A Federal, Provincial and Territorial Framework for Action to Promote Healthy Weights
The main causes of death and ill health in Canada are chronic
diseases and injuries; however, a large proportion of these can
be prevented or delayed.
Thats why, through collaborative efforts such as the
Pan-Canadian Healthy Living Strategy and the Declaration
on Prevention and Promotion, Canadas Federal, Provincial
and Territorial (FPT) Ministers of Health and of Health
Promotion/Healthy Living have made the promotion of
health and the prevention of disease, disability and injury
a priority.
In September 2010, Federal, Provincial and Territorial
Ministers of Health agreed to focus efforts on curbing
childhood obesity and promoting healthy weights as a critical
first step in helping Canadians live longer, healthier lives.
The concern:
Childhood obesity can contribute to a number of health issues
in childhood and can also lead to long-term health problems
later in life. Health problems that were previously seen only
in adults, are now also affecting children, including problems
such as high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes.
Next steps:
Under this Framework, Federal, Provincial and Territorial
Ministers will work together and with stakeholders to identify
joint and/or complementary actions. As a first step, Ministers
of Health will engage Canadas youth and all sectors of
societypublic, private, non-governmental organizations and
community leaders, policy and decision-makersto gather
their perspectives and identify priority actions.
