The Defense of Forgetting in Montaignes Essays
Summary
This paper is focused on the defense of forgetting in the Essays of Michel de
Montaigne. It criticizes previous interpretations of his writings and offers a close
reading of one of his less known essays entitled On liars because that essay
contains an autobiographical introduction which is focused on the ways in which
Montaignes forgetfulness preserves his honesty and righteousness and improves
his creative and cognitive capacities. The paper demonstrates how Montaigne investigated the (trans)formative powers of memory and forgetting and claims that he is
the first essayist who pointed out that both memory and forgetting could be harmful
and useful.
