Grade:
Grade 7
Unit: The Earths Crust
Disasters

Subject: Science
Topic: Geological

Driving Question: How Have Geological Disasters Affected Our

Lives?
Curriculum Outcomes: Comparesomeofthecatastrophicevents,suchas
earthquakesandvolcaniceruptions,thatoccuronorneartheEarthssurface(3114)

Expected Time: Approximately 4-5 classes of 40 minutes in length.

Sharing of presentations will take another 3-4 classes.
Resources: iPads (or other digital platforms). Internet access.

Lesson Procedure
Teacher does (I Do): Introduce concept and provide
handouts for all students. This lesson will be
conducted after some degree of subject work has
been done covering various geological processes.
For instance, volcanoes and earthquakes. Teacher will
also direct students to the flipped instructional video.
Various specific geological disasters will be decided
upon (to eliminate duplication). Student groups will
also be established.

Individual student work (You Do): Students will
research their specific geological disaster and locate
information relevant to the assigned components of
the task.

Group work (We Do): At the beginning of each class,

students will be reminded of the nature of the task
(specific items to be covered). During classroom
work time, the teacher will circulate to make sure
students are working along at a satisfactory rate.

Class share (We Share): Upon the end of student

work time, all students will present their projects to
the class. (I didnt grade the students on their
presentation skills, but more on their demonstration
of topic knowledge and their ability to answer
student generated questions.)

Lesson Wrap Up: Each class will end early with a wrap up of the
accomplishments of that specific class. Students can also take the time
to fill out a self-assessment of their level of progress for that day.

Differentiation/Modification/Enrichment: The best way to accommodate

specific ability levels would be to coach students with regards to the
choice of geological disaster they decide upon. For learners with specific
challenges and delays, consider deleting specific portions of the task. For
students requiring enrichment, consider supplementing specific portions
of the task. Encourage student input, What would you like to add?

Teacher Reflection: One of the key components to make this lesson

successful is guiding students to specific disasters. For instance, some
geological disasters have a lot more information available as compared to
others.
