Hypothesis Tests:

Hypothesis testing is the use of statistics to determine the probability that a

given hypothesis is true.
.01 significance level to support the claim that 20% of all Skittles
Candies are green.
H : p = 0.20

p = 0.2

H: p 0.20

q = 0.8

= 0.01

n = 1335

/2 = 0.005

z = .6394

p = 0.207

p value = 1.4714

There is not sufficient evidence to reject the claim that 20% of all Skittles
candies are green.

.05 significance level to test the claim that the mean number of
Skittles in a bag is 56.
H : p = 56

= 0.05

H: p 56

/2 =.025

n = 22

= 56

x = 60.7

DF = 21

s = 1.17

t = 18.842

There is not sufficient evidence to reject claim that the mean number of
candies in a bag of Skittles is 56.

Reflection:
The conditions that we needed to meet in order to create interval estimates
for the Skittles Project were the population needed to be normally
distributed, and our sample needed to be a simple random sample. The
requirements were met for this portion. The conditions were met for the
means, which were the same as the proportions with a simple random
sample, and normal distribution. The conditions that we needed to meet in
order to create interval estimate for the standard deviation were that the
sample is sufficiently large. The possible errors that could have been made
throughout this project could be counting the skittles wrong, or incorrectly
collecting data. The sampling method could have been improved if each
student had two bags of skittles, that way there is more data. After all of the
calculations the conclusion that I have come to is that the true mean of the
number of candies in each bag of Skittles is close to the actual mean. I can
also conclude that the proportion of each color was relatively the same.

Conclusion:

For this math 1040 class we did a project to help everyone have a
chance to apply the things that we have learned this year. Each student
received a bag of skittles and we were directed to count the number of each
color of skittle in the bag, this was when we collected the data; after we
brought all of our numbers together to find the population statistics. With all
of our information that we collected we used it to calculate a five number
summary and create some graphs to represent and compare the data. We
did calculations to find the confidence intervals and do hypothesis tests.
After we reflected on our collected data and came to a conclusion about it.
I learned the importance of working as a group and how helpful it can
be. It would have taken much longer if one person had to count all of the
bags of skittles themselves, but you have to be able to trust that each
person does the correct work in order to have accurate results. It was very
beneficial to learn how to apply confidence intervals and how to use them in
real life, Im sure it wont be the last time I have to do this. Another thing
that I definitely feel was beneficial was collecting data and applying it. That
is something that I will most likely use in other classes I take or even in a
career. This was the first math project that I have done where I collected my
own data to test. This really helped develop my problem solving skills
because we started from scratch.
I now have a new outlook on math in real world applications. I am
considering going into engineering and I am going to have to learn to love

math and know what it is like working with numbers and collecting data,
having this general understanding of statistics will help me out.
