Unit of Inquiry
Unit 4: How the World Works

Transdisciplinary Theme An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and
biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and
technological advances on society and on the environment.
Central Idea:
The earths natural cycle affects the things we do.

Lines of Inquiry:
Activities we do during day and night
Different seasons and how things change
Health and Safety as related to seasonal changes.
This week we focused on :

Sharing what we know about day and night as well as the four seasons. We will be using Pajama Day to
discuss what the appropriate thing to wear is for different times of the day. We will also be making some
crafts and drawing pictures that remind us of the different types of weather.

English

In Literacy this week we focus on:

Introducing our third set of CVC words: log, fun, had, hit, let, hen, ship, shop. We continue to review the sight
words that we have learned over the last few months. We are using the letter sounds to make simple words and read
them in print. Have begun to write them, say the sounds, identify words beginning with these sounds etc.
Activities we will be doing are:
Squiggle books, where we will be writing about different things we do during the day and night.
Playing a Roll & Write game to help us practice our blending and letter sounds.
Playing Interactive games on StarFall to help us review our letter sounds and cvc words.

Math

In Numeracy this week we focus on

This week we are working on strengthening our spatial awareness.


Activities done in the classroom:
Puzzles and building blocks.
Treasure hunt: children will follow a map around the school or classroom to look for a treasure.
Children will take part in an obstacle course around the classroom.

Home activities

Literacy: review with your child all the high frequency words that weve studied then encourage her/him to make
their own sentence using these words.
Numeracy: Set up an obstacle course or treasure hunt at home for your child. Use words such as on, under, next-to,
over to help strengthen their spatial awareness.
UOI: discuss Pajama day. Ask your child why he/she thinks we are wearing pajamas to school.
