Time required: 60 minutes
Materials and or technology needed: Computer with Internet access, paper and
pencil
Set-up or preparation needed: Access to Postgraduate center (if available), library or
place supplying computers and scavenger hunt worksheet
Format presented in: Class discussion with video followed by individual activity
consisting of scavenger hunt and group discussion afterwards
Academic topic / lesson: Mathematics: students will be calculating the mean, median,
mode, range and standard deviation of the data they find in their scavenger hunt.
State academic standard(s) addressed: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS.ID.A.2
Use statistics appropriate to the shape of the data distribution to compare center
(median, mean) and spread (interquartile range, standard deviation) of two or more
different data sets.
Academic (subject) knowledge needed by counselor: How to calculate the
aforementioned
Campus critical data elements indicating personal/social, academic or career:
Career goals and postsecondary education goals will be incorporated into the
importance of attendance.
Counseling core curriculum standard(s), competency/(ies) & indicators being
addressed (IE: A:A1.1, A:A2.1):
ASCA National Standards: Academic Domain standard A: Students will acquire the
attitudes, knowledge and skills to contribute to effective learning in school and across
the lifespan.

Academic Domain standard B: Students will complete school with the academic
preparation essential to choose from a wide range of postsecondary options, including
college.
Competencies addressed: A:B2: Plan to achieve goals
Counseling lesson / topic, if applicable: Postsecondary education, career goals and
attendance rates (MEASURE).
Synopsis of how guidance and academic lesson are related and integrated: Data
found in scavenger hunt will be explored and converted into mean, median, mode,
range and standard deviation for first 40 data entries (not all). The lesson can be
integrated into a math class.
Similar student experiences to connect to the content / topic (relevance): The
importance of attendance as a means to achieving a goal. Understanding what it takes
to get into college and connecting the effort they put forth in high school to having a
fulfilling and financially supportive career.
Procedure (include teacher and counselor role in the lesson): Ask the class about
career plans and what type of lifestyle they want to have as an adult. Explain the
options they have after high school. Discuss the importance of attendance for
graduating high school as a prerequisite to a fulfilling career and adult lifestyle.
Facilitate lesson. The math teacher will be present to assist in the collection and
calculation of data found through the scavenger hunt.
