenagers admitted into hospital with alcohol related injuries
increases, and every year the age that they are admitted into hospital with,
decreases. One of the formats I have chosen to do is a documentary. This
documentary will be about whether or not teenagers know the full consequences
of binge drinking, and the long term effects. We got our inspiration from the
documentary party paramedics. The reason we decided to do this format is
because we thought that by doing a documentary, it would allow us to be able to
play around with the structure of the show.
The question types I think will be more effective in this documentary are open,
investigative and leading questions. I think this because open questions require
you to give a proper answer rather than yes, or no. leading questions do the
same thing in a way, as they direct the interviewee to a specific path.
Investigative questions will be useful in this documentary as one of the main
purposes of this documentary is to find out information and opinions on this
topic.
In this documentary, we will be talking to teenagers who have all kinds of
opinions on this topic, and as well as adults, and industry professionals. We will
also include facts and statistics to make the audience think. A really important
factor is that we make sure all our questions are relevant and that we do not go
off topic. Keeping our questions short and simple will be easier as we dont want
the interviewees to forget the question mid-sentence.

As you can see from some of the responses, the common denominator is
the comedy factor. From this, it was evident that our target audience
enjoyed the element of comedy, but as we know, we cannot include the
comedy element as the topic is a sensitive topic and cannot be
approached with comedy elements
Based on the results we got from our questionnaire, we have found that
the best time to show our TV programme would be in the range of 6-9pm.
The time we are thinking to air our programme is 7/7:30pm on a Sunday
as these were the most commonly chosen times and dates. Most people
who answered also said that they like Keith Lemons presenting style, and
the most common reason for this is because of the humour he adds to his
shows, but as we are doing a serious topic, we will not really be able to
add that much humour to the show as this might remove the seriousness
of the topic, so we will have to find an alternative to this in order to make
it appeal to the target audience.
Another part of primary research that we done was asking people on
social networking sites/text what they would like a programme based
around binge drinking, to include in order for it to appeal to my target
audience, here are some of the results.

SECONDARY RESEARCH:
Secondary Research
(Mine and Malcolms joint secondary research)
We have done a numerous amount of research to expand our knowledge
and understanding of binge drinking. Also by doing this research it helps
us understand more on how to approach the interview with the right mindset. Secondly one of the vital aspects is that we connect with the target
audience and that we make our points very engaging. we discovered a
video on YouTube about teenagers that binge drink.
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbJhMumorNY) The clip talked about
the different reasons on why teenagers drink. The video also stated how
it is possible to reduce the number of teenagers doing it. Furthermore it
said that most alcohol is cheaper than water and that this is what
influences them on buying alcohol than water. My opinion on this is that
they should make alcohol more expensive so that less teenagers will
purchase them and this will make them rather go to a non-alcoholic drink.
Another video we looked at was ready steady drink
(https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCC3EC70CBD085297) and the
interview style was investigative and this is what we would like to bring to
our own show. A lot of key facts and information were stated in this
documentary and we took it into our own hands to know more about this
ourselves. By doing this it will make our show look very realistic and
professional and expand our personal knowledge of the topic. Ready
steady drink cautioned the audience about the dangers of binge drinking.
It was stated in a way that it engaged the audience because it was
teenagers. It showed teenagers drinking a large amount of alcohol without
them being aware. Secondly it showed how peoples behaviour changed
and this affected the general public. This gave me an idea of what type of
people to interview and the in depth questions I should be asking.
ON THE NEXT PAGE WILL BE A SERIES OF FACTS THAT I HAVE
FOUND WHICH WILL BE USEFUL FOR OUR PROGRAMMES.
LOCATION:
The location for our Documentary will vary depending on who we plan to
include. Below is a list of places it could range from and who we could
include:
People at parties.
