Alphabet Digital Book of the Civil War & Reconstruction


How have key events in American history helped to shape and create the country that we live in today? As
part of our study of the Civil War and Reconstruction, you will be creating a digital Alphabet Book which will
explain some of the events, terms, people and concepts that are a part of our unit. You will be working with a
group of 3 people on this project. Your book will use the letters of the alphabet to explain the Civil War and
Reconstruction in a historically accurate and attractive way. This book will help teach you and your classmates
something new that you did not know before about the history of our country during this time period. You will
be use names, events, words, and phrases from our lessons in class as well as those collected from the
resources that you will use for research. One of the purposes of this project is to expose you to the process of
researching and collecting information. You will be required to use library resources (a.k.a. books!!) as well as
online media sources. You will also include a bibliography of your sources. Your bibliography must include at
least two books as well as online sources and periodicals. You may use online resources for your illustrations
and your final product will presented in a Powerpoint format. Be creative and have fun learning new things!!

How did increased diversity in the United States impact the lifestyles, beliefs and struggles of the diverse
ethnic groups?
What role did technology and geography play in the development of the United Stated throughout the 1800s?
How did Americans work to reform the United States and create a distinct culture?
How have key events in American history helped to shape and create the country that we live in today?
The Task: For this assignment your task is to find one entry for each letter of the alphabet. Of the 26 entries you will be creating you
must have

10 significant people (listed in blue in the TOC)

3 geographical locations (listed in green in the TOC)

7 key events (listed in red in the TOC)

6 concepts (listed in purple in the TOC)

8 of your entries must include an original picture/visual (One that you create, not from an online source).
You will also be working with numbers and interesting facts:

Your digital book must include a Table of Contents (TOC).

One page of your ABC Books must be a Did you Know? page devoted to interesting facts about the Civil War and
Reconstruction. You must include at least ten facts (10).

You must also include one page of causes and effects of the Civil War. This section must include evidence to support your
thinking.

Last page of your ABC book must be your bibliography page.


OTHER THINGS NEEDED
You and your group need to keep your notes in your social studies journal. (I will do journal checks to monitor your progress.)
You will also need storyboard your final product. (This will be kept in your SS folder,)
Your project must include: a cover page, a dedication page, and a table of contents.

Summary page that will inspire interest in potential readers. This summary should be the first page of your book after the cover
page. Your summary must also include your answer to the question how can growth and change have an impact on the land
and the people of a nation?

For each of your entries you will be required to write a minimum of four (4) well-written sentences, which provide
information about the topic and why it is significant to the Civil War and Reconstruction.
