Enduring Leadership Principles

I.

Understand Basic Leadership Qualities:

1. Stick to your values and be true to yourself. Lead to be a valuable part of the group, not
for selfish gains.
2. Lead by example - set clear, high goals and give each member the tools to achieve them.
Hold yourself to a higher standard but be sure to ask for feedback from the stakeholders.
3. Be visible and take time to learn and understand those around you. Be sensitive to their
needs, offer encouragement and wisdom.
4. Respect those around you. Be encouraging and accepting of the ideas of others.
Encourage participation, leadership and the development of new ideas.
5. Be humble - accept responsibility and criticism. Give praise easily.
6. Be honest and trustworthy.
7. Embrace change - be vigilant and open to new ideas. Plan for change and stay
knowledgable. Be positive and encouraging when introducing change. State clear goals and
make everyone feel apart of the process.
8. Encourage diversity and collaboration - it is always better to guide a group rather than
tell the group. When people feel apart of the process and that they have a stake, they will work
harder, have a positive attitude and accept change easier. Remember to be a leader not a
boss.
9. Value relationships. Work hard to build them and make yourself of value to others.
Share information. Never do anything to jeopardize these relationships and break trust.
10. Be personable and approachable - share, invite, call and write. Make every attempt to
make others feel important or valuable.

II. Believe in Ethical Leadership

I believe ethical leadership is a process in which a person in leadership influences others
through principles, values, beliefs or a code of ethics which is defined as morally right
behavior. It reflects a value system that develops as a result of cultural and world views, the
needs and rights of others, a sense of obligation to societal equity and justice as well as a
common goal. Ethical leaders must not only make decisions and act ethically, they must
also lead ethically. As a leader they must model ethical behavior, in the ways they treat
people in everyday interactions, by offering encouragement, taking the time to know each
of the stakeholders and by allowing time for discussion, collaboration and reflection . Ethical
leaders are able to put aside personal interests for the greater good of the community of
which they lead. They demonstrate a willingness to accept the ideas of others, and they
promote leadership in others by sharing it as much as possible. These leaders understand
the power of leadership, and importance of ownership and collaboration. They are willing to
accept feedback and ideas that are different from their own. When making decisions ethical
leaders put aside personal agendas for the benefit of the whole group.

III. Know the importance of Building Relationships

1. Creating relationships is a process. It is one that needs to be thought out and done
intentionally.
2. Relationships must be genuine, personal and involve trust. Trust must be respected,
earned and protected at all times.
3. It is important to create a relationship action plan.
-Make a list of individuals you interact with and prioritize them.
-Determine what you can do for those individuals, and share resources with them
-Be of use to them before you need them
-Make the relationship personal - send them personal rather than digital messages, take time to call
them, invite them to events.

IV. Understand your Leadership Style:

Know your own leadership style. It is essential that you aware of your own strengths and weaknesses.
Surround yourself with others who can balance and enhance your own qualities. If possible, know the
styles of others around you as well so as to better interact and work with them in the most productive
manner.

V. Recognize the Importance of Systemic Change

1.

Stay Vigilant - do not become complacent

2. Embrace Change - let go of the past and accept the present, understand that change is
happening everyday at exponential rates. We cannot stop it. Those who do not change will go
extinct.
3. Be adaptable to the situation and flexible in how you get there
4. Plan ahead for change
5. Have the courage to leave your comfort zone and try new things.
Change what you believe so you can change what you do
6. Visualize your goals to help you decide how to achieve them
7. Keep focus on your goals and get back on course when you veer off
8. Reflect upon your failures and successes - look for ways to improve
