Course Competencies
Course Competency 1: Demonstrate a professional work ethic as an active member of the instructional
team.
My practicum is my job so I take it very seriously; I am always early for work to allow time to go over any
changes to the day with my cooperating teacher. I have a good working relationship with all the staff that I work
with in the school.
(Learner demonstrates responsibility, regular attendance, a positive attitude, confidentiality, professionalism,
positive adult/children interactions, appropriate dress and a willingness to complete assignment tasks.)
Course Competency 2: Utilize preventative management techniques when working with individual or
small groups of students.
I work with children every day that can be very defiant and challenging at times. What I have learned works
best is to stay calm and try to remove them from the group if we are in a group. I take them to a calm place and
just start up a conversation with them. I usually can get to the core of the outburst and return to class. I now
have students ask me if we can take a break together. You have to let the students know they can trust you and
you care about them as an individual.
(Learner carries out discipline/intervenes firmly and without anger, applies the 5 Cs of Discipline, and applies
natural and logical consequences for behavior intervention.)
Course Competency 3: Apply a variety of teaching strategies appropriate to student learning styles and
needs.
I meet and greet in the parking lot in the morning before my bus arrives with my students. I greet every student
with a smile and a good morning. I help the regular classroom teacher make modifications on a daily basis for
our students. She knows I am in tuned to how the students are doing and trusts my judgment. If what they are
dong in the regular classroom I know if my students can do it or not and modify it accordingly with the
materials she has given me.
(Learner interacts positively with children, follows teachers direction, learner makes modification as needed to
meet individual students needs, learner uses appropriate games, relates instruction to student interests, uses
reinforcement toolbox, and provides developmentally appropriate materials.)
Course Competency 4: Develop positive relationships with students.
I think if you work with students with special needs or even in a regular classroom with different cultures you
have to be open minded. You have to have empathy for all students to some regard. There cannot be any
different treatment. I treat every student they same way and I help any student who asks me for help.

(Learner demonstrates ethical behavior, professionalism, maintains confidentiality, interacts positively with
children, and engages children in conversations, show empathy towards all children, and acts in a nonjudgmental manner with working with children.)
Course Competency 5: Demonstrate teaching techniques most effective for student with unique or
special education learning needs.
My cooperating teacher shares the IEP goals with me so I know exactly what each students needs. I have
students that need hands on tools to learn best. I have a student that does wonders on the smart board because he
can move around. I do what I can to make sure each student gets what they need to learn effectively.
(Learner discusses learning styles of children with teacher, incorporates multiple intelligences, and
demonstrates teaching techniques appropriate to the child, incorporating IEP goals and objectives.)
Course Competency 6: Apply affective behavior when interacting with and observing children.
I always let the students know that if they do their best and try really hard they will succeed. I talk to students
about things are going. I feel every student has the potential to learn and succeed in school and in life. It does
not matter what their home life is like or where their parents came from, I am there to help them succeed. I let
them know I really care about each and every one of them.
(Learner is non-judgmental. Learner demonstrates empathy, respect, honesty; learner is non-judgmental and
values self and others.)
Course Competency 8: Provide follow-up instruction to small groups of students.
I have been working with my students for a full school year now and I have learned how different each student
is and how they each learn differently. I am able to make the right modifications with the tools given to me. I
take into consideration each students style of learning and I adapt to them.
(Learner makes teacher approved instructional adaptations to meet individual needs, learner uses different
learning style strategies, learner relates instruction to individual student background and interest.)
What do you consider to be your major strengths as a prospective instructional assistant?
My strengths would include my passion to work with students, specifically students with special needs. I am a
kind, caring, empathetic person. I enjoy working with different regular education teachers. I have learned so
much this year working with great teachers. I am able have created relationships with so many students. I am
a great listener the students always want to tell me about their weekend or just a funny story. I truly enjoy my
job and I feel it shows.
In what areas would you to grow as an Instructional Assistant?
If I could keep learning from great teachers like I have this year that will help me continue to grow and be a
great asset to our school district. I would like to keep learning and working more with students with autism. I
have had just a few opportunities this year to help out with our autistic students. I am very interested in what
they are capable of and how to teach them and keep them engaged and stimulated.
