Student Dress and Grooming

It is the policy of the district to allow for individual expression as it relates to the dress and
grooming choices of its students. We accept the role of the parents and the individuals in these
choices and will continue to support those choices when possible. Our number one process,
however, is the education of our students in an environment that is free from distractions and
disruptions. Besides educating our students, we are also responsible for teaching them what is
necessary in order to be successful citizens. With these processes guiding our decisions, we put in
place this policy for student dress and grooming. The district allows for enforcement of this policy
to fall under the Principals responsibilities and allows for the Principal to utilize the district Code
of Conduct and Step System to guide his/her decisions as they relate to violations.
Dress: Students at all levels must wear to school and/or school functions neat, clean,
appropriate clothing that meets the standards of an educational environment and does not allow for
the distraction or disruption of others. Any clothing that may disrupt the educational process of the
school or is unsafe will not be acceptable and students will be subject to discipline under the
districts Code of Conduct.
Clothing must be appropriate and cover undergarment wear as well as private areas of
the body, this includes while a student is standing still or while engaging in normal daily
movement.
Clothing articles with slogans and/or pictures of a sexual nature, or containing profanity,
or illegal substances, or violent imagery on them will not be permitted.
Pants must be worn around waist and belted appropriately.
No head coverings are permitted indoors (hats, bandannas, scarves), unless for religious
purposes.
Shoes must be worn at all times. Flip-flops, heels, Heelys, sandals, and Crocs
deemed unsafe for outdoor play on woodchips (Elementary) will not be allowed.
Any other item of clothing that causes distraction or disruption will result in a violation of this
policy.
Grooming: Students should be physically clean, neat, and well groomed at all times. This
includes following the outlined dress policies above and the students body and hair. Again, this
policy recognizes the students right to individualism so long as it does not cause any disturbance in
the educational process. Examples include, but are not limited to, un-natural hair colors (red, blue,
green, etc.), extreme haircuts (mohawks, shaved logos, etc.), and un-kept head and facial hair.

The enforcement of this policy is the responsibility of all school employees. The disciplining of
students per the district Code of Conduct will be handled by building administrators should any
violation cause a disruption to the normal school process. It is the students and parents
responsibility to know and understand this policy when making dress and grooming decisions prior
to attending school or any school function.
