Internship and Volunteer Placements

Liberty Development Foundation (LIDEFO) is a community based organization in Kasese,


Uganda, established in 2002 to support practices that accelerate the progress of human
development and contribute to eradicating poverty and extreme hunger in Kasese District. The
aim of the organization is to economically empower people and offer quality services that
enhance income-generating activities and sustainable rural livelihoods. Registered with the
Uganda National NGO Board, the organization is solely run by volunteers.
LIDEFO has four main programs: (1) Beekeeping and honey processing; (2) Training and
Education (Liberty College); (3) Women and youth microenterprise development; and (4)
Environmental protection. The organization is currently seeking volunteers/interns who are
eager to work towards strengthening its programs and advancing the organizations scope and
reach. Following is a description of the intern/volunteer placements available andfrequently
asked questions.
While the positions listed below require filling, and are LIDEFOs most pressing needs, the staff
are happy to work creatively with those interested in tailoring an internship and/or volunteer
experience to meet the skills and expertise of the candidate. LIDEFO welcomes all applicants,
and encourages them to be in touch with Mr. Daniel Ngangasi II to express interest and discuss
the possibilities of working with the organization.

(1) Intern/Volunteer Placement in LIDEFOs Beekeeping and Honey Processing Program


Background of Program: One of LIDEFOs flagship programs is its Beekeeping and Honey
Processing Programs. Currently there are approximately 700 subsistence agricultural farmers in
the Kasese District who are engaged in beekeeping as an additional source of income and

nutrition. LIDEFO provides the farmers trainings on how to start and maintain a beekeeping
venture, offers regular mentorship, and in some instances provides the farmers wooden hives.
LIDEFO also purchases the honey and wax provided by its beekeepers, thereby providing a
market for their products. LIDEFO then processes the honey and wax creating products to be
sold in the marketplace.
Responsibilities:
Offer skills on beekeeping, harvesting, post-harvest management, and apiary
management techniques at the community level for groups of beekeepers and to
individual beekeepers as needed.
Improve the value chain by enhancing the beekeeping program at the community
(farmer-based) level and also at the honey and wax processing and production levels.
Strengthen the propolis and clean wax processing unit within LIDEFO.
Ensure the acquisition of wax smelter and cleaner at the LIDEFO beekeeping center and
promote wax products.
Design programs that encourage beekeepers to network with each other and to share and
learn best practices.
Qualifications:
Prior experience in beekeeping, harvesting, post-harvest management, apiary
management, honey processing, wax processing and/or wax production is required.
Prior experience in international development/volunteer work is a plus.
Strong management, communication and facilitation skills.
While a higher education degree is not required, a Bachelors degree is desirable and a
Masters degree is preferred.
Interest in development work and community based work strongly preferred.
Prior work experience in a developing country is a plus.
Must be a self-motivated and driven person willing to work in a team and on an
individual basis as required.
(2) Education and Training Advisor at the Liberty College
Background of Program: Certified by the Ugandan Ministry of Education& Sports as a formal
educational institution, Liberty College provides much needed vocational education and skills
development opportunities in Kasese. Currently there are approximately 280 students enrolled at
Liberty College. The diplomas and certificate courses offered through the College
include:Journalism1, Accounting1, Catering and Hotel Management1, Purchasing and Supplies
Management1, Business Management and Public Administration2, Tourism3;Computer Repair
and Maintenance3;Secretarial Studies3; Hair Dressing and Salon Management 3; Tailoring and
Garments Cutting3; and Nursery Teaching3. Additionally, the College offers language courses in
Swahili, English, French and Lukonzo (the local language), and computer literacy courses.

Responsibilities:

Support LIDEFO management in the development of Liberty College by providing


technical support to:
o Improve the status of the college as an institution of higher education,
o Improve current programming,
o Improve the teaching pedagogy, and
o Develop plans for visiting teachers.

Develop the level of education and training within the College by consulting with
and advising the Principal on program and curriculum development and recruitment of
capable staff.

Initiate programs that will improve the standard of Liberty College by ensuring a
higher level of academic performance by its staff and students, and by ensuring the
provision of a higher quality of diploma/certificate offerings.

Conduct regular workshops with tutors and students to develop skills relevant to their
future areas of employment including life skills and soft skills.
Qualifications:
Prior experience in teaching, management of an educational institution, curriculum
development, mentoring, and training.
A Bachelors Degree in Education, Education Management, Development Studies or
International Relations required. A Masters preferred.
Strong management skills, computer literacy, communication and writing skills.
Interest in development work and community based work strongly preferred.
Prior work experience in a developing country is a plus.
Must be a self-motivated and driven person willing to work in a team and on an
individual basis as required.
(3) Organizational Development Advisor
The main objective of this placement is to ensure that the programs of LIDEFO are strengthened,
sustained and contribute to the growth of the organization. LIDEFO programs include (1)
Beekeeping and honey processing; (2) Training and Education (Liberty College); (3) Women and
youth microenterprise development; and (4) Environmental protection.
Responsibilities:
Review, support and implement the existing development strategy of LIDEFO to
strengthen its programs and elevate the status of Liberty College into an institution
recognized as a university.
Work with LIDEFO leadership and staff to identify, develop, and implement innovative
strategies to achieve the organizations long term development goals.
Identify potential development partners and donors and develop proposals for joint
programing.

Establish a network of partners and volunteers to support the development and expansion
of LIDEFO programs.
Provide mentorship to staff.

Qualifications:
Prior work experience in organizational development roles required.
A Bachelors degree in a related field is desired. A Masters degree preferred.
Strong management and facilitation skills.
Strong communication and writing skills and computer literacy.
Interest in development work and community based work strongly preferred.
Prior work experience in a developing country is a plus.

(4) Business Management and Development Advisor
The primary purpose of this placement is to strengthen the Human Resources and structure of
LIDEFO as it is the core of the organization. Additionally, this position aims to ensure that the
programs in place are strengthened, sustained and contribute to the growth of the organization
and community.
Responsibilities:

Identify key areas requiring capacity development of staff and program participants and
develop capacity building programs as necessary.
Provide technical support to strengthen income generating activities in LIDEFOs
beekeeping and microenterprise programs.

Develop and supervise the business plan of LIDEFOs honey project.

Work in close partnership with LIDEFO leadership to identify potential donors, and
improve the organizations publicity at a national and international level.

Qualifications:
Prior work experience in business management and development required.
A Bachelors degree in a related field is desired. A Masters degree is preferred.
Strong management and facilitation skills.
Strong communication and writing skills and computer literacy.
Interest in development work and community based work strongly preferred.
Prior work experience in a developing country is a plus.

(5) Project Management

The purpose of this placement is to support LIDEFO in effectively managing its projects and
programs.
Responsibilities:

Oversee LIDEFO projects ensuring effective and timely implementation.

Develop monitoring and evaluation systems for current projects.

Identify and develop follow-up project activities.

Maintain project financial reports and write project narrative reports.


Work closely with project staff and identify areas of capacity development for

staff.

Collaborate with LIDEFO leadership and staff to develop new project proposals
and identify potential donors.

Qualifications:
Prior work experience in project management and/or coordination required.
Experience in monitoring and evaluation work is desired.
Prior work experience in a developing country is a plus.
A Bachelors degree in a related field is desired. A Masters degree is preferred.
Strong management, communication and writing skills and computer literacy.
Interest in development work and community based work strongly preferred.
Must be a self-motivated and driven person willing to work in a team and on an

(6) Fundraising and Business Development Intern/Volunteer
Responsibilities:

Identify potential funding sources and develop related project proposals.


Identify areas for new opportunity/project development.
Resource mobilization for infrastructural development.

Qualifications:
Prior experience in fundraising and new opportunity/project development is required.
A Bachelors degree in a related field is desired. A Masters degree is preferred.
Strong management skills, computer literacy, communication and writing skills.
Interest in development work and community based work strongly preferred.
Prior work experience in a developing country is a plus.

(7) Marketing and Communications Intern/Volunteer


Responsibilities:

Raise awareness of and promote LIDEFO at the regional, national and


international level.

Assist with the branding and marketing of LIDEFO and its honey project.

Develop communications and outreach material.

Create strong international and national partnerships and networks.


Qualifications:
Prior experience in marketing, communications and outreach work strongly desired.
Strong communication and writing skills.
A Bachelors degree in a related field is desired. A Masters degree is preferred.
Interest in development work and community based work strongly preferred.
Prior work experience in a developing country is a plus.
Must be a self-motivated and driven person willing to work in a team and on an
individual basis as required.
(8) Web Design/Development Intern/Volunteer
Responsibilities:
Design and develop LIDEFOs website.
Identify possible host for website.
Information dissemination and website maintenance.
Develop and maintain LIDEFOs social media presence.
Qualifications:
Prior experience in web design and development required.
Bachelors degree preferred.
Prior experience with social media is strongly desired.
Interest in development work and community based work strongly preferred.
Must be a self-motivated and driven person willing to work in a team and on an
individual basis as required.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
(1) How long are the volunteer/intern placements?
The volunteer/intern placements can range anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months or up to 1 year
or 2 years. LIDEFO prefers individuals who are able to commit to longer periods (3 months or
more), however, is happy to consider applicants who will join LIDEFO for shorter periods.
(2) Is there an age restriction for volunteer/intern placements?

LIDEFO is seeking volunteers/interns between the ages of 18-65 years. Placements at LIDEFO
are based on applicants skills and prior experience.
(3) Are the volunteer/intern positions paid?
As LIDEFO is a relatively new community based organization it does not pay an allowance to
volunteers/interns due to financial constraints. Participants are kindly requested to look for
external funding sources.
(4) Will I be provided lodging and accommodation?
Yes. For a small fee of $100/month, interns/volunteers will be provided a room with a bathroom
and kitchen area. LIDEFO is currently in the process of locating a guesthouse for
volunteers/interns. In such a case, volunteers/interns may be required to share a house with other
volunteers/interns or a local family. Please follow-up with Mr. Daniel Ngangasi II to determine
exact logistical details.
(5) What about food and cooking?
A cooking stove will be provided by LIDEFO to volunteers/interns so they can prepare their own
food. Kasese District is known for its fresh agricultural produce, fish and animals, therefore the
intern/volunteer will have a variety of choices for meals. The intern/volunteer can easily access
fresh food either from the local market or supermarket.
(6) What about transportation?
LIDEFO does not have vehicles; however, it is centrally located in Kasese town where public
transport is readily available. In the event of official field work, LIDEFO will arrange for
transportation for the intern/volunteer.
LIDEFO can make arrangements for airport pick-ups and drop offs for interns/volunteers either
through a taxi service or by bus.
(7) Will I have opportunities to learn the local culture and langue?
Yes. The intern/volunteer will have a local mentor from LIDEFO who will be fluent in English
and will gladly teach and expose the intern/volunteer to local traditions and cultures. LIDEFO
will provide all interns/volunteers with local language classes.
(8) What about leisure activities?
Kasese is known for its beautiful wildlife and national parks. Queen Elizabeth National Park is
one of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Uganda which is home to Elephants, Lions,
Crocodiles, Giraffes, and Buffalos among various other animals. Mt Rwenzori National Park is
another popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. Kasese is also close to a number of
other towns and districts which are popular destinations for those seeking leisure activities.
