Scene #29. Park Min-young
Park Min-young is bright and sweet. No, she is a perfectionist who is

EDITOR S LETTER

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU

In creating a new life, an extreme amount of love and constant care from the parents are essential. As time goes by, a newborn baby grows up and one day, the baby spits out the very first
word Mom. This is the most exciting moment to be a parent. The creation of heaven and
earth can be seen in a similar light just bigger in scale, I think. Thats why birthdays are so special to everyone and on that particular day, people deserve to receive love, care and blessing
from all others. K-WAVE may be just a magazine of 180 pages not a life, and not even organic. But when I see its texts, pictures, and design derived from all the efforts of many, many people, it looks like a toddler to me. What kind of life will this two-year-old magazine K-WAVE have?
And what kind of world is waiting for this toddler?
For 730 days, there has been a baby that gave me 23 moments filled with joy, pleasure, drive,
disappointment and worry. Now the toddler is about to walk. There are hard and difficult days
ahead but I only wish that this kid will grow up well along with nice friends. The toddler now
has wonderful friends in Brazil, Guam, Saipan, the Philippines and China. And about a year from
now, my kid will probably have many more friends all over the world what a parenthood I have.
If these have been baby steps over the last two years, there will be huge leaps for the next 20
years.
Happy birthday to you, K-WAVE!

Hyomin is the second-runner from T-ara to make a debut as

a solo artist. She completely changed her style ranging from

, ,

her short blonde bob hairstyle to outfit, songs, and chore-

ography, accomplishing a look that is different from Ji-yeon,

the other member of the group who made a solo debut be-

forehand.

Hyomin: As a rapper with T-ara, I tend to show a tougher side

of myself so I was not able to show my bright and cheerful

side. Through performances as a solo artist, I want to show

the energetic and jolly sides of me.

As a well-known fashionista, she expressed her opinions on

. <Nice Body>

every aspect of her first solo album from the concept, cho-

reography, to music video which has resulted in a perfect-

ed stage performance. Brave Brothers, the composer, wrote

a slow-tempo hip-hop song with a groovy organ for the lead

single Nice Body. The lyrics depict a girls desire to look

<Nice Body> .

good for the guys. LOCO, a talented rapper, featured in the

song for the ultimate collaboration.

Hyomin: Since the title of my song was Nice Body, I was

pressured to have such body. After thinking about which diet

to be on, I chose to do a cross-fit workout accompanied with

lemon detox. It was stressful to be on a diet while working

out so hard, but I did feel my body getting healthier. Because

the lyrics of the song call for the desire to be on diet, it helped

fx <>

me to be persistent with my workout.

Hyomin took her first steps as a singer-songwriter by com-

posing a song for the album. Dam utilizes retro sounds with

intro effects and guitar lines. The title has a double meaning

of story, and strong spirit with a progressive soul. Every line

in the lyrics project a message that she wanted to put out.

<>

Hyomin: The song delivers a message of courage to over-

come difficult times. I hope the song will heal and give

strength to bear the pain that my fans and many others have.

Singer-songwriter Chakun from the veteran Electroboys of

the team Brave helped Hyomin with Fake It, a medium-tem-

. .

po hip-hop song. The song is about a womans painful at-

tempt to hide her heartbreak and pretend to be okay in front

. <Nice body>

of a lover who left her. You will have chance to fully enjoy Hy-

omins singing ability through Fake It.

Hyomin: My goal with the album is to give people the chance
to think there is something new about me, a girl named Hyomin, that I can portray different kinds of appeal. Rather
than being nervous, I did my best to be ready with the performance that I can enjoy on stage. Please root for me and my
song, Nice Body, and look forward to the upcoming T-ara
album.

Wishing for characters like Natalie Portmans role in

Black Swan
It was from Sungkyunkwn Scandal that I started to realize Park Min-youngs presence as an actress. Her lively and
bright smile, dollish charm despite her epicene role, and innocent image without a hint of darkness made a deep impression on my mind. But sometimes, I want to see different sides of her such as sharp facial expression and eyes of a
cold and vicious femme fatale.
Park Min-young: I always wanted to play different kinds of
roles since my debut. So far, I have played similar and rather
typical characters. But not all whites look exactly the same:
white next to blue feels different from that next to black. A
character also glows in different shades depending on the
context of actions, sitcoms, fusion historical dramas, and
many more. Though my roles seem similar, I believe each has
different glow and perfomance within them.

< >

What a smart answer. She could not have come up with such

. <

expressions and words unless she had been pondering se-

>. .

riously about her acting. Then, what kind of character does

she want to play from now on on the premise that they will be

very different and fierce?

. ,

Park Min-young: I want to play a character that breaks up

. . .

into pieces with her intense inner conflicts like Natalie Port-

man in Black Swan. I also like the characters of Jennifer Law-

, .

rence in American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook. But

more than anything, it is important that there is something

. , ,

I can learn from a work. It is a matter of course that I study

and analyze the piece completely. Collaborating with many

. .

people to complete a single piece is a process of joy for me.

Indeed. Walking down a long path only to reach a goal might

be the hardest task on earth. But while carefully focusing on

. , .

every step to totally embrace the sensation that comes from

the tip of your toe, the destination will appear in front of your

eyes in no time. The actress Park Min-young already knows

< >

this fact very well.

through the sitcom, Unstoppable High Kick! for the first time
in 2006. Since then, whats taken for granted by many peo-

ple in their 20s was not granted to her. She is lucky that she

2006, < >

did not have to suffer long period of time as an unknown ac-

20

tress. I, however, somehow felt that she, as a 29 year-old

lady, might feel different about it.

. ,

Park Min-young: I did not have chance to enjoy ordinary life

in school like others. I sometimes feel sad about it, but I have

. .

no regrets because I know that acting is what I want to pur-

sue the most. After much meandering, I realized that in or-

. .

der to gain something, I have to let go of other things. In the

. .

beginning, I used to cry and be hurt by that fact. But through

. .

such process, I learned how to heal myself and control my

mind.

, . ()

Park is an actress who represents more than what has been

seen on screen. With as many tears as she has shed, she

must have become stronger. Then, I could see a panoramic

view of her past, as I think about how lonely she could have

been. I could feel her tears even though I did not see or hear

. .

her cry directly.

20 ?

How can you describe your twenties in one word? And, if

you can go back to any period of time, to which point do you

want to go back? I asked her while slowly rewinding her life

like a film projector. Park Min-young: Well, my twenties were

about running. I did nothing else but ran forward. Now, I

, 20 . .

want to slow down and start walking at a rapid pace while

appreciating the view. Also, I do not want to go back to any-

. .

time in the past because I do not want to go through hardship

. .

again. I think right now as a 29-year-old Park Min-young is

. ()

the happiest moment of my life.

Perfectionist or Romanticist

. .

Park Min-young: I am a perfectionist especially when it

comes to my profession. But I pay great attention so that

my actress side does not suffocate the 29-year-old side

of me. Therefore, I usually read a lot and write a lot. I know

that I will never be happy with whatever I do, once I lose the

sense of who I am.

. .

During the interview, I could see Park Min-young as a per-

. . 3~5

son who is both strict and romantic with herself, a person

, .

with caring hearts for others, and a person who knows how

. , .

to enjoy her time alone. Also, I could feel that she would be-

The Seoul Cathedral Anglican Church of Korea is a place
where you feel like you are standing in the middle of a quiet city of France. It is also a great place to whisper sweet
nothings sitting on a bench near the cathedral. The building
is constructed with red bricks like those in Europe, but there
are many Korean twists if you take a closer look. For example, muntin of traditional Korean doors and roofs with Korean-style slates are harmonized with the European architecture.
Once you take a slow walk around the cathedral, step into
the building. There is an organ consisting of 145 pipes in the
middle of the cathedral which will probably make you feel solemn once it plays. The cathedral is structured in the shape

of a cross. The part where Jesus head lies faces east where
the sun rises. The cathedral, built in 1926, was listed as one
of the most beautiful structures in Korea by 100 architects

Daegu Sesame Oil Shop, a Secret of Flavorful Scent of

50 years
I press sesame seeds to extract sesame oil around lunchtime every day which explains the aromatic smell around
the place. Daegu Sesame Oil Shop, with its 50-year history,
has become a popular spot for tourists from overseas. Even
though one can buy a bottle of sesame oil at supermarkets or
convenience stores nearby, the taste cannot be compared to
the oil extracted on your own.
The place with the aging sign hanging in the front might disappear and be pushed away by sophisticated-looking buildings. But I wish I were able to smell the flavorful sesame oil
as long as I could. As I left the Daegu Sesame Oil Shop, a
dove flew down and hovered around the place for a long time.

Seoul Choong Ang High School, Lingering Emotions

from Winter Sonata
I thought the school was a small edition of Yonsei University or Korea University. Pretty buildings are gathered together in a small campus. I thought, If I study at a place like this,
I might do better in school or at least I would want to go to
school every day.
The school was established in 1908 and was a place where
the March 1st independent movement and June 10th independent demonstration were plotted during the period of
Japanese colonialism. In addition, Winter Sonata was shot
here, so you can pretend to be Choi Ji-woo or Bae Yong-joon
and walk around the campus. Probably thanks to Winter Sonata, many foreigners visit Seoul Choong Ang High School.
The bookstores in front of the school sell posters and photos of Hallyu stars including Choi Ji-woo and Bae Yong-joon.
One last secret of the school is that this pretty campus belongs to an all-male high school, not a coed one. Wow.

Octagon is Famous for its Hollywood Star and Foreign Celebrity Guests. Gangnam clubs are all the same but why do
these shiny people flock to Octagon? To be honest all the
clubs in Gangnam have a similar atmosphere and music. (The
same DJs hop around 2~3 clubs to play music and since music is played according to the trend, the music is the same
unless you are an electronic music maniac.) To point out Octagons difference with other clubs, it would be its special selectiveness, and pricing policy. In other words, it is targeted
marketing for the high class. The rooms and alcohol are expensive but its representative luxury symbol Octagon Villa
(reservations starting from 5 million won, explained in detail
on the back page.) is its specialty. Regular people can never

Their Own League Octagon Villa

Octagons Penthouse and a Secret Place Only Allowed to the
Rich, Octagon Villa. Even those who frequent Octagon do
not know about Octagon Villa and a few have used it. Why?
The price is insane. The price that starts from 5 million won
(champagne + hard liquor or 15 champagne bottles + side
menu set) equals the monthly salary of a successful office
worker but what is worse is that that price is the minimum.
Drinking in such a place is more of a bucket list. But if you
really want to enjoy yourself, it wouldnt be bad to use it. Although the consequences are yours, you will feel like an Arab
prince while using it. After swiping your card, go to the door
located on the right corner of the 1st floor main stage. There
you will enter the Octagon Villa. Since no one else but the
customers with reservations and their guests can enter, regular people cannot easily look inside. Well have to be satisfied knowing that there is a secret place. (Cancel your payment and play Arab prince next time)
Aqua Bar to See Mermaids
The most noticeable of the bars in Octagon. The swimming
pool located right next to the first floor main stage? It might
appear to be just water and bubbles but when the pool parties start, you can hang out with gorgeous girls in bikinis. If
you want to enjoy the pool party in Aqua Bar, you have to
check the notifications first. Of course there are muscular
mermen!
Ocggochi that Can Only be Tasted at Octagon
Ggochi, or skewers, at a club? This isnt a street food vendor!
But once you taste it, you will first be surprised by the taste
and then surprised again for the quantity. What is this.. Because it is a pricy club, this food is even more amazing. According to an employee, there is not enough Ocggochi to go
around. Searching it on the web would tell you that there are
many bloggers who want to eat Ocggochi like they are at a
restaurant. If it is that popular, should I propose a franchise
business? I am sure I can become an Ocggochi prince.

1st Generation 5-member Idol Group GOD

They debuted in 1999 with five members: Park Jun-hyung,
Danny Ahn, Sohn Ho-young, Kim Tae-woo, and Yoon gyesang and became the best idol group at the time. Although
they had a smaller fandom than H.O.T at the time, their appeal to various age groups has granted them the title of national group and allowed them to sweep the awards. In particular, the baby entertainment program GODs Baby Book
showed a friendly and human side of them.
Saturday Night
This concert took advantage of the open outdoor space to install an 80M main stage, 160M protruding stage, and over 70
LED panels to allow all fans a clear view of the members. Especially after the dramatic opening show with the theme of
15 years, a water show was conducted here and there. GOD
sang new songs from their 8th album such as Ugly Duckling, Road, 0%, and Friday Night and other hit songs
that the fans remember. A few fans sang along and cried.
Blue Promise
All the singers have different color balloons that the fans
cheer with but GOD only has blue balloons. Before the concert, they released Blue Promise on July 1st in order to
keep their promise to the fans and it took the 1st place in
all the music sites within an hour of release. With GODs medium tempo and lyrics that spun off of One Candle from
the third album, Blue Balloon was enough to touch the fans
emotions. With the start of 2 concerts in Seoul, GOD will visit fans nation-wide by touring Gwanggju, Busan, Daegu, and
Daejeon for a month.

His Charisma When not Being Funny

A comedian makes others laugh for a living. So, what would
he be like when he does not have to entertain others? This
question came up to me when I was watching a commercial
of Jo Yun-ho advertising suits. I had a feeling that I could find
intriguing sides of him when he does not have to be funny.
Therefore, I decided to suit him up once again.
His Candid Stories
Meeting my expectations, Jos tall frame and well-proportioned body created a perfect fit for suits. The gravity of the
photo shoot, however, was beyond expectation: The studio was filled with laughter, but once the camera was on,
it turned into a serious photo shoot. I thought such an atmosphere would be a great chance to ask Jo about todays
shooting, his thoughts as a head of a family, and many more
questions that I had as his fan.
Interviewer: How do you feel about shooting photographs
in a serious mood, in contrast with your day job as a comedian?
Jo Yun-ho: In fact, photographers asked me to pose funny

The Pulitzer Prize is regarded as the Nobel Prize of the press.

When you carefully examine the periodical news photos at
the exhibit, you cant help but ask yourself, Are people inherently good or bad? In a photo, there is the photographer
who sought to change the world with one photo at the risk of
his life and the very moment when life was taken away. There
was a case that represents the fate of a journalist causing all
journalists to hesitate in the field. Kevin Carter took the photograph of an eagle waiting for a Sudanese girl who looked
like she was on the verge of collapse from hunger. He received the Pulitzer Prize for this photo. However, he ran into
moral criticism saying that he did not take care of the child
first and he ultimately took his own life that very same year at
age 33. Photographers often grapple with their identity even
after doing their job. The news photos that they take demonstrate the irony of the world. That is why photos can be more
brutal, sad, and beautiful than anything.
