Introduction
Utilizing software to assess students progress is important, because it allows teachers to
see where the student needs support in the students academics. Using software gives the teacher
the tools needed with making an assessment for that particular student. Keeping data allows
teachers to collaborate, set goals, brainstorm, and visualize how the student is learning. The
teacher can also plan lesson around the student assessment to see how the students learning.

(Ellis & Kelder, 2012). The software that is discussed in the paper is Think Binder, Smart
Response VE, and I Thought. The software all has something in common to enhance students
learning giving the opportunity to be successful in academics.
Technology to Facilitate Ongoing Efforts to Assess Student Learning
Using technology has been easier in the classroom for teachers to facilitate students
learning. Teachers tracking data of students progress will allow teachers to use the right
assessment and method of technology to enhance students learning. Learning technologies
provide mechanism for educators to provide support facilitate and monitor student learning
(Ellis & Kelder, 2012). Teachers have an advantage in choosing what type of software the
students need according to students assessments. Wiki technology can be used to support
students collaboration to complete a group assessment task and make visible to the unit
coordinator the content and interaction involved in a groups learning journey (Ellis & Kelder,
2012). Another form of software that can be used to assess students progress ePortfolios
provide a mechanism for individual students to demonstrate their contribution to group work
while scaffolding critical reflection on both and individual learning (Ellis & Kelder, 2012). In
using different technology and software to enhance students progress will allow the students to
succeed in their academics.
Thinker Binder- Teachers can use this software tool to enhance students learning by
asking questions and discuss certain topics. Students can work on a project and then share
valuable information based on what the students learned. Teachers can use this tool to collaborate
with students based on knowledge and understand of curriculum. Using Thinker Binder in the
classroom teachers can have students find information on a particular subject and then discuss in
small group follow up with questions to share with whole group. Teachers can observe students

on what the lesson was about or based on whole group or individual assessment. Teachers can
grade students based on what assessment is in place for that particular student.
Smart Response VE Teachers can use this software to engage students in questions
that are planned. Teachers can also have students take quizzes based on a certain topic provided.
This will allow teachers to evaluate students progress on their comprehension and understanding
of the information taught. Smart Response VE can be used on the internet as well as other
devices provided. Smart Response VE can be used on the Smart board for students as a whole or
individual group based on activity provided by teacher of assessment or task at hand. The
teacher can download this software onto Smart Board for students to interactive and engage in
question that are planned follow up with a quiz for assessment.
I Thought Teachers can use this software to evaluate student progress by planning
ideas and setting goals based on students academics. Teachers can also brainstorm what type of
project students can work on to enhance learning. This tool is visual software that gives teachers
a visual concept of how students are learning through discussion and ideas that students have
from a lesson. Teachers can use this tool in the classroom by allowing students to work on a
particular subject or project and then follow up with questions based on the curriculum. The
assessment can be part of the questions or discussion to see if student comprehends the lesson.

Formative and Summative Assessment

Formative Assessments and Summative Assessments are forms of testing that instructors
can use to measure their students progress. Formative assessments are ongoing, and has no
measures, teachers can use these types of assessments daily, weekly, or monthly. Summative
assessments are used at specific times and are usually given at the end of an instructional unit.
The differences between Formative and Summative assessments include; formative assessments
are used throughout instruction and guides teacher instruction and summative assessments are
given at the close of instruction to see what the students have learned. Teachers can provide their
students with formative and summative assessments using technology such as socrative, which
lets you input your questions and answers, blackboard where teachers have the ability to input
quizzes and test in an online format, and electronic portfolios, which can be used to collect
students work over a period of time. According to the Prezi website Research shows that
technology-enhanced formative assessment is a powerful solution that enables educators to more
readily monitor progress and improve student achievement (Davidson, 2012)
Pros and Cons using Technology to Facilitate Assessment
Using technology to facilitate assessments can benefit teachers and students, and can also
have negative effects on the classroom. In an article describing the pros and cons of using
technology for assessments, the author describes some of the positive effects which can include,
Teachers can provide a wide range of topics to test in a variety of ways; students have the ability
to access the criteria for the assessments easily; using technology saves preparation and delivery

time for teachers; finally the use of technology for assessments is flexible and allows students to
retrieve the test anytime and place promoting student engagement. There are also cons for using
technology for assessments these could include; the cost of using different software to provide
the assessments can have additional cost for the teacher or school; accessibility for students with
disabilities could be affected if the teacher does not provide the proper adaptations to the
program; technical issue could be an issue; and students could feel a sense of isolation when
using the programs. (N.A., ND, Engage in Assessments)
Should teachers only use technology to assess student learning? Why or Why not
Teachers should use technology to assess students learning, because it is convenient and
effective way of following students progression, and compiling data for a classroom.
Assessment technology in connection with the ISTE Standards
The ISTE standards state the following regarding using technology for assessments:
Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation
strategies. Teachers:
A. apply technology in assessing student learning of subject matter using a variety of
assessment techniques.
B. use technology resources to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and
communicate ndings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning.
C. applies multiple methods of evaluation to determine students appropriate use of
technology resources for learning, communication, and productivity.

Conclusion
Assessing data in the classroom allows teachers to make a decision on the proper
technology and software to use when assessing a student. Technology and software is important,
because gives students support in the academics provided by teachers. Teachers have the
advantage to use these tools to enhance students ability to learn. The technology or software
provided allows students to have hand on access. Students need this interaction to engage the
lesson taught. There are many ways and variety that support teacher and student to enhance the
student learning and ability in being successful.
