Applications
Potassium Formate is used to form solids-free workover and completion fluids with densities ranging from 8.4 to 13.1 lb/gal (1,007 to
1,570 kg/m3). It can be blended with sodium formate for densities from 11.0 to 13.1 lb/gal (1,318 to 1,570 kg/m3). Potassium eliminates
the potential of formation damage due to the precipitation of carbonate, bicarbonate or sulfate compounds associated with using
calcium-base brines where formation waters contain high concentrations of bicarbonate and sulfate ions. Potassium Formate fluids are
excellent shale stabilizers for water-sensitive clay/shale formations and clay-containing sandstones. Add Potassium Formate crystals to
freshwater or existing compatible brine through the rig hopper. Blend with gentle agitation until all of the crystals dissolve. Note: Use the
Mixing Tables to obtain the desired density.
Bioassay information is available upon request. Handle as an industrial chemical, wearing protective equipment and observing the
precautions as described on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Also observe the health hazard information and emergency and
first aid procedures described on the MSDS.
Potassium Formate (dry) is packaged in 55 lb (25 kg), multi-wall, water-proof sacks and 2,204 lb (1,000 kg) big bags.
