This prize winning sonnet received 1st in Show at the Turnhead Group Spring Show, 2015.
It really encapsulates what the modern WI is about and celebrates our centenary with style:

Centenary
Centenary one hundred years
Since those amazing pioneers,
Inspiring women, paved the way
Towards our WI today.
Justice, tolerance, friendship, fun;
A chance to learn for everyone
(Our college teaching many a skill)
These values members treasure still.
Jam and Jerusalem are fine,
But so are wing-walking and wine.
As we move forward, lets be bold,
Inspiring women young and old.
Embrace the future with a smile,
And celebrate our birth in style!
Jean Apperly, North Duffield WI

Chairmans Chat
Hello everyone,
The first week in June 2015 will be remembered for a long time, and will go into the archives as a
momentous week. The Royal Garden Party went off perfectly, 8 of our members were presented to the
Royal Party, and I was presented to the Duchess of Gloucester in the Royal Tea Marquee. She wore a
beautiful pale blue dress and coat with matching hat and white gloves. She was lovely, very easy to talk
to and was interested how, why and when we joined the WI. Princess Alexandra, Countess of Wessex
and the Duchess of Cornwall were also present but I didnt get to meet them as they each took a
different group. Despite the windy weather the whole afternoon was awesome.
On Thursday, I hope that most of you who were not at the Royal Albert Hall managed to watch the
Annual Meeting either at screenings or in your own home. It was another wonderful occasion and quite
emotional at times. Of course, the visit by the Queen, Countess of Wessex and Princess Royal was one
of the highlights of the day. It was an unforgettable experience. It must be unique for an organisation to
have so many Royal visitors in one week.
It was a great disappointment to us that Ann Hutchinsons resolution did not get through but, despite
this, more people are now aware than before of the problems that need redressing in social care and,
maybe, it can be brought back to an Annual Meeting in the future.
We now need to look forward to the rest of the Centenary Celebrations
still to come. The party is not over yet, so get booking up for the remaining
events there is still a lot more on offer.
See you soon,
Best wishes,
Janice Whiteford.

NOTICE BOARD
We are pleased to announce that as a result of NFWI Board elections, Mrs Janice Langley
continues as Chairman for 2015-2016.

Advertising opportunity
I have been approached by Kelly Sowerby from The Press in York and the Gazette & Herald newspapers. They
would like to produce an 8 page pull out supplement featuring the WI in North Yorkshire East in September, the
Anniversary of the founding of the WI.
In order to fund the pull out supplement, Kelly is offering advertising opportunities to WIs to promote and
publicise their meetings, also to members who have family businesses, cafes, shops etc. to purchase advertising
space. This is a great opportunity to get involved.
Kelly has produced a media sheet with details and costings etc. - see separate insert in the Newsletter. Contact
Kelly direct to book your space as soon as possible.
If this gets off the ground the WI in our area will be advertised to a totally new and wider audience which,
hopefully, will produce lots of new members.

Federation Website
Do you have any stories and photographs which you would like to put on the
Federation website? Please email Jane Pearce on jane@brandsby.com or ring
01347 888607 for further information.

Calling all Prize & Bursary winners a request for tales of your visits and courses:
The prizes at the Spring Council raffle were particularly good this year, as they included many visits for houses,
gardens and attractions in this area. Would the prize winners like to write a short report (with maybe an
accompanying photograph) on their visits, as they take them up throughout the year and send it into the
newsletter? The lucky recipients of Denman Bursaries may like to do the same.

FEDERATION NEWS
RAMBLES
This years Federation Rambles will be coming to an end with the three Centenary Rambles organised in
August and September. The Events Committee is now looking at organising rambles for next year and the
Federation now has a new Walks Co-ordinator, Mrs Frances Langley.
If your WI would like to host a ramble next year, please get in touch with her on 01723 859086 or at
fa.langley@btinternet.com
We are looking forward to another year of wonderful rambles throughout the Federation in 2016

MAKOWER CHALLENGE
North Yorkshire East does it again! Following in the footsteps of Ann
Vitty and Hanneke Wood our very own skills coordinator Liz Perry has
come second in this years Makower challenge with her jacket. The
challenge was to make either a quilt or a wearable item that reflected
the inspiration that the WI had made over its one hundred years. Liz
chose to focus on the SOS Honey Bees and designed a wearable item
a jacket to incorporate as many Bee inspirations as she could.
Honeycomb patchwork shapes, appliqus of flowers and the
occasional Bee flying around to help with the idea!.
The lining highlighted several of the resolutions over the 100 years
And seemingly the judges felt that its overall design was balanced and guess what .FUN. Well done Liz.
If you would like to see the actual item then it will be displayed, with the other winners at the Harrogate
Centennial Show in September. Liz will be there Jennie Potter

not previously won a Doris Wilkinson Bursary. Full details of how to apply appear in this edition of the Newsletter.
Go ahead and apply.you could be a winner!
Did you also realise that Denman awards several bursaries and your WI Secretary has already received full details
of the 2015/16 bursaries as a Newsletter insert and via email. Just a reminder that the closing date for
applications for these Denman bursaries is Friday 17th July 2015 and you apply directly to Denman. WI
Secretaries have full details of how to apply. I hope you have already sent yours off and that you will be
successful!
I have just received the latest edition of the Denman Course brochure with details of courses from July 2015-June
2016. Copies will be available from the office shortly. The new brochure will also be available on line by visiting
www.denman.org.uk or by calling 01865 391991.
At the 2015 WI Centenary Annual Meeting, the Treasurer reported that Denman had financially broken even over
the past year. However National Chairman Janice Langley warned that Denman was not out of the woods yet and
it was a case of use it or lose it. Jean Hammond

PUBLIC AFFAIRS & INTERNATIONAL

Chairman: Glenis Wedzicha
The Members of this committee have an important role in the functioning of the WI
at all levels: they are the public face of the WI.
I am pleased to report that we now have a lively and workable committee of ladies with a variety of skills, all keen
to work together as a team. I acknowledge the sterling work of my predecessor as Chair, Freda Shaw, and with
the help of my team, we shall continue to progress in the true spirit of the tradition of PA&I.
This years International Day has been arranged by the Federation and appropriately relates to Canada.
The PA&I day on Energy: Powering the Future is the committees own centenary event to be held on Saturday,
10th October.
I hope to look at the various campaigns of the WI and investigate their progress in forthcoming months.
There are other events in the PA&I pipeline. Do keep abrest of them in the WI newsletter. Behind the scenes we
shall all be working hard keeping members informed of social issues and assisting them with interpretation of the
proposed resolutions put forward for possible debate at National level.
In Spring (2016) the science co-ordinator will be organising an overnight visit to Oxford. Date TBC.
In Autumn (2016) we shall arrange a second Great Food Debate at the request of the Members. Date TBC.

An Artists Palette through the Window

Look through the window on a typical day and what do you see? Colours: a good deal of green, hedgerows in
bloom, flowers. The colours are provided by chemicals, either alone or mixed in different proportions. The
chemical which provides plant leaves with their natural green colouring is chlorophyll. Green plants grow using a
special chemical reaction (Photosynthesis) in which water and carbon dioxide (from the atmosphere), in the
presence of sunlight, make food for the plant and in so doing produce oxygen. Chlorophyll was first prepared in a
pure state by the scientist, Richard Willstatter. He also provided conclusive evidence for the chemical relationship
between Chlorophyll in plants and a vital component for life in animals, the red oxygen-carrying pigment in blood
(Haem). Later, he branched out into various other colours in the plant palette, uncovering the chemical structures
of an important group of substances, the Anthocyanins, a family of blue and red pigments found in many flowers
and fruits. Willstatter was able to show how different combinations of these pigments in particular environments
can account for the variation in flower colours found in Nature. For his work in this area, Willstatter was awarded
the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1915.

Review: Presidents & Secretaries Days at WI House and

Burniston
Both events were well attended; members said they had
been informative and helpful, and a fun way to find out
about the roles of the officers. If youre a new officer or
think you might like to stand in the future, look out for the
courses which will be repeated next year.

Q&A
Question: What is the Moodle, and how
do I get started?
Answer: The MOODLE (Modular Object
Orientated
Digital
Learning
Environment) is the WI training and
resource site. You will find information
to help run your WI; downloadable
resources such as posters; and recipes,
craft and floral projects as well as news

SKILLS CO-ORDINATOR Liz Perry

Kiplin Hall
A huge Thank You to everybody who helped to make the North Yorkshire
East Federations 100 Shades of Green exhibition such a success!!
To think that it was over 3 years in the planning. We had meetings with all the federations taking part and we
travelled to Ripon, Kiplin, Durham, Thirsk. Then there were the meetings with members in the four areas within
our own federation (North Duffield, Worsall, Thirsk and Ebberston), numerous visits to Thirsk, extra visits to
Kiplin, phone calls, emails and this was just Jennie and myself! But none of it would have been worth it if it hadnt
been for the totally overwhelming efforts that our members made in providing the items for the Lady Waterford
Room in Kiplin Hall.
Sadly, limited space in Kiplin Hall meant that we could not show all of the items that members very kindly brought
to WI House. We had to make some very difficult decisions about what we could include and we were pleased to
be able to use the space to show a huge range of crafts from our WIs. We were able to include an amazing flower
display, fulfilling what we understood to be the theme 110 Shades of Green.
The whole exhibition itself was wonderful, showcasing a host of different and in some cases unique crafts from all
over the North. The atmosphere was buzzing: I dont think Kiplin Hall will have ever experienced such
enthusiastic chatter coming from more than 3,000 visitors over the 4 days of exhibition. Everyone was touched
by that special magic - the WI spirit.
Thank you

MEMBERS NEWS & VIEWS

Thornton Dale: Jam, scones and Le Tour
On Friday 1 May Le Tour came to Thornton Dale. The village had been decorated with bunting, banners and
painted bicycles to welcome the riders. Thornton Dale WI joined forces with the Village Hall to serve
refreshments, and provide a good vantage point to watch the riders pass by.

Several of our members baked, or donated tombola prizes, and came along to serve drinks, filled rolls and cakes,
and man the tombola stall.
Luckily, we attracted a good number of folk (both locals and visitors) and the weather stayed dry so people could
take advantage of the Village Hall garden. Whilst Le Tour passed us by in a flash of lycra and spinning bicycle
wheels, the buzz in the village and the enjoyment of everyone watching was a pleasure to witness. All in all good
PR for the WI and an endorsement of our organisational and baking skills. We even managed to recruit a new
member on the day!
100 Shades of Green Exhibition, Kiplin Hall, 16th -19th May 2015
The Inter-Federation Craft Exhibition held in May at Kiplin Hall,
near Richmond, was a great success. 9 Federations took part
being allocated a room each. Our room was bright, with a
lovely view of the lake, but fairly small. Some of the rooms
were large but dark, and some Federations had to share, so
we did well. The owners of the hall were not willing to move
items to accommodate the displays, and very protective of
their furniture so the eventual effect was made with a fair
amount of inventiveness by the organisers.
Our congratulations and thanks must go to Skills Co-ordinator,
Liz Perry, and her team who selected the items for display.
This was not an easy task as so much excellent work was sent
in, and the constraints of the room made selection difficult.
There was a huge amount of preparation work over 2 years
done beforehand by the committee, and I am sure that those
of you who visited the exhibition were well impressed by the
end result.

10

Overall the variety of crafts on display was enormous, and the standard of workmanship excellent. It was well
worth touring round a second time to make sure you had seen everything...did you all spot the picture of a very
young Roger Moore modelling for a knitting pattern?
There were crafts demonstrations thanks to the demonstrators and an excellent Tombola thanks also to all
of you who donated prizes.
Altogether it was an excellent exhibition of craftwork by the W.I.s involved, entirely suitable for celebrating our
Centenary.
Christine Field, Appleton le Moors WI
Centenary Garden Party, Tuesday 2nd June 2015, Buckingham Palace
I went on a coach from Worcester to Buckingham Palace to celebrate 100 years of the WI. Ending up on the
back seat of the coach I made two new friends Kate and Tracey, and met an old friend Karen. We spent a brilliant
and very funny day together, likening ourselves to 'calendar girls' on more than one occasion. The excitement
mounted the nearer we got to London.
Once in the grounds of Buckingham Palace we made our way
around the lake to the lawns the tea tents were on. The
gardens were beautiful; we imagined the young princes and
princesses playing as we strolled around. Two military bands
were taking it in turns to play. Once on the lawns we were
surprised when Beefeaters came down the steps of the
Palace towards us. Splitting apart they gradually made three
lanes for the Royal party to come down. We ended up being
between two lanes. Squashed together with lots of other
ladies it was quite hilarious how everyone was giggling and
made us all feel very young.
Eventually, after much wriggling and being moved about by various officials, the Royal Party finally made their
way, one down each lane. Camilla behind us, Sophie in front, and Princess Alexandra in our lane. People had
been dotted around the lanes to meet the Princess, 4 in front of us and 4 behind. She looked beautiful. Dressed in
silk, a turquoise skirt and gold heavily embroidered jacket, a straw hat with flowers. As she left the party in front
of us she turned and walked straight to me. What was I to do? I held out my hand and she shook it and I managed
a very small unrehearsed bob of a curtsy. She spent a couple of minutes talking to me, asking me where I was
from and how I had got there, of course I flew the flag for Whitby. I was amazed, I had not expected to be close to
the Royals let alone speak to Princess Alexandra.
11

Everyone made their way to their tea tent. Tea was as you would expect,
amazing. We sat on the grass as all chairs were taken, we attracted
attention from security men who maybe had not seen people sitting on
the floor. One even brought us ice cream! As the Royals left the bands
played again. Once they stopped an impromptu rendition of Jerusalem
was sung. I found that quite moving. Whitby was represented as I wore a
piece of Whitby Jet in my necklace and my trade mark Gulliver badge
came too.
In true WI style I stitched on the coach there and back. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take it into the
Palace otherwise I would have stitched on the lawn too. We left through the main gates of the palace, to find lots
of tourists along the fence, taking photos. We felt like Princesses. The sun shone all afternoon, truly a day to
remember. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to go.

The Women of WWII Memorial
As the delegate to the Centenary AGM for Appleton le Moors and Sinnington my
day began in rather a different (and certainly earlier) way to most, with a trip
across London from our hotel to Whitehall. Just before I was due to leave on the
Federation's trip to the AGM, I heard about a Facebook initiative to lay knitted
poppy wreaths at The Women of World War II memorial in Whitehall, in response
to the defacing of it in recent weeks.
Having heard about the poppy wreath laying so late in the day, I wasn't sure I
could make one in time but after two days of smoking knitting needles I had
enough poppies made. I then looked around for a suitable ring to attach the
poppies to and with no time to get to a craft shop, I'm afraid my two dogs, Maggie
and Nell, had to do their bit and donate their rubber ring for the cause, which was
duly covered in knitting. I did promise to bring them a squeaky policeman back
from London in exchange!

12

So as near dawn as was practicable I set off from our hotel to

meet up with other WI members from across the country at
the memorial... Our presence in Whitehall certainly caused
quite a stir: police officers guarding Downing Street, a few
yards away, were keen to see what we were up to, London
bus and van drivers hooted their horns in support as we laid
our wreaths at the memorial, and tweets sent were followed
up with interviews on BBC radio stations across the country.
It was a huge privilege and pleasure to take part in this
initiative in memory of ALL those women, my own Mum
included, who have played such an important part in conflicts
down the years, both at war and on the home front, and
demonstrate our support for those who still serve. Coming
together with these fabulous young WI members in Whitehall
is a memory that will stay with me always.
With the wreaths laid it was a quick tube ride back to Kensington, a change of shoes, and down to the hotel dining
room ready for breakfast and the AGM, which I will leave others to tell you all about...

NFWI ANNUAL MEETING, THURSDAY 4TH JUNE 2015, ROYAL ALBERT HALL,
Live Streaming of NFWI Annual Meeting in Whixley Village Hall
We shared our day with ladies from 12 other WIs, the atmosphere was good, and to sing Jerusalem in our small
Yorkshire village with the ladies in London was very moving. We served bacon baps, cakes, lots of cups of tea,
coffee etc... We broadcast from London on the Village Hall big screen and it was wonderful to see the Queen who
made it a very special occasion for us all. The speakers were all excellent, I think possibly Lucy Worsley excelled,
the WI research she did was excellent. It was a wonderful day many thanks to all the organisers.
Sue Bailey, Whixley WI Secretary

13

Many thanks to Whixley W.I. Who arranged a big-screen viewing of the AGM.
Throughout the day some 50 ladies from 12W.I.'s, both in NY East and NY West had the pleasure of watching the
full meeting. we sat cafe style with refreshments on tap all day long. We were able to sing Jerusalem and the
National Anthem along with all our fellow members in the Albert Hall.
It was a truly enjoyable day, and a privilege to be part of the day without having to travel far.
Well done Whixley W.I.
Jean Williams, Rufforth W.I.
Live Streaming of NFWI Annual Meeting at The Galtres Centre, Easingwold
Up to 100 WI members from the Ebor and Forest of Galtres Groups enjoyed the National Federation of Womens
Institutes Centenary Annual Meeting on Thursday 4 June at a live streaming from the Royal Albert Hall to the
Galtres Centre, Easingwold. They were able to glean first hand information and to benefit from proceedings as
they occurred, and to all come together in singing the uplifting Jerusalem (see photo 1).
The provision of the live streaming meant many more members right across the country were able to be involved
in this very momentous occasion in the history of the WI.
Added interest was provided by Jean Graves from Wigginton & Haxby WI who put together a display of members
magnificent craft items, many of which were recently exhibited at the Shades of Green Exhibition at Kiplin Hall
(see photo 2). Country Markets were in attendance over the lunchtime period and did a good trade with their
professional baking, and members were able to enjoy some social time over lunch before the afternoon session
began. A beautiful flower arrangement was created by Beryl Gatenby from Skelton WI, and this was the first prize
in the raffle, and was won by Sylvia Errington from Huntington & Strensall WI.
At the end of the showing members were presented with a slice of delicious celebration fruit cake (just like at
the Albert Hall) baked for us by Vera Luck from Wigginton & Haxby WI.
With many thanks to all who helped put this event together.
