Based on Evertson and Emmers (2013) suggestions for arranging a
classroom, the classroom should communicate to students how the
teacher expects them to participate in their class, in addition to their
philosophy of teaching. Therefore, I chose the arrangement of my
classroom to be group centered. To equally disperse my class of 24, I
divided my class into groups of four. This led me into arranging my
students desks into six parts. In addition, a part of my personal,
educational philosophy ties in with this arrangement: the students are the
center of the classroom. In addition to the desks setup, I included a
reading center in the corner of my room, so that students will be able to
read in a more quiet area during designated times. Technology is also an
important aspect of the classroom, which is why I included a computer

center. Lastly, I included a worktable for individual work time with the
teacher, which is a major part of an everyday elementary level classroom.
According to Evertson and Emmer (2013), there are five goals to a
room with good arrangement: The room being consistent with
instructional goals, keeping high traffic areas free of congestion, the
teacher is easily seen by the students, teaching materials and student
supplies readily accessible, and whole-class presentations and displays
are visible. Therefore, I designed my classroom based upon the five goals.
For many teachers, arranging a classroom can be very difficult,
especially when the classroom is of an average sized classroom. This size
issue leads to many congested traffic areas. My classroom is designed to
give students a multitude of options on how to get from one spot to
another. The desks are also placed where I will be able to see a wide
range of my students, from both their side and front faces. Hence, why
the desks are placed at an angle. In addition, I chose to leave enough
room between desks for both my ease of movement around the students
and for traffic control, which is both suggested by Evertson and Emmer
(2013).
Next, I made an area for both reading time and individual
instruction. Evertson and Emmer (2013) suggest that teachers need an
area where they can meet with small groups of students for lessons, group
projects, tutoring, etc. It is also suggested that this area should be placed

in which the teacher can be able to observe the rest of the class while
being at the worktable. Thus, I designed my worktable this way so that I
can effectively have individual work time with a small number of students,
while monitoring my students during work at their desks and/or the
reading at the reading corner.
The additional aspect of my classroom is the computer station.
Evertson and Emmer (2013) recommend that computers should be
placed where they can easily be checked to see if students are on task.
Thus, my computer station is placed against a sidewall, where I can easily
check my students. Lastly, Evertson and Emmer (2013) highly advise to
place all storage components to be accessible, yet not obstruct students
from seeing the board and other main aspects of the classroom.
While there are countless aspects to a classrooms arrangement, it is
vital that the teacher arranges a classroom in a way where there are no
barriers to the overall classroom environment and thus, students will be
able to flourish in their learning environment. Thus, it is clear that a well
thought out and designed floor plan is a key feature in creating a positive
learning environment.
