Onceyoureready,goaheadtoparttwowherewelearnafingerpickingpatterntogowiththis.
Theblueshasarguablybeenoneofthemostinfluentialgenresofmusicinthepastcentury.
Thechants,spirituals,andsongsofAfricanAmericanslavesinthe19thcenturygavebirthto
thegenre,whiledescendantsofslavescarriedtheirlegacyintorecordedformintheearly
1900s.

Whenpeoplethinkoftheblues,theytypicallythinkofamanwitharaspyvoicesingingand
playingalongwithaguitar.Whilethisisacommonexpressionoftheblues,itsnotunlikelythat
intheearlytomid20thcenturypeoplewouldsingandplaythebluesontheirukuleletoo.
Inthislesson,weregoingtotakealookatoneofthemostpopularchordprogressionsin
traditionalbluesmusicknownasthe12barblues.Thebluesarecharacterizedbysimplicity,
repetition,rhythm,andpureemotion.

12barbluesisstructured.

12-Bar Blues Form & Structure

Beforewelearnanyfingerpickingpatterns,weneedtounderstandthestructureofthe12bar
blues.
Asyouprobablyguessed,the12barbluesismadeupoftwelvebarsormeasures.Each
measuregetsfourbeats.Onceyoucompletethesetwelvebars,yourepeattheentireform.
Therearethreechordscommonlyusedinthispattern:I7,IV7,V7.
Thechordsaboveareexpressedinromannumerals.The7nexttotheromannumerals
representthatthechordisadominant7thchord.Thefirstfourmeasuresofthe12barblues
areplayedoverthetonicchordI7.Thismeans,ifwewereplayinginthekeyofA,ourI7chord
wouldbeA7,ifwewereplayinginkeyofD,ourI7chordwouldbeD7,andsoon.
Thefirstfourmeasuresofthe12barbluesisplayedofaI7chord.Forthislesson,wewillplay
inthekeyofA,soourI7chordisgoingtobeA7(clicktoviewthefingerpositionforthischord).

Forthenextfourmeasures,wearegoingtoswitchtoaIV7chordfortwobarsandthenswitch
backtoaI7fortwobars.Again,ourI7chordisA7.OurIV7chordinthekeyofAwouldbeD7.

Asyoucansee,thestructureisprettysimple.Wecancreatealittlebitmoreinterestinthis
progressionbyusingsomevariations.

12-Bar Blues Variations

Thefirstvariationisinthefirstfourbars.TobreakupthemonotonyoftheI7,wecanuseaIV7
chordinthesecondmeasure.
Thesecondvariationisinthelastfourbars.Fortheninthmeasure,wewillstillusetheV7
chord,butinthetenthmeasure,wewillswitchbacktoaIV7chord.Intheeleventhmeasure,
wewillgobacktoaI7chord,andthenonthe3rdbeatofthelastmeasure,wewillswitchto
theV7chord.
TheV7chordinthelastmeasurereallyhelpsthe12barprogressiontokeepongoing.Thisis
becausewheneveryouplayaV7(oranyVchord)itwantstoresolvebacktotheIchord.
