Students will be able to manipulate their weekly vocabulary words by creating their own
definition and sentence.
Students will be able to independently read poems.
Students will be able define imagery.
Students will be able to write their own poem as a cowboy using imagery.
Students will have their vocabulary books and as we discuss each word, students will
document their own definition and their own sentence in the book and that can be used
as formative assessment.
After they read the three poems about cowboys and the American West, students will
create their own poems with imagery words and that will be collected as summative
evidence.

Lesson Implementation
Students will get their vocabulary books out of their desk as
well as their reading basal textbook.
The teacher will go over each of the 10 words one by one on
pgs 705 and 706. The format being: reading the sentence
given in the book, then asking the students what they
thought the word meant, then telling the students to write
their own definition and their own sentence in the book.
Words: dominated, extending, sprawling, hostile,
acknowledged, flourished, residents, prospered, acquainted,
decline.
Students will turn to page 712 titled Rhyming on the Range.
The teacher will introduce to the students that they are going

to read 3 poems about cowboys and life in the American


West. These poems are going to include imagery, which is the
use of sensory details or specific words and phrases that
appeal to at least one of the 5 senses. Poets create vivid
descriptions in their poems by using words and phrases that

appeal to the senses. After you read these 3 poems, you will
create a cowboy poem as stated on pg 714
The students read the poems individually and silently.
Students will get out a sheet of paper and create their
cowboy poem using imagery. Poem should be about a
paragraph
Students will share out their poems
Some of the language used in the poems could connect to the interests and cultural
background of some of my students.
