English Language Development 2015-2016

I am looking forward to an exciting year with you! The purpose of this course is for you to
become better readers, writers, listeners and speakers. Students can expect to engage in a
highly rigorous curriculum,collaborate in academic discussions, and become proficient in
the use of technology. This course is designed to help students connect to their community
and the world. The following are a list of classroom expectations and procedures that will
help to ensure a positive learning environment.

Classroom Expectations:
All School rules apply inside and outside of the classroom!
1. Be Punctual.
Tardiness is unacceptable in this class. You MUST be sitting in your
assigned seat prepared to work when the bell rings.
2. Be Respectful.
You must respect your teacher, your peers and yourself in order to
be successful. The following behaviors will not be tolerated: bullying, using
profanity,disruptiveness, and disrespect of others property
3. Be Prepared.
Bring class materials
every day.
You must earn your grade, and you
can do so by coming to class prepared and ready to participate.
Part of being
prepared includes knowing your username and password for Google at all
times!
a. You may have snacks in class (i.e. granola bars, chips, or crackers, so long as
they are not disruptive.
However
, you may not bring a full on meal such as
Burger King)
b. You will be allowed this privilege as long as you clean up your trash (we
DO
NOT
want ants!)
c. You may drink beverages in class such as water or gatorade, as long as it has
a lid
d. Do not
leave your seat unless you have been given permission.
e. Do not use foul, inappropriate, or derogatory language.
f. Make sure all materials are ready before instruction begins, this means if you
are writing with a pencil, please sharpen it prior to class starting.

g. Nothing
is to be thrown in the classroom!
h. Cell phones, ipods, and other electronic devices must stay in your pocket,
purse, or backpack throughout the duration of the class period.

These devices may be taken away if used or seen during class
instruction
i. Please
remain in your seat
until the bell rings and do not linger nor line up
at the door.

Classroom Procedures:
1. Restroom:
Raise your hand and ask to use the restroom. Do not abuse this privilege
by asking to use the restroom multiple times per class period or during class
everyday. The restroom should be for emergencies only.
2. Homework:
Assignments must be submitted complete and on time. Homework will
be collected at the beginning of the period on the day it is due. Be advised that work
you do not finish in class will become homework and will be due the next day.
3. Absences:
Excessive absences will hinder your success in this class. However, if you
are absent, it is your responsibility to check with me for missed work and retrieve
the work to be completed. For an
excused
absence, you will have 3 days to turn in
the work, and for an
unexcused
absence you will have 1 day.
Late work
that is not
due to an absence will only receive half credit.
4. Binder:
You must
bring
your English binder to class
everyday
, along with all other
materials. You also must keep all Handouts, notes for class, and work in your binder
because your binder
will
count as part of your
participation grad
e at the end of
each grading period.
5. Chromebook Expectations:
Rules, procedures, and expectations will be covered
during the second week of school. Failure to comply will result in the following:
First Occurrence---
Warning
Second Occurrence
---Phone call home
Third Occurrence
---Sent to IC and loss of Chromebook privileges

Any assigned texts

Grading:
The grading breakdown will consist of the following:
Classwork and Homework: 25%
Writing and Presentations: 30%
Tests and Quizzes: 25%

Bellringers and Exit Slips: 10%


Participation: 10%
Letter grades will be calculated according to the following percentages:
A: 90%-100%
B: 80%-89%
C: 70%-79%
D: 55%-69%
F: 55% and below
