I. Course Summary: Anatomy and Physiology focuses on the general principles of

physiology that govern the function of our bodies. In addition, the anatomical features of
the various systems of our bodies will also be investigated. Upon completion of this
course, you will be able to describe the function and anatomy of the eleven body systems
of the human body.
II. Major Objectives:
A. Name the 11 organ systems in the human body.
B. List and define life processes in the human body.
C. Use anatomical terms to describe body planes, body regions, and positions.
D. Describe the structure and function of the organ systems of the human body.
E. Identify the bones and structural features of the skull, vertebrae, ribs, and
sternum.
F. Locate, identify, and describe the actions of the major muscles.
G. Trace the pathway of blood flow through the heart, including chambers,
valves, and pulmonary circulation.
H. Identify the major systemic arteries and veins.
I. Describe the sequence of events that lead to an action potential when the cell
membrane is stimulated and how the impulse is conducted along the
length of a neuron.
J. Describe the origin of lymph and describe the mechanisms that move the fluid
through the lymphatic vessels.
K. Discuss factors that govern the diffusion of gases into and out of the blood.
L. Explain how kidney function has a role in maintaining blood concentration,
blood volume, and blood pressure.
M. Describe the role of hormones in reproductive functions.
N. Discuss disorders and diseases associated with each organ system.
III. Methods of Evaluation: If you are caught cheating or plagiarizing on any assignment, quiz,
exam, project, etc. you will receive zero points for the entire assignment, quiz, exam, project, etc.,
no exceptions. Furthermore, if you are sent to the office for a disciplinary matter you will take a
zero for any missed work.
A. Exams and quizzes
Quizzes may be announced or unannounced.
You will know in advance when all chapter tests are going to be.

B. Homework assignments
You are expected to have your work completed and with you at the beginning of class the day
that it is due. It is considered late if you hand it in any time after the beginning of class.
No late work will be accepted. I do not accept late work! Late work is anything that is not
handed to me when I am collecting the assignment. Furthermore, you may not use a
computer/technology excuse for your not having your project requirements ready when
they are due. If you are tardy to school for any reason and miss my class, any work you
owe for that days class must be given to me when you arrive at school that day, not the
next day, or your score will be a zero. Likewise, if you leave before class, your
assignments are due before you leave school.
C. Laboratory exercises and dissections
D. Research projects, such as webquests, preparing presentations, etc.
F. Cooperative learning activities

You will be expected to actively participate in all group activities.

G. Posters, displays, etc.
H. Participation (bell work, discussions, think-pair-share, etc.)
You will receive 100 points for each grading period.
You will lose 1 point each day for each of the following:
oNo book, binder, pencil, or other necessary materials
oDisrupting the class (1 point per disruption)
oAsking to leave the room during class for any reason other than an
emergency (Please keep the restroom breaks to a minimum.)
I. Final exam - Comprehensive (will include information from the whole course)
MAKE-UP WORK:
You are responsible for any missed work. For each day you are absent from school, not
necessarily from class (see above notes on being tardy to school) you have two days to make up work. This
time allowance counts your first day back to class. For example, if you are absent Monday and an
assignment is given for Tuesday, you have until the beginning of class Wednesday. Tuesday is one day and
Wednesday is two days. However, if an assignment was due Monday, you must hand it to me the
beginning of class on your first day back to school. It is your responsibility to hand me your make-up
work; I will not ask you for it! If you are truant, you will take a zero for ANYTHING you miss. Dont
forget to ask your classmates about missed work and to check your mailbox for handouts or worksheets. I
will also place all returned work in your mailbox. You should check this mailbox when you come into the
room everyday. You should keep all returned work and notes in your binder.

IV. Grading:
You will have an opportunity to earn points through a variety of assessments during each quarter. The
teacher will then determine the percentage grade by dividing the total points that you earned by the total
points that were possible to earn in the grading period. The following chart shows the numeric scale as
translated into a traditional letter grade system:
Letter Grade
A
B
C
D
F

Percentage Grade
93-100
85-92
75-84
65-74
0-64

Anatomy and Physiology is a weighted course. There are two major goals related to the weighted courses:
(1.) to encourage students to take more challenging courses and (2.) to reward students who achieve in the
identified challenging courses. To earn the weighted grade, you must earn 75% or higher at the end of the
quarter. If you earn the weighted grade, your percentage grade will be weighted by 1.05 on your report
card.

V. Class Participation:
You will be expected to:
*Arrive to class on time and ready to begin at the start of class with your book, binder, paper, pencil,
and any other necessary materials needed during class.
*Exhibit good manners and behavior.
*Actively participate verbally during discussions, ask questions, and contribute thoughtful comments
and ideas.
*Follow directions and participate in the dissections during labs.

activities.
*Follow all school and classroom rules and procedures.
