New unit begins this week:

GEOMETRY!!
Here are some hints, tips, and strategies
to have in order to help your student
throughout this unit!

Basic Notes on Geometry
Geometry involves learning about shapes
and their properties
Geometry can be divided into Plane
Geometry with flat shapes and then into
Solid
Geometry
involving
threedimensional objects
SOL Focus
3.14 The student will identify, describe,
compare, and contrast characteristics of
plane and solid geometric figures (circle,
square, rectangle, triangle, cube,
rectangular prism, square pyramid, sphere,
cone, and cylinder) by identifying relevant
characteristics, including the number of
angles, vertices, and edges, and the
number and shape of faces, using
concrete models
3.15 The student will identify and draw
representations of points, line segments,
rays, angles, and lines.
3.16 The student will identify and describe
congruent and non-congruent plane
figures.
Art Standards
3.4 The student will use imaginative and
expressive strategies to create works of
art.
3.6 The student will create works of art that
communicate ideas, themes and feelings.
3.8 The student will use organic and
geometric shapes in observational
drawing.

Why is Geometry Important?

Shapes are all around us
We need geometry to find patterns, area,
volume, length and angles that help us
see the world around us
Identifying and describing shapes will
help students develop skills they will
need throughout school to solve higher
level analysis problems

Helpful Hints for Helping your Student:
Engage students in identifying and
describing shapes you see in your own
home or when you are out and about at
the grocery store, park, mall etc.
Encourage students to draw shapes and
analyze the components that make
them up
Ask them questions that make them
think about the importance of shapes

Strategies being used:

Students will be analyzing various works of

art coupled with geometry in order to
understand the use and properties of
shapes
For example, the piece above by Paul Klee
will be an activity of shape analysis and
interpretation for the students to recreate

Description of Solid Figures-Cube

Face

Vertex

Edge

Example review
questions:
How many edges
does the shape have?
How many vertices?
How many faces?

Edges- the outside limit of an object, area, or surface

Vertices-each angular point of a plane or solid figure
Faces-a flat surface that forms part of the boundary of a solid object

Students will be engaging with visualization, models, drawings, paintings,

group activities, individual assignments, group projects, class discussions,
and many other activities throughout the unit.
Congruence-two figures or
objects are congruent if they are
the same size and shape.
Congruent
Shapes

Imaginative/Expressive Art
Imaginative Art-having or showing creativity or
inventiveness
Expressive Art-conveying through or feeling

Geometry Practice Games

I think it is important for learning to be fun so I will be sending games home throughout the
unit for students to play at home, but here are some other resources too!!

By the end of the unit students should be able to:

Understand plane and solid geometric figures have certain attributes and are related yet are
represented differently
Understand that attributes of plane and solid figures are vital components to structure and
relate to congruence
Understand how shapes and solid geometric figures, as well as their attributes can be the
foundation of art or enhance various works of art
Understand that emotion, themes, and ideas can be included in art
