Consider the following situation where the effective stress at the centre of

the clay layer is 50kN/m2 with a void ratio of 1.11.

After load application, the stress at the centre of the clay layer increased

by 50kN/m2 and at the end of primary consolidation, the void ratio had

decreased to 1.01. If cv = 0.305m2/year and assuming 1-D conditions

prevail:

i)

ii)

plot the settlement vs time curve for the layer (for this, evaluate the

time at which 10%, 20%, 30% settlement .etc has been achieved)

iii)
