The Pursuit of Internationalism

There are many different opinions about how important

internationalism is. Earl Warren, the 14th Chief of Justice of the United States,
believed that internationalism was imperative to the success of countries. He
deemed that the failure to recognize the importance of internationalism was
the most tragic illogicality of nation-states, and that if everyone focused on
internationalism, there would be way less problems. There are many
individuals who agree with Warren; they believe that pursuing
internationalism to a large extent is what is best for the world; Red Cross and
Green Peace are examples of this. Engaging in world activities and helping
out other countries is the best thing in the long run, as helping others is
more important than helping their own country. On the other hand, others
would argue that pursing internationalism is bad for countries, as it doesnt
focus heavily enough on nationalism. They believe that with the pursuing of
internationalism, it will cause their own country to fall. Leaders who believed
that this was the correct view were Stalin and Hitler. However, countries
should pursue internationalism to a large extent, but not to the extent that
they are fighting for other countries and causing more conflict, or putting
themselves in danger.
During World War Two, Hitler had ideas that were far from
internationalistic. He wanted his country to be the most powerful country,
and he began to kill many people who didnt represent what he thought his
country should have. At the time, Canada was no longer under British rule,

but they still decided to pursue internationalism by helping the Allies fight
against Germany and Hitlers nationalistic power quest. There ended up
being around 45,000 Canadian military casualties in the war; sending
military soldiers to war was a damaging idea. Canada should have stayed out
of the war, and instead settled for sending humanitarian and financial aid to
the countries who needed it. This would have helped many individuals
suffering in the war, but Canada would not have been directly involved; they
would have been safe, but still would have been pursuing internationalism by
assisting the side that they believed needed assistance. While it is important
to help out countries in need, it is also important to think of the safety of
ones own country first. Joining a war only increases the conflict, and harms
more people.
Currently, there is a crisis in Ukraine. Russian rebels began to seize
territory in eastern Ukraine, and when the rebels began to lose, Russias
president Vladimir Putin began to send in Russian military. There has been
genocide and terror going on in the country, and at this time, Canada has
done nothing to intervene in the conflict. While they shouldnt be promoting
more violence by sending in military troops to fight, nor sacrificing the
countrys safety, they should be sending humanitarian and financial aid to
Ukrainians and any others suffering because of the conflict. Russia is
violating many human rights; Canada should be pursuing internationalism by
helping out Ukrainians with humanitarian aid. This would ensure that
Canadians stay safe, but the country is still helping out those in need.

Getting directly involved in the military side of things could only increase the
conflict and make things worse, putting even more people in danger.
Countries need to get involved in internationalism by helping Ukraine, but
they shouldnt fight for Ukraine and cause more conflict, nor should they put
their own country in danger to help.
It is important to help other countries and pursue internationalism.
However, it should never be pursued so far that one is disregarding their own
countrys safety, or fighting for other countries and causing more conflict. It
is important to be between nationalism and internationalism, closer to the
international side. It is in every countrys best interest to become involved
with one another, and help each other out as best as they can. Cooperation
and collaboration are two very vital things that every country needs to work
on. As Helen Keller once said, Alone we can do so little. Together we can do
so much.
