Global Learning and

Observations to benefit
the environment
By Kohler Science Teacher
Jessie Good
GLOBE is an international program composed of students, teachers, and scientists that work
together to investigate and learn
more about the environment. Students and their teachers collect and
share data with other scientists and
programs. Students in over 112
countries participate in GLOBE
data collection led by 57,581
trained teachers. The Kohler
GLOBE Program is among 24,507
other schools that also collecting
data. Over 10 million students
have contributed more than 22 billion measurements to the GLOBE
database.
The GLOBE program in Kohler
is made up of students in Biology
and Honors Biology. These students share the responsibilities of
collecting and recording atmos-

pheric data every school day.

Upper classmen in Honors Chemistry, AP Biology, and Honors
Physics contribute to the collection
of hydrology data during the fall
and spring. These students make
up Kohlers Testing the Waters
Team.
The atmospheric data collected
by students in GLOBE is entered
onto an international web-site data
base. Students enter measurements
such as high and low temperatures,
amounts of precipitation and pH,
cloud type, and relative humidity.
When combined with other data
presented by students and teachers
throughout countries around the
world, scientists can interpret and
observe changes in the environment. Overall, this program allows
every
participating
student,
teacher, and scientist to track and

learn more about our constantly

changing environment.
Biology teacher, Jessie Good,
and chemistry and physics teacher,
Dana Krejcarek, serve as advisors.

Jessie Good
Honors Biology students at
Kohler High School have recently
completed the biotechnology component of the biology curriculum.
Biotechnology is the technology of
using living things to create useful
products. Biotechnology has historically been used in the making
of bread, wine, soap, the treatment
of waste, and the production of
cheese. Selective breeding of agricultural animals and selective
practices in crop planting have occurred for hundreds of years.
Biotechnology has changed due to
the advancements of technologies
such as computers and software in
the 1970s to include the development of human insulin for the
treatment of diabetes, human
growth hormone for children, and
identification of specific genes responsible for genetic disorders,
and in some cases treatment for
those disorders.
Honors Biology students learn
and then use the steps necessary to
move a gene from one organism to
another. The process involves the
isolation of plasmid DNA, using
endonuclease restriction enzymes
to cut DNA at specific sites in the
DNA sequence, ligation of the
plasmid fragments, transformation
of bacteria, preparation and casting
of agarous gel, electrophoresis of
restriction enzyme digested DNA,
staining, viewing, and photographing the gel, and learning the
process by which scientists deter-

mine DNA fragment size.

This is the third year of the College Boards revised AP Biology
curriculum which focuses on enduring, conceptual understandings
and the content that supports them.
This approach may enable students
to spend less time on factual recall
and more time on inquiry-based
learning of essential concepts and
better help them to develop the
reasoning skills necessary to engage in science practices. This redesigned curriculum will also
provide students the experiences
necessary to design a plan for collecting data, analyzing data, applying mathematical routines, and
connecting concepts. One area of
the new curriculum, Big Idea 3
Genetics and Information Transfer,
has students conduct two biotechnology investigations. One investigation
is
a
bacterial
transformation in which Kohler
students transformed E. coli with
an ampicillin resistance gene
which was fused with the GFP
(green fluorescent protein). The
resultant ampicillin resistant bacterial colonies were grown on an
ampicillin plate and exhibited fluorescent properties with an ultraviolet light source. The second
investigation has Kohler students
completing a restriction enzyme
analysis of DNA and then calculating the sizes of restriction enzyme
fragment length and create a standard curve.

A hike through several biomes and

collection and identification of
aquatic macroinvertebrates allowed all students to practice the
concepts they had presented in
group presentations.

On behalf of the School Board and community, I would

member. Nancy was appointed to fill a board vacancy in
March, 2014. She decided to not seek an elected term
of office in the recent April elections.
In addition to the School Board , Nancy has also volunteered her time in many other capacities. She has
served one term as secretary and two terms as president of the PAO; been a room parent; and has recently
joined the soccer club. Beyond Kohler Schools, Nancy is
a legal advocate for children in the court system as part
of the Guardian Ad Litem program and is an active
member of the Sheboygan County Bar Association. In
her year on the Board, Nancy has been an engaged,
passionate member. The Board has been privileged to
have her services.
Chad Hamilton and Diane Kelly have been elected to
serve three year terms on the School Board. This will be
Hamiltons first term and Kellys third term on the
Board.
I am nominating Christina Koberstein to serve as the
Districts CESA 7 for the coming year
At the Regular Board meeting in May, Board members
will be electing Board officers.

I attended the American Association of School Administrators national conventional with mentor, Dr. Sarah Jerome,
past President, in celebration of 150 years of development
of the nations Superintendents to ensure that district
leaders have the tools and training to lead Americas
schools. Highlights include rich conversation with June
Gabler - first women AASA President, and Gary Marx - futurist and author of Twenty-one Trends for the 21st Century: Out of the Trenches and into the Future. I remain
current on national school issues and continue to connect
with leaders around the state and nation. The Boards

support of my professional development to best serve the

community is appreciated and reflects its progressive orientation.

and the districts ability to manage increased testing demands. We appreciate Ryan Miller, Technology Coordinator, for his work.

All students in grades 3-8 will be starting the Badger 3-8

exam this week. This assessment takes the place of the
WKCE and students will be assessed in Reading and
Math. The testing window is from April 13th until May
22nd. Our elementary students began testing today and
middle school will begin the week of April 27th.

PRINCIPAL SEARCH PROCESS UPDATE

We are making progress in the search for principals and
look forward to inviting the community to participate in
the input sessions for finalist candidates in the next two
weeks. We hope to name two new principals in early
May.

6 students in the 2/3 split participated in the Continental
Math League. A couple times per week during Bomber
Time students worked on solving challenging, multiple
step and higher level math problems. They completed
three in-class math meets, (one in January, one in February, and one in March) and submitted results to the national program. The top two point earners in each grade
received medals and all participants earned participation
ribbons. Mrs. Roeber will have her students continue to
work on practice problems for the rest of the school year
to begin their preparation for next year! Mrs. Roeber has
also expressed interest in starting a 4th and 5th grade
after school math team next year using the Continental
Math Leagues 4th and 5th grade program.
Our elementary students have been very busy in Spanish
this year. Our littlest learners, the 5-year old Kindergarteners have been learning greetings, the numbers 110, and color, food and body vocabulary terms. At each
grade level, Betty adds more vocabulary and practice conversing in Spanish. By the time students finish fifth
grade, students are able to identify names of characters
from the story, identify oneself in Spanish as a boy or girl,
ask who are you, identify on self by name, & practiced
saying short phrases introducing themselves. They have
practiced asking, Who is he? Who is she? What is that?
and are able to answer those questions. They have reviewed body parts and the 5 senses. They have learned

Scams
There are residents in the Village that have
been targeted by scam artists. The most
common tactic lately has been a caller identifying themselves as the IRS. They threaten
the homeowner that they will call the police/sheriff and have them arrested if they
dont pay the judgments against them. The
phones caller ID may even state IRS. These
are NOT legitimate calls. Do not give them
any money. Hang up as soon as you can.
They may have left a message if you were
out. Do not call them back. The IRS does not
phone people about judgments and we
would not pick you up for the IRS. Even
calling back some of these scam artists will
cost you. For example, by calling a (876)
area code, you will be charged up to
$10/minute. If you get targeted by one of
these or another attempt to swindle you of
your money and have questions, call our department for advice, 920-459-3877. For
more information you can go to the IRS
