What were some of the examples we talked about that showed
how you could use proportions in real world situations?
Recipes
Animal Shelter
If relationships are equal, they form a ?
Proportion
What is the equation for direct variation?
Y = kx
When graphing a proportional relationship, the slope must pass
through the what?
Origin (0,0)

How do I find the rate of change?

What were the dependent and independent variables?

Dog (I ) / Cats (d)

When you have an equal ratio and a proportion, you have

a what?
Direct Variation

If I have a constant rate of change, the relationship is ?

Proportional

If a line thats proportional passes through the origin, what

do you think about a line that is not proportional?
It doesnt pass through the origin

ALGEBRA 1 PROPORTIONAL
RELATIONSHIPS
Doing Mathematics Tasks

Students were paired together and instructed to work

together to correct their quiz on proportions. They were
instructed to explain their answers to each other.
How do I find out if the relationship is proportionate?
You have to divide it

Why did you all choose the same answer?

Because they were the not the same number
What were not the same? Did you solve for the rate of change?
Yes. I solved it. They were different.
The rate of change were different? They werent proportional?
Yeah

ALGEBRA 1 PROPORTIONAL
RELATIONSHIPS
Why are these graphs directly proportional?
They all go through the origin

I dont see the math. How did you get to 21?

I dont understand what I did but what I did is add 15 + 6 to get to 21

Why did you pick this answer?

They have the sameuhuh cant read my writing
They have the same rate of ____
Change

On number 8, why did you choose this answer?

I dont know why I chose that, but I know what I did wrong now
They are not proportional because they didnt go through the_____
Origin
And the error the student made was?
When the x-value is 0, the y-value is 1

FINAL REFLECTION

It is extremely difficult teaching without a text book

I dont have the capability of verifying Im covering

standards and objectives. Most texts instruct you to ask
essential questions and promote discourse. I must do on my
own

On my audio, the 1st thing I noticed is I need to stop saying,

OK!

I also need to ensure that I write down exactly what I want

to ask before asking essential questions

I noticed my students lacked vocabulary. They used

pronouns instead of rate of change, proportional,
origin and direct variation

I have created Math groups. We have begun to incorporate

mini projects which require discourse between students and
teacher. The class enjoys and I am pleased with initial
progress.
