nomimasu ( )
This is a polite verb that means "to drink." Note that because it is the polite form of the verb, it
ends in -masu.
kaimasu ( )
This is a polite verb that means "to buy"/"to purchase."
nani
In Lesson 11, we learned the word nan (), which means "what," as in Kore wa nan desu
ka? ("What's this?") This word, nani, is another word that means "what" that we use in certain
sentence structures. In this lesson, we will be using nani.

In this lesson, we'll look at how to ask questions about actions using verbs and the
question marker ka .
Asking Que st ions Using Masu Ka

Making a sentence into a question in Japanese is so easy: all you have to do is add ka on to
the end of a -masu verb sentence.

Asking "What " Que st ions Using Nani o [Ve rb]- Masu Ka ?
In the dialogue you heard Taylor asking Masato nani o nomimasu ka? ()
As you may know already, nani () means "what." Using nani o [verb]-masu ka , you can
ask a question beginning with "what."

place of wa in our sentence structure. This mo has the meaning of "also" or "too" and
refers to the noun that comes before it.
