Math: Addition and Subtraction (Numbers to 100/Numbers to 18)!

Grade 1/2!
Time: 60 minutes!

Description!
The students will start with a group warm-up. We will sit in a circle and practice counting around
by 2s, 5s, and 10s starting at different numbers (ie: count by 10s from 17). Next, we will continue to practice in a group. The grade 2s will practice two problems on the SMARTboard that will
focus on getting to the next nice number when doing adding and subtracting. The grade 1s will
focus on showing their thinking using one of the two strategies they are familiar with (ten frames
and rekenreks). The teacher will explain a strategies slide that will remain up on the SMARTboard while students work on their Show What You Know math sheets. The students will work
independently during this time as the teacher circulates to aid students. After one math problem
is completed, students will return to full-group to review the strategies they used to complete the
problem. !

New Brunswick Curriculum Outcomes!

N9 and N10!

Materials!
- SMARTboard lesson!
- Math manipulatives (laminated number lines, rekenrek, ten frames)!
- Work sheets (different sheets for grade 1 and grade 2)!

Before/Warm-up (10 minutes)!

- Students will be asked to sit in a circle for count around the circle. This is a routine that is
well established within the class. !
- The teacher will ask only the girls to count around the circle. They will be counting by 10s to
97 starting at 37.!
- The teacher will ask only the boys to count around the circle. They will be counting back by
10s from 95 to 55. !

During (40 minutes)!

- Students will be asked to go to their places on the mat. They will engage in a whole group
practice activity that will have a main focus for grade 1 and a main focus for grade 2. !
- Beginning with grade 2, the main focus will be finding the next nice number on the number
line when adding and subtracting. !
- Students will be shown a number line, part part whole mat, and number sentence. From here,
students will be prompted to ask what the first jump on the number line should be to find the
next nice number (starting at 15 with a jump of 5 to get to 20). !
- A second problem will be completed for grade 2s. After they have completed this, they will go
work independently on their work sheets while the grade 1s review their strategies. !
- The main focus for grade 1 students is reviewing the two strategies that they can use for subtracting and adding (ten frame and rekenrek). !
- Students will guide the teacher in answering the word problem on the SMARTboard (Miss Edney has 16 gold stars). The teacher will follow the directions of one strategy, when completed,
students will be prompted to think of another strategy to show thinking. !

- Grade 1 students will work independently to complete questions on their Show What You
Know sheets. !

After (10 minutes)!

- After completing one or two questions, students will re-group in front of the SMARTboard and
review the strategies used. !
- Teachers will reinforce how making addition and subtraction jumps to nice numbers (full tens)
will make using the number line and finding the answers easier. !
- Teacher can also demonstrate how using smaller jumps is less efficient but can also bring you
to the right answer if you are stuck. (ie: jumps of 5, 2, and 3 equals ONE jump of 10). !
- During the lesson and after the lesson, the teachers will be looking for good examples of
strategies in student work to add to the Math Wall as exemplars. !

Differentiation!
- To differentiate, students will have access to math manipulatives (ten frames, number lines,
rekenreks, hundreds charts) to have kinaesthetic and visual representations of numbers. !

Assessment!
- Students will be assessed formatively by participation in warm-up activities. !
- Students will be assessed formatively by the completion of the Show What You Know work
sheets. These work sheets will help provide the teacher with an insight into where students
are with their learning in this unit.
