In this lesson students will learn how to understand units of measurement

for liquids and how they apply to each other. Students will learn how many
units of measurements are in other units of measurements.
5.3 The student will choose an appropriate unit of measurement for a given
situation involving measurement using U.S. Customary and metric units
The student will use problem solving, mathematical communication,
mathematical reasoning, connections, and representations
Solve problems involving measurement by selecting an appropriate
measuring device and a U.S. Customary or metric unit of measure
Students will be able to
Identify the parts of a gallon
Create a gallon man
Distinguish how many parts of a gallon are in other parts i.e. how
many pints are in a quart, etc.
length: part of an inch (, , ), inches, feet, yards, millimeters, centimeters,
meters, and kilometers;
weight: ounces, pounds, and tons; mass: grams and kilograms;
liquid volume: cups, pints, quarts, gallons, milliliters, and liters;
area: square units; and
temperature: Celsius and Fahrenheit units.
Water freezes at 0C and 32F.
Water boils at 100C and 212F.
Normal body temperature is about 37C and 98.6F.
Gallon, quart, pint, and cup measurable containers
Math notebook
Pencil
Promethean board
Teach the Gallon man story, there was a castle, that had four
queens, each queen had a prince and a princess, and each
prince and princess had two children. Students will copy this
into their math notebooks.
Students will be able to experiment with gallons, quarts, pints, and cups
with water in them, students will fill the gallons with 4 quarts, etc.
Have students understand by experiementing with units of measurements
going into others, for example how many cups in a three quarts, etc.
Use beans, rice, etc instead of water.
Make sure students understand how to use it without these hands-on activities
