Sociology-1010-402 Dr. Axana King Assignment #1 Social location is a way for sociologists to find out why people do what they do by looking at where people are located in society and how factors, such as; jobs, income, gender, age, education, and race-ethnicity affect their ideas and behaviors. The concept of social location is way to help better understand more in-depth how groups influence people and how groups are influenced by their society. I was born and raised in the United States and everything I know is American. My ancestors are originally from the Asia and Europe, so I am sure and well aware that their ways of growing up are very different from mines. I grew up in a multi-culture society where many ethnicities along with their traditions and culture mesh together, but most importantly, racism was never an issue where I grew up. Social location I believe is essential because it is the woman that I am today. Growing up there I did and how I grew up, I have different values and beliefs from my family members that still reside in Asia and Europe. Because eduction is crucial and extremely important in my family, I believe having an
education is a powerful tool and it is an achievement that no one can every
take away from you because you worked hard for it. As a female I believe it it still important to know how to take care of a household and have children, but at the same time still be able to do what men can do because you cannot always depend on a man. I recall visiting my family in Asia years ago and when I recollect memories of when I was there and comparing how they are compared to how I am, it is significantly different because I am from America and they're from Asia. Our cultures, traditions, values and beliefs are very different. For example, I have an older female cousin in Asia who is in her late twenties, no college education, no jobs, has two children, still lives with her parents while she is receiving money every money from my successful family member here in America. In her eyes, she may think that living with her parents is no problem, having no college education doesnt mean anything, and working for your own money to take care of yourself is a total waste of time because she already has people in America taking care of her and her needs. Well, in my eyes, it is the total opposite because I have higher expectations and I was brought up differently from her. Living in Asia may be harsh, but living in America can be just as harsh because we all need to work in order to provide for ourselves and to survive.
