Slauson Garden

-Zoe W.
April 22nd was the first ever Slauson Garden Party. Many people gathered for garden building, hot cocoa, and sign
building. The garden looked great by the end of the garden party. The next step was to start planting and thats what they did.
Slauson garden is blooming! Many classes have been planting veggies and fruits. Ms.Coles class planted kale,
Ms.Workmans class planted sugar snap peas and even watermelon! The Garden is to the right of the deck in the front of the
school. Right by the staircase that leads behind the school.

The plants are getting bigger and bigger! Some are reaching above ground. The fun garden building doesnt have to end
at the end of the school year. You can adopt the Garden for a whole week, this summer! But we arent the only ones who think the
garden is a cool place to hang. The bunnies think that too! A bunny nest was found in one of the garden planters. Even though
those bunnies are the cutest thing, If we kept them there they soon would eat all our veggies. So carefully they were relocated.

The Slauson Garden is such a good way to get down to Earth and spend time with your friends. So remember this
summer go and adopt. Before you know it you will be eating your fruits and vegetables. Even if you cant adopt the garden this
summer, make the last couple weeks count and visit the Garden.

Tigers Dominate!

-Bruno R.
The Detroit Tigers are hitting pitchers and taking names. They are off to an historic start, with having
shutout their opponents in four of their first eight games. The question is, is this the start of a dominating
World Series run? I think so, because right now, Im not sure anyone could beat our cats. The Tigers achilles
heel last year was their crippling bullpen, but Joakim Soria has quickly fixed that with 4 saves in the first
eight games.
The Tigers hitting is red hot, with major contributions coming from Ian Kinsler, Jose Iglesias, Yoenis
Cespedes, and Miguel Cabrera. They also have speed, with stolen bases coming from Anthony Gose, Rajai
Davis, and Jose Iglesias. During the offseason, many people were talking about the improvements of the
Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians, but basically everyone forgot about the moves the Detroit Tigers
made, such as picking up Yoenis Cespedes and Alfredo Simon, and resigning the runner up for last years
MVP, Victor Martinez. These offseason pickups have made a difference, shown by the 10-2 record in the first
dozen games of the season.
The Tigers were last years American League Champion by just beating out the Kansas City Royals.
They have gone to the postseason for the last four years, and they made the World Series run once during that
time frame. Now, the rest of the division is being left in the dust, giving an opportunity for the Tigers to shine.
With all this being said, its just the beginning of the season. There is a ton of baseball to be played before any
of them can be crowned champion. As Albert Pujols says, Its not how you start the season, its how you
finish.
Is Sleep Essential to Success in Sports?

-Grace D.
Do you enjoy playing a sport? If yes, then you should sleep more because it has an effect on how well
you do during practices and games. Sleep does affect your success in sports because without sleep, you will be
tired, grumpy, and overall not on task. On the other hand, if you get good enough sleep, you will not play like
that. According to Tweentribune.com, quality sleep really does matter, especially for athletes. Iginla, an 18-year
old veteran hockey player is recommended at least 9 hours of sleep each night to perform better.
According to a Cheri Mah, who works at Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic, she studied the sleep habits
of the mens basketball team at Stanford and by extending their sleep, the team increased their 3-point and free
throw shooting by 9 percent. Overall, athletes should get at least 8-10 hours of sleep. To some student athletes
though, they have some excuses for not enough sleep, early school starting time, other after-school activities,
and homework. This can be fixed though, as studies show that just a nap can increase your energy throughout
the day. So, if youre playing any sport, be sure to get enough sleep to play well!
Dont eat meat!

-Noah P.
Vegetarianism isnt something to be made fun of, it is an actual healthy choice. It helps people with
health problems, moral, and religious objections to eating meat.
There are many different reasons why I make this argument, but these examples show that this is a
serious thing. First, it is unethical to kill for meat when vegetarian diets live and thrive. To that, most people I
know would say that it is a natural part of life, but humans have evolved to have mostly vegetarian diet. That
means that other animals have their niche in the food chain to eat other animals but we didnt. Why do you
think over 7,000 years ago people switched to agriculture? But what about hunting, you might say? Hunting
actually is just barely sustainable because it takes about 10 calories to make 10 calories, and there isnt enough
animals or space in the world to support an all hunting and gathering economy. Just because you like the taste
does not mean that nothing can replace it. Veggie meat companies are becoming more and more popular, using
tofu and soy products to make meat.
How do I know that humans have evolved to eat vegetarian? Just look at your teeth. They are not the
long, pointed teeth of carnivores, we have the flat short teeth for chewing food with fiber. Also, we have
intestines 10 times your body length, to digest plant foods when carnivores intestines are only 3-6 times their
body length for the quick digestion of meat and protein. Next, the human liver shows vegetarian traits. The
carnivore liver can detoxify vitamin A, a vitamin that comes from a meat diet. The human liver cant, which
shows that early humans didnt have problems with toxic vitamin A, so they didnt eat much meat. Lastly, we
have an appendix, but we dont need it any more, because they evolved more efficient ways to digest grains
because scientists say that the appendix was used to store grains, so they break down. As you can see
vegetarianism isnt something to laugh or sneer at, it has many dietary benefits.

The Dress Code Debate

-Kate S.
The dress code debate has always been controversial, but in the past years, people have especially argued that it doesnt exist for the
case of professionalism, but instead, sexism. I strongly agree with the opinion that the dress code is often ridiculous. Girls are constantly
anxious about being humiliated in front of all of their peers by having a teacher measure their shorts with a ruler or wear an ugly t-shirt. The
dress code also affects girls at home; expensive clothes (i.e popular leggings, such as the brand lululemon, can cost up to $90 a pair) barely get
any uses, and more clothes must be purchased to accommodate school guidelines. For female students, stores that target a demographic of
young women dont sell the kind of clothes schools expect you to wear. Most shorts dont go mid-thigh, because thats what in style, like
bellbottoms in the 70s.
The debate against the dress code isnt just financial. It promotes the sexualization of girls from age 11. Most elementary schools
have quite a liberal dress code in which students are free to express their individuality, but as soon as they reach middle school, they are told
their shirts are cut too low or their fingertips need to reach the exact end of their shorts. In many schools across the country, girls are asked to
bend over in front of their teachers in order to determine whether their skirt is of suitable length. It goes without saying that this is completely
inappropriate and absurd that the girls skirt would be what was considered obscene in such a situation. However, the widespread
punishment for not abiding by the dress code is being sent to the office to change (hence the ugly t-shirt, or another embarrassing
alternative). If a girl does not want to change into these options, she will have to wait in the office for a parental figure to bring her clothes or
she will just be sent home. Why should a girl have to miss class time, work, and possibly even a test just because shes a distraction to boys?
This is putting the male students before the girls, along with the phrase boys will be boys, which is basically saying its not the boys fault
theyre the ones being disruptive, so the girls should be punished for this inadvertent attention.
Supporters of the dress code usually claim that the dress code is established to prepare students for a work environment, but for most
of us, its a long way away. A girl would feel much more comfortable if the dress code was minimal, and school would be a little more
pleasant to attend.

How do Calculators work?

-Molly M.
Do you take calculators for granted?
You just have to type in the numbers and an
answer pops out. Have you ever thought
about how that happens? Most calculators use
chips, which are tiny wafers of material used
to make integrated circuits. They are turned
on and off, using transistors to complete math
equations. The basic equations are addition,
subtraction, division, and multiplication. But
the more transistors a calculator has, the more
complicated functions it can do.
Calculators work in a binary number
system, using only 0s and 1s to create a
string of numbers representing what you put
into it. The integrated circuits then use the
binary string of numbers to turn transistors on
and off in order to perform the equation. The
answer is then sent to the screen, where it
appears. This whole process usually takes less
than a second. Theres a lot more to it than
just punching in the numbers, isnt there?

Why Is The Sky Blue?

-Vicky W.
When you look up at the sky on a
sunny day, you might wonder, why is the
sky blue? The reason is plain old Science.
John Tyndall was the first person to
investigate to color of the sky in 1859. He
found out that when light passes through
clear fluid that is holding small particles of
electric flashes in molecules, the blue
wavelengths get more scattered than the red.
Molecules in the air scatter light from the
sun that is blue more than they scatter red
light. Otherwise, our sky would be bright
red. Only at night does some of the blue
light get moved away and the red light takes
over the sunset. Why you see red and blue,
though is because our retinas contain color
receptors which most strongly respond to
red, blue and green.

Why do People Have Pets?

-Zoe W.
There are many reasons why people
have pets. Thousands of years ago, people
mostly thought of animals as living tools, but
they can do many other things too. They can
provide milk, labor and clothing. Even though
early humans wanted animals to be living
tools, they realized they could have bonds with
animals and that those animals can be
comforting companions, relieve stress, show
us love and keep us from being lonely.
Did you know recent studies show
that in the United States, almost 75 million
families have at least one pet. The most
common pets are cats and dogs. Pets
outnumber kids by the ratio of four to one in
the U.S! Although humans in the past havent
thought of animals as companions, these furry,
scaled, and feathered friends burrowed their
way into our hearts and were all glad they did.

How Many Flowers can a Bee Pollinate?

-Grace D.
If you have ever heard that bees are responsible for what we eat or do, theyre right! Even though its impossible to calculate their role
in our lives, we know that bees play an essential role in our lives. So, what do bees do for food production? Even though bees dont grow food,
they are excellent at what they do which is pollinating plants for us! Many foods that we eat need to be pollinated by bees such as fruits,
vegetables, nuts, and other seeds. What is pollination? Pollination is transferring small pollen cells from one part of a plant to another, so plants
that can produce seeds to grow. Pollination is done mainly through insects, but bees are by far the most important pollinators. Why are bees the
best pollinators? Bees are the best pollinators because they spend most of their lives collecting pollen. Unlike other insects, pollen is a good
source of protein for them and they use this protein to feed their young. When bees collect the pollen from flowers, sweet nectar gets produced
and this nectar gives energy and nutrients to the bees. Did you know that a single bee can visit up to 5,000 flowers a day? If you think about it,
thats a big number. Did you know that to produce one pound of honey, a hive of bees must travel over 55,000 miles and visit about 2 million
flowers! No wonder bees are really called busy bees!

How to break a bad habit
-Jack M.
How can you break a bad habit? There is no surefire way to break a bad habit. There are ways to help yourself break a bad habit.
Experts have people use a variety of techniques to help people alter behavior.
Experts believe that the first step to breaking a bad habit is acknowledging that you have a bad habit. Also with acknowledging you
have a bad habit you should figure out when and why you engage in that bad habit.
Another thing experts recommend is keeping a journal of your activities and behavior. They recommend this because sometimes
people will recognize patterns that they never noticed before. For example, some people notice that they overeat when they are bored.
Once you identify the causes of the bad habit replace the causes with a good habit. For example if you get bored you could try
exercising so you dont overeat. Of course you will still get hungry but when you get hungry try replacing the bad foods with good foods.
There are many ways to break bad habits and no single way will work for everyone. Remember to stick with it, avoid temptation,
get help, and take small steps!

Can You Resume a Dream?

-Kaitlyn G.
You are in such a good dream. You finally are going towards the box that contains something that no one has ever touched. You are
finally going to beat teams at the swimming competition. You are just about to sing your heart out in the Super Bowl. But then - beep! beep!
You just remember that you forgot to turn it off on Friday night, and now you want to go back to sleep. But, you hurry just too quickly, and
close your eyes, trying to resume your good dream. Is this possible?
Studies show that it is almost impossible to resume a dream. But why is this so? It is mainly because of how the brain works at night.
Dreams occur during REM sleep (the period in your sleep when dreams are active). If you really want to resume your dream, lie still. If you do
this, you can end up in a dream-like state for just a several minutes. Moving can disrupt your most recent dream.
