What Standards (national

or state) relate to this
lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely
do teachers use just one:
theyd never get through them
all.)
Objectives- What are you
teaching?
Evaluation Plan- How will
you know students have
mastered your objectives?
Step-by-Step Plan

SC.5.L.14.2 -Compare and contrast the function of organs and other physical structures of plants and
animals, including humans, for example: some animals have skeletons for support -- some with internal
skeletons others with exoskeletons -- while some plants have stems for support.
SC.5.N.2.1 Recognize and explain that science is grounded in empirical observations that are testable;
explaining must always be linked with evidence.
LACC.5.W.3.9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and
research.
LACC.5.SL.1.1: Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and
teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 5 topics and texts, building on others ideas and expressing their
own clearly.
Students will be able to compare and contrast the functions of organs and structures of plants and
animals.
Students will be able to illustrate and name a planimal with a set of randomly selected attributes.
Formative Assessment: I will assess the students individual similarities and differences chart
Summative Assessment: I will evaluate the collaborative planimal drawing

both plants and animals. Give them sheet #1 and #2. Go over the 5 different
characteristics (sheet #1)
Protection
Support
Gas Exchange
Water
Sheet #2 Go over each individual characteristic and have student fill out the
blank for each characteristic, whether its blank for a plant or for an animal.
Extend Time to apply everything theyve learned and the students will
create a planimal! An example will be placed on the board. Students will be in
3 groups of 6 with a big sheet of chart paper. Each group will be given a cup
with 5 popsicle sticks (have water, support, gas exchange, transport and
protection written on them) - 5 of the 6 students will pick a popsicle from the
cup and be responsible for drawing that characteristic of their groups planimal.
The 6th student will work with the rest of the group be the one to represent
their group and present their planimal to the rest of the class. Students will
label the part of the planimal that they drew.
Evaluation
Students will be evaluated during presentations!

Students will gain the insight that they have many similar functions/structures as plants and animals that
help keep alive.
If I were to make the planimal an individual assignment versus the group work, I could give the below level
students the blank sheet completely filled out. The on level would get it half filled and the above level
students could get the sheet completely blank.

planning this lesson

I hope that this lesson transitions from a behaviorist learning (teacher-led) approach to a constructivist
(students creating their own learning) learning approach.
