Introduction:
The aim of this report is to represent brief information about crew
planning (scheduling) officer and the nature of the job in Bahrain and outside
the kingdom. Highlighting the competencies, education and skills required in
this position. Besides, this document will display the responsibilities and
opportunities in career enhancements. Moreover, recommendations from the
interviewee about to get into this position will be listed in this document.
The document is divided into three main sections, the first section
includes the prepared questions and the answers obtained from the
employee. The second section contains an online research about the chosen
job and the requirements needed to obtain this job. The last section analyses
the gathered information from both the interview outcomes and the online
research.

Interview:
At first, I managed a meeting with Nasser Al Nasser who is a crew planning
(scheduling) officer at Gulf Air Company. The meeting was in his Caribou
coffee (Ramli Mall) on Saturday the 4th of April at 3:00 pm. Before setting up
the meeting, I prepared a few questions to ask him to get some knowledge
about the nature of work, job requirements, experience needed and job
enhancements. This part will demonstrate the questions asked and the
interviewee answers:

What is the nature of the job?


First of all, my position in this company is crew planning officer with grade 12.
The job nature is to assign flight attendants on the airline schedule. Crew
planning officer must follow a certain procedure to complete the job on the
scheduled time. Firstly, scheduling department must submit schedules to
crew planning department, then crew planning officer commences assigning
each cabin crew member one month schedule, this task takes about 8
working days . After that the officer opens flight attendants line (schedules)
to rearrange flights that have not been assigned by the system due to crew
leave or courses (this job takes at least four working days).

What kind of certificates/ training/ courses required for the


job?
This job requires:

Advance scheduling computer certificate and on job training.


Flight attendant experience.
Planning and management experience in crew control.

However, this job does not require a specific Bachelor certificate.

What are the competencies required for this position?

This job requires high problem solving skills. For example; sometimes,
there is not enough man power to assign flights especially during peak
seasons (on summer).
Furthermore, this job requires patience and time management skills to
complete the job on specific time without any delay. Crew planning
officer is usually extremely busy one week before submitting crew lines
(schedules), and sometimes, crew officer has to work overtime to
submit the schedules on time.

What are the responsibilities followed by this position?

Crew planning officer is responsible for assigning crew schedule on monthly


bases, (officer receives schedules every month and he/she have to distribute
it to the crew members). Schedules must be submitted on a specific time
each month with no delay, even if the officer has to work more than 8 hours
per day.

Applied manually in the HR office of the company for flight attendant.


Did an interview and a test on language and communication skills.
Worked as a flight attendant for 8 years.
Applied again for planning assistant officer.
After 8 years, I was promoted to crew scheduling controller.
Finally, after 2 years, I was promoted to crew scheduling officer.

What are your recommendations to get into this position?


My recommendations for you are:

You should have flying attendant experience (minimum 3 years).


Planning, management and scheduling certificate.
Advance Microsoft office skills.

What is the salary range of new employee and highly


experienced crew?

A new employee earns between 500 600 BHD per month.


Highly experienced crew earns between 1000 1200 BHD per month.

What are the opportunities in career enhancements?


The opportunity enhancements in this career:

Crew planning manager


To reach this position you must have:

Management certificate.
Management experience (Minimum 5 years).
Scheduling experience and certificate.

The salary of crew planning manager is between 1800 2200 BHD.

What is the most interesting thing in the job?

The most interesting thing in the job is that you will be the only person who is
holding this position in the kingdom, because there is only one Airline
company in Bahrain.

Research:
The online research section will include the information collecting
about crew scheduling officer from deferent websites (sources). Generally,
crew planning officer is responsible for assigning all flights with flight crew,

Nature of work:

Reporting to the manager of the crew scheduling in daily basis.


Ensuring all flights is assigned with crew members.
Supporting a team by working on a shift basis.

Some Airline like (SriLankan Airlines), the maximum age limit for the

Qualification and experience:


According to Aviation job search website (2015).

Minimum education (high school).


Airlines experience.
Scheduling and planning experience on the industry standard systems
(AIMS/SITA).
Crew training and licensing knowledge.

According to (Wiki: How to do anything (n.d.)) website, crew planning


officer must covers all FAA (Federal aviation Administration) procedures
concerning crew flight requirements, flying hours and non-flying hours. Also,
officer should have knowledge about TSA (Transportation Security
Administration).

Salary of new and highly experienced crew planning officer:


According to the United Airlines (n.d.), the salary of the new crew
officer is 1,400 BHD per month, and the highly experienced officer earns
1,600 BHD per month. Plus, the crew planning officer in the united airlines

will have a health insurance, vacation, pain time off and bounces annually.
Besides, the salary range of the vacancy varies depending on the companys
size.

Skills required for the job:

Strong communication skills: crew planning officer must have very


strong communication skill to communicate with the flight attendants
to unsure all them have adequate schedule per month.
Establish record-keeping skills: crew scheduling officer must
demonstrate good keeping documentation, in order to keep the
information of the flight attendants schedules.

Analysis:
This part of the document will analyze the information collected from
both the interview and the independent research. The online research
presented more detailed information than the interviewee answers. The
differences between both sources occurred due to that the online research
showed information about the job outside the kingdom.
The information obtained from the independent research highlighted
the importance of the AIMS and SITA systems, whereas the interviewee
focused on obtaining experience as a flight attendant. Moreover, the online
research showed that the candidate should be experienced with keeping
documentation and scheduling data; however, the interviewee explained that
the applicant should be experienced with scheduling and problem solving
only.
In the other hand, there are two main similarities between both
sources the interview and the online research. The first similarity is that the

minimum educational level is high school certificate. The second similarity is


that applicants must have airlines experience planning skills.

Conclusion:
To conclude, my qualification and experience are not suitable to work
as a crew planning officer yet. In order to fill the gaps, I will need improve my
scheduling and planning skills, and obtain some experience; such as, three
years flight attendant as a minimum, AIMS & SITA certificates and courses in
FAA regulations.
