ESTABLISHED GOALS
G
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.G.A.1
Find the area of right triangles, other
triangles, special quadrilaterals, and
polygons by composing into rectangles or
decomposing into triangles and other
shapes; apply these techniques in the
context of solving real-world and
mathematical problems.

Transfer
Students will be able to independently use their learning to
T
Demonstrate understanding of manipulating complex/unobvious shapes into
more familiar shapes
Describe the relationship between the area of triangles, rectangles, and
quadrilaterals
Find the area of triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons in increasingly more
complex and unobvious real-world problems
Calculate the total cost of the area of complex shapes when given a cost per unit

BIG IDEAS:
1.) Recognizing the relationship
between shapes helps us grow our
understanding of geometry.
2.) We decompose and compose
shapes to find the area of
unobvious, complex real-world
shapes.
3.) We can apply our understanding of
shapes to determine properties of
many shapes and many
applications, including area,
perimeter, interior angles,
congruence, and more.

Stage 2 - Evidence
Evaluative Criteria
Entries are assessed based on a
rubric.
Project will be assessed based on a
rubric.

Assessment Evidence
CURRICULUM EMBEDDED PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT (PERFORMANCE TASKS)
PT
Complete two math notebook entries which include student reflection and
connection with the material.
Create an Area Art Project which includes triangles, rectangles, quadrilaterals
and polygons. One portion of the art project will include shapes drawn on graph
paper, with area measurements. Students will be required to compose and
decompose a variety of shapes. One portion will include copied shapes cut out of
paper and fabric on a thick piece of cardstock. As a real-world problem, there will
be different costs per square unit associated with different fabric and paper.
Students will need to calculate cost.

OTHER EVIDENCE:
Homework (three-four days a week)
Morning work (two days a week)
Quiz on area of triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Summary of Key Learning Events and Instruction
Introduce unit using student notebooks, begin with decomposing squares into triangles. This notebook entry is titled Finding
the Area of a Rectangle and a Triangle.
Explore relationship between the area of rectangles and squares using inch grid paper. Ask increasingly more complex
question culminating with students deriving their own formula for area of a triangle and explaining their reasoning.
Practice graphing triangles on graph paper with given measurements of base and height and find the area.
Discuss and model unit cost.
Complete Finding the Area of a Rectangle and a Triangle notebook entry .
Quiz Area of Rectangles and Triangles.
Introduce second notebook entry Finding the Area of a Rectangle and a Parallelogram.
Discuss attributes of a parallelogram including base and height, complete exploration activities, and derive a formula with
students.
Practice finding the area of a parallelogram.
Model how to find the area of composite shapes/polygons and complete practice sets, also students develop their own
composite shapes and find the area.
Complete Area of a Parallelogram notebook entry.
Quiz Area of Rectangles, Triangles, Parallelograms and Polygons.
Complete Area Art Project.
