2 Timothy 1:8-18

8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering
for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works
but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and
which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and
brought life and immortality to light through the gospel, 11 for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle
and teacher, 12 which is why I suffer as I do. But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am
convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. 13 Follow the pattern of the
sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 14 By the Holy Spirit
who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.
15 You are aware that all who are in Asia turned away from me, among whom are Phygelus and Hermogenes.
16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me and was not
ashamed of my chains, 17 but when he arrived in Rome he searched for me earnestly and found me 18 may
the Lord grant him to find mercy from the Lord on that Day!and you well know all the service he rendered at
Ephesus.

Passage:
Vs. 12 entrustment parathk 3866 - a deposit, a trust or thing consigned to one's faithful keeping - used
of the correct knowledge and pure doctrine of the gospel, to be held firmly and faithfully, and to be
conscientiously delivered unto others.
This is the same definition given to the word deposit above.
This is a little difficult b/c I can see it being translated two ways. One says what I entrusted to him for that day
the other says, what has been entrusted to me. Two different entrustments. So what is the entrustment?
Either Paul has entrusted something to the Lord and has entrusted it to Timothy. Or timothy and Paul both have
entrustments that must be guarded.
Paul has been talking about the gospel message that he is not ashamed of.
He says one reason he is not ashamed of his suffering is b/c he is convinced that he is able to guard the
entrustment.
Vs. 13 Paul is referring to what Timothy heard from Paul and that Timothy is to keep this as the pattern of
sound teaching.
Vs. 15 Paul talks about people deserting him.
Vs. 16 Paul speaks of a man that was probably killed in the line of duty a man not ashamed.
Summation so far:
The deposit that Timothy needs to keep seems to be the teaching he has received from Paul. This b/c it is
preceded by Paul specifically talking about his teaching. Right now it seems as if it would make sense if Paul
was further not ashamed b/c he is convinced that Jesus has been guarding his own entrustment. Paul is
sticking with the truth and that truth is guarded. He knows he is living by the truth. No shame here.
Book:
Do I see other places mentioned of guarding teaching?
Vs. 2:14-18 Paul is challenging Tim to be a workman of Gods word and not to indulge in quarrels.
Vs. 2:19-20 Paul comforts Tim that God knows His children.
Vs. 2:22-26 Paul is telling Tim not to be caught up in the desire to argue and prove himself. The goal is always
to restore.
Vs. 3:6-9 Paul is warning Tim of men that oppose the truth.

3:10-16 Paul is reminding Tim of the teaching and lifestyle he learned from Paul. He reminds him of teaching
from childhood, he reminds him of the power of the scriptures.
4:1-8 Paul is commanding Tim to preach what he knows to be true b/c people will not put up with the truth.
Bible:
1 timothy 6:20 Almost all of Chapter 6 is about the love of money and the following of bad doctrine that causes
people to wander from the faith (vs. 10,21). It ends with a command to Timothy. guard what has been
entrusted to your care.
1 Timothy 4:15-16 Paul commands Tim to diligent in teaching others. Watch his life and doctrine closely. To
persevere in them. The result is saving himself and his hearers.
1 Timothy is all about following good teaching.
1:6 Some have wondered away from these and turned to meaningless talk.
1:19 some have rejected these and have shipwrecked their faith.
The good deposit that Timothy is to guard is the truth that he has learned from Paul. He is to guard it by
watching his life and doctrine closely (1 tim 4;16), flee from sin pursue righteousness (1 tim 6:11, 2 Tim 2:2224), and being attentive to the Holy Spirits leading. (2 tim 1:13-14).
I also think that Paul was saying he is not ashamed b/c he knows God has the ability to guard what has been
entrusted to Paul himself. This is Pauls way of saying I know I could be wrong, but I am convinced that Gods
got my back.
