I was selling cars at

Sunshine Ford (today known as Auto
Nations Ford in Miami Lakes). This was
my sixth year in the business, but my
first year in this dealership. Like any
other place, we were required to make
calls when not attending customers.
However, we always found time to
stay out in the lobby, our preferred
spot, which is a little far from bosses
and at the same time a strategic point
to watch who will walk in to shop for
a car. We would take turns, but with
exceptions.

I was not facing the entrance this time,

because I was caught up in the story
one of the sales people was sharing.
When abruptly, everyone disappeared
under my eyes. I turned around to
find myself facing a family of three,
a Chinese family. Usually, we run
towards the customer to greet them
in hope of making the deal of the day,
but this time everyone disappeared.
As usual I said, Welcome to Sunshine
Ford. Are you looking for a new or used
car? The husband responded: We
want to drive a new Ford Escort today.
I thought to myself, this is going to
be an easy deal, they know what they
want and they want to drive it today.
So I took them to the Escorts line for
them to choose the color, model and

chose a four door red Escort, not the

top of the line, but well equipped.
They decided that was the car they
were going to drive home, so we were
seated in one of the boot offices where
I took their information along with the
red Escort info and price. The window
sticker was something like $18,500.
I told them that was the selling price
of the car. The mark up on those cars
from invoice to window was only
about $ 1,500. He kindly said in broken
English, Yes we want to place an offer,
it will be a cash offer. We want to drive
it for the right price. I said, Of course,
let me get you the right cash price. I
went to the manager to request a cash
price. I was so surprised that all the
sales force and other managers were
there conducting a bid. Most of the
odds were against me. I was soon to
find out why.
The manager took a green marker,
scratched my numbers, and wrote
minus $ 300 best cash deal price. When
I faced my customer, I explained that
those models dont have big mark ups.
He kindly took my paper, got his black
marker out, scratched my mangers
numbers and wrote big numbers: $
11,000 cash is good price. He look
at me smiled kindly and sent me to
see my manager. I tried to argue, but
I remembered that everyone knew I
was a Christian, and because of that,
they were bidding against me.

Are attractive men more selfish?

hen it comes to
attractive men,
some women are
of the opinion that
they are more likely to be selfish.
And according to a new study,
they may be right. Researchers
from Brunel University London in
the UK found that attractive men
were less generous and were less
likely to favor equality, though
this was not the case for attractive
women.
Lead investigator Dr. Michael
Price and his team publish their
findings in the journal Evolutionary
Psychology.
This is not the first time a study
has investigated the psychological
effects of peoples attractiveness.
In December 2014, Medical
News Today reported on a study
suggesting people with averagelooking faces appear more
trustworthy, while research from
September 2013 found men with
wide faces may trigger selfishness
in others.
In this latest study, the team set
out to see how attractiveness
influences individuals attitudes and
behavior toward inequality and
selfishness.
The investigators say the
research was inspired
by a previous theory
suggesting that
when it comes
to competitions
for social status,
people who are
attractive tend to
reign, meaning they
have more to gain
by bolstering social
inequality.
To reach their findings, the
team measured the bodies
of 63 men and 62 women
using a 3D body scanner.
The participants were
given attractiveness scores
based on their body
measurements - including
waist-to-chest ratio for

6 | iCare Community Magazine

men, waist-to-hip ratio for women

and slimness.
Participants also completed a
personality questionnaire, from
which the researchers obtained
information on their attitudes and
behavior toward selfishness and
inequality. As an extra measure,
the subjects took part in an
experiment, in which they were
given money and asked to decide
how much they wanted to share
with another individual.

The perception of
selfishness in attractive
men may be justified
From this, the researchers found
that men with higher scores on
attractiveness were more selfish
and less egalitarian than men with
lower attractiveness scores. Women
with higher attractiveness scores,
however, were just as generous
and egalitarian than those with
lower scores.
Next, the team asked a group of
raters to look at the body
scans of all participants
and judge them
on attractiveness.
Another group of
raters was asked
to judge how

egalitarian and selfless the

individuals were likely to be in
reality.
The researchers found that the
raters thought more attractive
men and women would be more
selfish and less favorable toward
inequality. Dr. Price comments:
Our results showed that in fact we
may be justified in expecting more
attractive men to behave in ways
that are less favorable to economic
and social equality.
He adds that many studies
have suggested that wealthier
individuals tend to be more selfish,
but that these latest findings
shed new light, suggesting
attractiveness is at least as
important as wealth in influencing
these attitudes.
Dr. Price notes, however, that the
correlation between attractiveness
and selfishness was nowhere
close to being perfect, noting that
many attractive men will possess
generous traits. u

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

When I saw that, holy anger rose up. I prayed in my mind and my
heart and said: Lord whatever you do, dont let me lose my cool,
and added: Because they are bidding against me, I want to sell this
car.
My manager discounted another $100. My customer would go
up $100 and with a smile kindly add this is a good price. Four
hours later, I bought them and myself sodas. I turned the paper
upsidedown; there was no more space in it for writing. I was afraid
they might continue the game if I brought a new paper. I watched
them peacefully drink their sodas. I was also drinking and peacefully
smiling at them. When we finished, I said: It was very nice meeting
you and perhaps you should consider a used Escort. I dont think he
understood my broken English, but we shook hands and smiled at
each other. Then, they left. I went back to the office and they were
exchanging money from the bid. They looked at me and said why
you didnt throw them out after the first offer? I said, Remember,
Im a Christian I cant do that. I also said, Dont exchange money yet
because when they come back tomorrow for the car, it will be one
of the fastest deals ever. And of course, next day in the afternoon,
they were looking for me and ready to drive home the red Escort for
the last price we discounted the day before, which was about $100
over invoice. I did my paperwork as fast as I could. He was trying to
explain how other dealerships threw him out that morning.
The Lord answered my prayer. I did not lose my cool and I sold the
car. I was promoted to Leasing Manager not long after that.

and water

How many folks do you know who say they dont want to drink
anything before going to bed because theyll have to get up
during the night.
Heart Attack and Water - I never knew all of this ! Interesting.......
Something else I didnt know ... I asked my Doctor why people
need to urinate so much at night time. Answer from my Cardiac
Doctor - Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when
you are upright (legs swell). When you lie down and the lower
body (legs and etc) seeks level with the kidneys, it is then that the
kidneys remove the water because it is easier. This then ties in with
the last statement!
I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins out
of your body, but this was news to me. Correct time to drink water...
Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist!
Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the
body:
2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs
1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion
1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure
1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack
I can also add to this... My Physician told me that water at bed time will
also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are seeking
hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.
Mayo Clinic Aspirin Dr. Virend Somers, is a Cardiologist from the
Mayo Clinic, who is lead author of the report in the July 29, 2008
issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Most heart attacks occur in the day, generally between 6 A.M. and
noon. Having one during the night, when the heart should be
most at rest, means that something unusual happened. Somers
and his colleagues have been working for a decade to show that
sleep apnea is to blame.

Social media: how does

it affect our mental
health and well-being?
In 1971, the first email was delivered. More than 40 years on, social
media has taken the world by storm. Social networking sites, such as
Facebook and Twitter, are now used by 1 in 4 people worldwide. Such
activity may seem harmless, but some researchers suggest social
media may affect our mental health and well-being.

In 2012, Medical News Today reported on a study suggesting that

Facebook use may feed anxiety and increase a persons feeling of
inadequacy.
A more recent study, led by social psychiatrist Ethan Cross of the
University of Michigan, found that using Facebook may even make us
miserable.
On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling
the basic human need for social connection, says Kross. But rather
than enhance well-being, we found that Facebook use predicts the
opposite result - it undermines it.
But are such claims exaggerated? Or should we be limiting our use of
social media? Medical News Today looks at the evidence.

What is social media?

In essence, social media defines an array of Internet sites that enable
people from all over the world to interact. This can be through
discussion, photos, video and audio.
Facebook is the leading social networking site, with more than 1.2
billion global active users every month. The sites popularity is followed
closely by MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and Bebo.
The latest statistics show that around 42% of online adults use multiple
social networking sites. Perhaps not surprisingly, the majority of social
media users are under the age of 30, although the number of older
users is on the rise. Around 45% of Internet users aged 65 or older now

A Medical Miracle That

Doctors Cant Explain
Forty-year-old Ruby Graupera-Cassimiro had just had a completely
normal C-section, giving birth to a beautiful baby girl on September
23. But when her medical team moved her to the recovery room,
she fell unconscious. Suddenly, Rubynow a mother of twowas
in full cardiac arrest.
Jordan Knurr, MD, her anesthesiologist at Boca Raton Regional
Hospital in Florida, immediately intubated Ruby so a machine could
breathe for her. He called a code, and about a dozen other doctors
and nurses crowded into the room, frantically giving advanced
cardiac life support. For more than two hours, she was having lifethreatening heartbeats, Dr. Knurr says. Most scary was when Ruby
had a pulseless rhythmher heart was beating but not pumping
any blood throughout her bodyand doctors delivered constant
CPR compressions for 45 minutes straight to try to get her heart
working normally again.
After about two hours, her doctors knew there was no hope. They
brought her extended family into the room to say goodbye. After
Rubys family returned to the waiting room, where they, along
with a few nurses, frantically prayed on their knees for a different
outcome, the doctors stopped pumping her chest. They were
ready to call her time of death.
I was seconds away from turning off the ventilation machine
when one of the nurses shouted, Stop! Dr. Knurr says. Without
any medicine or CPR, Rubys heart began to beat on its own for the
first time in two hours. It is just indescribable.
It turned out that some amniotic fluid had leaked into the uterus
and traveled through Rubys bloodstream and to her heart. Called
an amniotic fluid embolism, it causes an air block in the heart and
prevents blood from flowing. These embolisms are rare, and we
dont know a lot about them, Dr. Knurr says. Usually the patient
passes away or has significant brain damage. (Her doctors dont
know what happened to the amniotic debris; they assume it
dissolved on its own.)
Not only did Ruby live, but she is in perfect health. Its almost
as if this never happened, says Dr. Knurr. Its a miracle. Im not a
highly religious person, but you just dont see this happen. The
next morning, Rubys breathing tube was removed. Four days later,
she walked out of the hospital with her newborn daughter, Taily without even a broken rib from all the chest compressions.
Someone else was running the show that day; theres no doubt in
my mind, Ruby says today. I dont know why God chose me, but I
know he gave me this life again for a reason. u
Asst. Editors Note: This story has a special meaning to me. My
sister, Krista Gorman, went through the same scare almost 14 years
ago while giving birth to her beautiful daughter Maggie. She too
was very fortunate to have survived the ordeal. We are very blessed
to have them both in our lives today.

1. If you take an aspirin or a baby aspirin once a day, take it at night.

The reason: Aspirin has a 24-hour half-life; therefore, if most heart
attacks happen in the wee hours of the morning, the Aspirin would
be strongest in your system.
2. FYI, Aspirin lasts a really long time in your medicine chest, for
years, (when it gets old, it smells like vinegar).
Something that we can do to help ourselves - nice to know. Bayer
is making crystal aspirin to dissolve instantly on the tongue. They
work much faster than the tablets. Why keep Aspirin by your
bedside? Its about Heart Attacks. There are other symptoms of a
heart attack, besides the pain on the left arm. One must also be
aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of
sweating; however, these symptoms may also occur less frequently.
Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack.
The majority of people (about 60%) who had a heart attack during
their sleep did not wake up. However, if it occurs, the chest pain may
wake you up from your deep sleep. If that happens, immediately
dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit
of water. Afterwards: - Call 911. - Phone a neighbor or a family
member who lives very close by.- Say heart attack! - Say that you
have taken 2 Aspirins. Take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front
door, and wait for their arrival and ...DO NOT LIE DOWN! u

Floridas Fuzzy Caterpillars

Have a Painful Secret
Its just about that time of the year again, when Florida doctors and
poison centers start warning residents about the puss caterpillar,
a particularly cute and fat caterpillar thats so fuzzy that you cant
help wanting to pet it. But you absolutely must not do that, as
anyone who tries is in for a painful surprise.
According to the Poison Center of Tampa, Florida, the puss
caterpillar is a stout-bodied and can reach almost an inch long
when nearly mature. It is covered in long gray and brown hairs
that make it look like very strange and lively lump of fur. However,
underneath this cuddly exterior are several cleverly hidden poison
spines. The toxin that can be injected by these spines is said to be
one of the most painful stings in the insect world, easily trumping
your run-of-the-mill wasp or honeybee.
Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein, the director of the Florida Poison Information
Center in Miami told the Sun Sentinel back in 2012 that he has
even seen patients pass out from the pain.
We dont see any deaths from it, but it is very painful, judging by
the number of people that just are out-of-control hysterical when
they call, he said.
And you might be too if an adorable looking crawly caused your
finger to feel like someone was driving a nail through it.
According to the University of Floridas entomology department,
the puss caterpillar appears twice a year, during early autumn and
spring. Later, it matures into the seemingly feathered southern
flannel moth - an insect that cant bother us nearly as much as its
childhood sting.
Interestingly, not everyone has a severe reaction to the sting. For
some, it just creates a burning and itching sensation and can easily
be treated with a roll of scotch tape.
Thats right, tape. The prolonged burning from the sting is caused
by parts of the spine actually embedding themselves in a wound
to exacerbate the pain. The Tampa poison center suggests that if
you remove the spines by repeatedly striping fresh tape off the
wound, the sting can then be treated like a standard bee sting using a cold compress and baking soda paste.
Still, if you have a history of allergic reaction to stings or suffer from
asthma, it is recommended you contact a doctor right away. u

COLORADO Pawn & Jewelry

The Pawn business is negatively misunderstood. Where can

you go if you need a short-term loan? What do you do if a life
event causes you to have an emergency cash need? You have
lost your job, and have to make your home payment, work is
slow, or your pay was cut. You are moving, and want to get rid
of some valuables? What do you do? You have some jewelry,
tools, music instruments, cameras, or other electronics that you
no longer use, YOU can turn these into cash! Sell them, or get a
loan at your local pawnshop!
The latest TV craze of real-life shows has a show featuring a
Las Vegas Pawnshop - Pawn Stars. This show has brought the
idea of Pawnshops to many American homes. It is entertaining,
showing certain characterspawnshop employees, who interact
with customers bringing various valuables and antiques to try to
turn a profit and raise some cash.
It is entertaining and a little far
fetched, as many items are things
like a civil war canon or even a
helicopter. Remember, this is for
TV, so it is not the norm. Most pawn
customers come in with some tools
or a wedding ring, looking for $80
to $500 to get them to their next
paycheck, or get them through an
unexpected life situation.
What can you expect from a
well-run pawnshop? Honest, informative, and caring service.
The Pawnshop employees are operating a business that makes
short term loans, or will buy anything of value. Of course, they are
looking to make a profit. It is a business. But like all businesses,
there are clean, friendly, well operated ones; and there are those
that are not well operated. Just like your local restaurant, some
serve great products with fast, friendly service, while others lack
in quality and service. A good pawnshop, will evaluate your items,
ask you your needs and intent, and try to make a good business
decision both for the customer and the business.
At Colorado Pawn, you will be pleasantly surprised at the

cleanliness of the showroom, and the friendliness of the staff. They

have a great selection of jewelry, from a $28,000 diamond to a
$129 emerald ring! You can find high quality jewelry at a fraction
of the normal retail price. Homeowners and construction workers
can find name brand tools such as DeWalt, Milwaukee, Porter
Cable, and Craftsman for a fraction of the retail price. Electronics,
like TVs, laptops, i-Pads, i-Pods, stereos, guitars, and much more,
can be purchased for great prices. Yes, most items are preowned,
but can save the buyer hundreds of dollars, and get the job done,
or offer hours of fun, at a fraction of the retail price.
So why the negative light, and concern about pawnshops?
Because the public has the perception that if its in a pawnshop, its
probably stolen or there is something wrong with the merchandise.
Once again, a common misperception. Pawnshops are required by
law to submit detailed paperwork
electronically of all merchandise
taken in daily, and have to obtain
personal information from every
customer selling or getting a loan,
so that if something is stolen,
there is a high probability that it
will be recovered by its rightful
owner through the local police
department. So the bottom line is
it isnt smart to bring stolen items
to a pawnshop, because you will be
caught and prosecuted.

Cover Story

A Well Run Business Even a Pawnshop!

So why is it good to have a well-run pawnshop in our

community? There are lots of businesses that are taking advantage
of the recent strong gold prices. State-wide businesses set up in
hotels, or advertising on TV to bring in your old, broken, or unused
gold and jewelry, and turn it into cash! Some even advertise to
send your valuables in the mail! Many of these businesses are just
buying this jewelry to melt down, and turn it into cash. Yes, your
local pawnshop does the same, but they also take a large portion
of this jewelry and refurbish it, then re-sell it to local customers.

a life of
Exercise is a key player in disease
reduction, optimal mental, emotional and
physical health, and longevity. Its really a phenomenal
way to get the most out of your life! Researchers found
that exercise reduces the risk of about two dozen health
conditions, ranging from cancer
and heart disease to type 2
diabetes, stroke, dementia
and depression. Exercise also
slows down the rate of aging
itself, even stimulating the regeneration
of the energy-producing mitochondria in your cells,
providing perhaps the closest example of a real life
fountain of youth as we will ever find.
If youre looking for a powerful way to boost your overall
fitness and get some serious results - fast - from your
workout routine, look no further than performing
squatting exercises.
This is one exercise that should be a part of virtually
everyones routine, as its relatively simple to perform,
requires no equipment, and can be done just about
anywhere.
More importantly, although squads are often
regarded as leg exercises, they actually offer
benefits throughout your entire body, including
deep within your core
Benefits of Squats:
Suffice it to say, a varied workout routine of appropriate
intensity is one of the smartest health moves you can
make, and adding squats to your routine is a must.
What makes squads such a fantastic exercise?
1. Builds Muscle
in Your Entire
Body
Squats obviously
help to build your
leg muscles (including
your quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves), but they
also create an anabolic environment, which
promotes body-wide muscle building. In fact,
when done properly, squats are so intense
that they trigger the release of testosterone
and human growth hormone in your body, which
are vital for muscle growth and will also help to
improve muscle mass when you train other areas
of your body aside from your legs. So squats can
actually help you improve both your upper and
lower body strength.
14 | iCare Community Magazine

2. Functional Exercise Makes Real-Life

Activities Easier
Functional exercises are those that help your body to
perform real-life activities, as opposed to simply being
able to operate pieces of gym equipment. Squats are
one of the best functional exercises out there, as humans
have been squatting since the hunter/gatherer days.
When you perform squats, you build muscle and help
your muscles work more efficiently, as well as promote
mobility and balance. All of these benefits translate into
your body moving more efficiently in the real world too.
3. Burn More Fat
One of the most time-efficient ways to burn more
calories is actually to gain more muscle! For every
pound of additional muscle you gain, your body will
burn an additional 50-70 calories per day. So, if you gain
10 pounds of muscle, you will automatically burn 500 700 more calories per day than you did before.
4. Maintain Mobility and Balance
Strong legs are crucial for staying mobile as you get older,
and squats are phenomenal for increasing leg strength.
They also work out your core, stabilizing muscles, which
will help you to maintain balance, while also improving
the communication between your brain and your
muscle groups, which helps prevent falls which is
incidentally the #1 way to prevent bone fractures versus
consuming mega-dose calcium supplements and bone
drugs.
5. Prevent Injuries
Most athletic injuries involve weak stabilizer muscles,
ligaments and connective tissues, which squats help
strengthen. They also help prevent injury by improving
your flexibility (squats improve the range of motion in
your ankles and hips) and balance, as noted above.
6. Boost Your Sports Performance- Jump Higher and
Run Faster
Whether youre a weekend warrior or a mom who
chases after a toddler, youll be interested to know that
studies have linked squatting strength with athletic
ability. Specifically, squatting helped athletes run faster
and jump higher, which is why this exercise is part of
virtually every professional athletes training program.
7. Tone Your Backside, Abs and Entire Body
Few exercises work as many
muscles as the squat,
so its an

Know the Impact of Retirement Goals

on Your Finances
Article 3 June 22, 2015
The concept of retirement has changed dramatically in recent
decades. Todays retirees are traveling, volunteering, pursuing their
hobbies and even working for money. In fact, as a retiree, you
can essentially do anything you want, as long as your health and
finances permit it. Through exercise, proper diet and avoidance
of bad habits, you can do a lot to stay physically healthy. And
by clearly identifying your retirement goals and estimating their
financial impact, youll know how to stay financially healthy
throughout your retirement years.

retire and connect these objectives to the money youll spend and
the money you may earn. By being aware of both your dreams and
your bottom line, you should be able to enjoy the retirement lifestyle
youve envisioned. u
This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward
Jones Financial Advisor.

So, what are your retirement goals? Here are some of the more
common ones:
Travel. Many people cant wait to see the world once they retire.
If youre one of these eager travelers, youve got more choices
than ever. Programs such as Road Scholar (formerly known as
Elderhostel) provide educational travel programs to virtually every
area on the planet. And, of course, you are free to journey on your
own. But however you decide to hit the road, youd better bring
your wallet because travel is expensive. One way of dealing
with these costs is to place a certain amount of money each year
in a liquid account that offers significant protection of principal.
Set aside enough money to cover all your travels for a year, and
when its exhausted, youll know its time to stay home for a while.
Rent or buy a second home. During retirement, many people
like to spend a few months each year in a more pleasant climate
or in a location nearer their grown children. If you are considering
a second home, youll need to decide whether you want to rent or
buy. Youll find considerable differences from a financial point of
view, so youll want to think carefully about your choice.
Pursue your hobbies. While you were working, you might
have wished that you had more freedom to pursue your hobbies.
Once you retire, though, youll probably have a lot more time to
do what you like, whether thats driving your classic car, painting
landscapes, golfing, fishing, building furniture whatever. Be
aware, however, that some people do get over-exuberant and
spend more money on their hobbies than they can really afford.
So have fun with your pursuits, but set a budget and stick to it.
Get back to work. Upon your formal retirement, you may decide
to do some consulting or open a small business. Any wages you
receive can greatly improve your retirement income picture. For
example, the more money you earn, the less youll have to take
out each year from your 401(k), IRA and other retirement plans.
(You will have to take at least minimum withdrawals from some
of these accounts.) Plus, if you make enough money, you may be
able to postpone Social Security for a few years, thereby increasing
your monthly payments when you eventually start taking them.
As you can see, your retirement goals will be closely tied to your
finances. So think carefully about what youd like to do when you

Health Tip

strange-but-true
health tips

1. Call your mom to beat stress

Mom might not be the first person you
think of if you want to decrease your
anxiety and stress. But while she might
nag you from time to time, she also
might be the best person to call if you
need a little TLC. A study published in
Proceedings B by researchers from the
University of Wisconsin Madison put a
group of girls ages 7-12 through a stressful
task and then divided them into three
groups: one group had 15 minutes in
person with their mothers, another group
called their moms and the last group
watched a film. Researchers found that
levels of oxytocinthe hormone linked
to emotional bondingwere increased
in both the groups that had physical
contact with their moms and those that
just talked to Mom on the phone. The
researchers also saw that the levels of the
stress hormone cortisol decreased in both
the groups that talked to Mom.

2. Eat more to weigh less

If you think the key to weight loss is eating
less food, think again. Eating small, healthy
snacks throughout the dayin addition
to your regular balanced mealswill
keep your stomach full and stop you
from running to the vending machine
with major hunger pangs at 4 p.m. But
keep in mind that not just any old snack
will dokeep them healthy and focus
on nutrients. Delicious, protein-rich foods

such as peanut butter, cheese and yogurt

are tasty snacks that can help improve
your metabolism and encourage muscle
building.

3. Slow down for running success

Running is simple, right? You just lace up
your shoes, head outside and put one
foot in front of the other. But what does it
take to be a successful runner? A study by
University of Ottawa researchers Bradley
Young and John Samela found that paying
attention to pace is what separated the
successful runners from the others. The
goal is to get your body to recognize what
pace youre going so that you dont burn
all of your energy at the start of a run.

4. Boost your energy with a glass

of water
Water is natures magic elixir. It improves
your oral health, promotes weight loss
and energizes you. Ordinary water,
researchers at Vanderbilt University
Medical Center found, raises alertness. The
scientists discovered that water increases
sympathetic nervous system (SNS)
activity. SNS is responsible for activating
the bodys responses under stress, raising
blood pressure, energy use and alertness.
Next time you need an energy boost, skip
the caffeine and turn on the tap.

5. Dont overdo the beauty sleep

Its important to get your sleepit helps
you feel your best, protects you against
diabetes, wards off heart disease and even
burns calories. But how much sleep do
you really need? A study by researchers
at the University of Birmingham School
of Medicine found that those that slept
more than eight hours a dayincluding
napswere 15 percent more likely to
have metabolic syndrome than those
who slept less. Metabolic syndrome is
a group of risk factors, linked to obesity,
which increase your chance of having

heart disease and other health problems,

including diabetes and stroke. The authors
of the study couldnt say if the extra hours
of sleep were the cause or the symptom of
metabolic syndrome, but they suggested
that long sleepers see health benefits
from reducing the amount of sleep they
get.

6. Boost brain power with music

To get you body in shape, you go to the
gym. What should you do for your brain?
Play an instrument! A study published
in Nature Reviews Neuroscience pulled
together data from around the world
studying the effect of music on the brain.
They found that musical training, or
any interaction with musicincluding
listeningimproved the brains ability
to handle communication. The research
reviewed showed that children with
musical training have better-than-average
vocabulary and reading ability. Musical
adults had more neuroplasticity, aiding
their brains long-term ability to adapt and
change. So every time you put on your
ear buds to listen to the music, be it Ravel
or Rihanna, youre improving your brains
fitness.

7. Improve your relationship to

protect your heart
Relationships arent always perfect, but if
you constantly feel anxious or needy, you
could be putting yourself at higher risk
of cardiovascular problems. People who
or felt like their loved ones could leave
them may actually end up with a broken
heart, says a new study by the American
Psychological Association. Researchers
found that participants in the study who
had attachment insecurity were strongly
associated with higher risk of stroke,
high blood pressure, ulcers and heart
attack. The researchers are now looking
into the health benefits of salving those
apprehensive feelings. u

squats cont.
Adding Squats to Your Comprehensive
Fitness Routine
As with most things in life, a balanced
routine works well, so youll want to avoid
placing too much emphasis on cardio,
strength training or any one type of activity.
Many public health guidelines still focus
primarily on the aerobic component of
exercise, but this limited activity can lead
to imbalances that may actually prevent
optimal health.

excellent multipurpose activity useful for

toning and tightening your behind, abs, and,
of course, your legs. Furthermore, squats
build your muscles, and these muscles
participate in the regulation of glucose and
lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity,
helping to protect you against obesity,
diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
8. Help with Waste Removal
Squats improve the pumping of body fluids,
aiding in removal of waste and delivery of
nutrition to all tissues, including organs and
glands. Theyre also useful for improved
movement of feces through your colon and
more regular bowel movements.
Whats the Proper Way to Perform a
Squat?
Squats have long been criticized for being
destructive to your knees, but research
shows that when done properly, squats
actually improve knee stability and
strengthen connective tissue.
Safe squat techniques for beginner,
intermediate and advanced.

1. Warm up
2. Stand with your feet just over shoulder
width apart
3. Keep your back in a neutral position,
and keep your knees centered over your
feet
4. Slowly bend your knees, hips and
ankles, lowering until you reach a 90 degree angle
5. Return to starting position - repeat 1520 times, for 2-3 sets for beginners (do
these two or three times a week)
6. Breathe in as you lower; breathe out as
you return to starting position

This is why its so important to maintain a

well-balanced fitness regimen that includes
not just aerobics, but also strength training,
stretching, and high intensity interval
training like Peak Fitness.
Recommendation for beginners: Do 2-3
sets of squats just two or three times a week
-- do it more than this and you will miss out
on important recovery time. As always, as
you develop a workout routine that works
for you, remember to listen to your body so
it can guide you into a path that will provide
you with the most efficient and effective
benefits. u

30-year-old Russian man

volunteers for worlds first
human head transplant
by Honor Whiteman - Medical News Today

Dr. Sergio Canavero, of the Turin Advanced

Neuromodulation Group (TANG) in Italy, first
spoke of his plans to carry out the first human
head transplantation in July 2013 - a project
named HEAVEN-GEMINI.
At the American Academy of Neurological and
Orthopedic Surgeons 39th Annual Conference
in Annapolis, MD, in June, Dr. Canavero
will present updated plans for the project,
addressing some of the previously identified
challenges that come with it.
Though researchers have seriously questioned
the feasibility of Dr. Canaveros plans, it seems
the first human head transplantation is a step
closer to becoming a reality; Valery Spiridonov,
a 30-year-old computer scientist from Vladimir,
Russia, is the first person to volunteer for the
procedure.
Spiridonov has Werdnig-Hoffman disease - a
rare genetic muscle wasting condition, also
referred to as type 1 spinal muscular atrophy
(SMA). The condition is caused by the loss of
motor neurons in the spinal cord and the
brain region connected to the spinal cord.
Individuals with the disease are unable to walk
and are often unable to sit unaided.
Spiridonov was diagnosed with WerdnigHoffman disease at the age of 1 and told
MailOnline that he volunteered for HEAVENGEMINI because he wants the chance of a new
body before he dies.
I can hardly control my body now, he said. I
need help every day, every minute. I am now
30 years old, although people rarely live to
more than 20 with this disease.

Donor body will be attached to

recipients head through spinal
cord fusion

Dr. Canavero told CNN he has received an

array of emails and letters from people asking
to be considered for the procedure, many of
which have been from transgender individuals
seeking a new body. However, the surgeon

says the first people to undergo the procedure

will be those with muscle wasting conditions
like Spiridonov.
The procedure - which is estimated to take 100
surgeons around 36 hours to complete - will
involve spinal cord fusion (SCF). The head from
a donor body will be removed using an ultrasharp blade in order to limit the amount of
damage the spinal cord sustains.
The key to SCF is a sharp severance of the
cords themselves, Dr. Canavero explains in
a paper published earlier this year, with its
attendant minimal damage to both the axons
in the white matter and the neurons in the gray
laminae. This is a key point.

The HEAVEN-GEMINI
procedure - which is estimated
to take 100 surgeons around 36
hours to complete - will involve
spinal cord fusion.
The spinal cord of the donor body will then be
fused with the spinal cord of the recipients
head. Chemicals called polyethylene glycol
or chitosan can be used to encourage SCF,
according to Dr. Canavero. The muscles and
blood supply will then be sutured.
The recipient will be kept in a coma for around
3-4 weeks, says Dr. Canavero, during which
time the spinal cord will be subject to electrical
stimulation via implanted electrodes in order
to boost the new nerve connections.
The surgeon estimates that - with the help of
physical therapy - the patient would be able to
walk within 1 year.
Spiridonov admits he is worried about
undergoing the procedure. Am I afraid? Yes, of
course I am, he told MailOnline. But it is not
just very scary, but also very interesting.
You have to understand that I dont really
have many choices, he added. If I dont try

this chance my fate will be very sad. With every

year my state is getting worse.

Dr. Canavero branded nuts

Dr. Canavero has previously admitted there are

two major challenges with HEAVEN-GEMINI:
reconnecting the severed spinal cord, and
stopping the immune system from rejecting
the head. But he claims that recent animal
studies have shown the procedure is feasible.
Unsurprisingly,
however,
researchers
worldwide are highly skeptical of the proposal.
Talking to CNN, Arthur Caplan, PhD, director
of medical ethics and NYU Langone Medical
Center in New York, NY, even called Dr.
Canavero nuts.
Caplan said the procedure needs to be
conducted many more times on animals
before it is applied to humans, adding that if
the technique is feasible then Dr. Canavero
should be trying to help paralyzed patients
before attempting whole body transplants.
And talking to New Scientist earlier this
year, Harry Goldsmith, a clinical professor of
neurosurgery at the University of CaliforniaDavis, said the project is so overwhelming that
it is the chances of it going ahead are unlikely.
I dont believe it will ever work, he added,
there are too many problems with the
procedure. Trying to keep someone healthy in
a coma for 4 weeks - its not going to happen.
Spiridonov says he is well aware of the risks,
though he is still willing to take a chance on
Dr. Canavero.
Hes a very experienced neurosurgeon and
has conducted many serious operations. Of
course he has never done anything like this
and we have to think carefully through all the
possible risks, he told MailOnline, but adds that
if you want something to be done, you need
to participate in it.
Though it not been confirmed when the
procedure will be performed, Spiridonov says
it could be as early as next year. u

If you want to communicate with

someone from across the globe who
speaks a different language, all you
have to do is laugh. Laughter is a form
of communication thats universally
recognized, which suggests it has deep
importance to humankind.
Its thought that laughter may have
occurred before humans could speak
as a playful way for mothers and infants
to communicate, as a form of play
vocalization, or to strengthen group
bonds. Even today our brains are wired
to prime us to smile or laugh when we
hear others laughing.
Yet, laughter is a largely involuntary
response; its not generally something
you can force yourself to do. Instead,
laughter is thought to be
triggered by mechanisms in
your brain and impacts
breathing patterns, facial
expressions, and even the
muscles in your arms and
legs.
It plays a role in your health,
too, and has many quirks
and mysteries that make it
one of the most fascinating
physical reactions that a
human (and certain other
species) can make.
10 Fascinating Facts about Laughter
Professor Sophie Scott, a neuroscientist
and stand-up comic, put together
these surprising facts about laughter.

1. Rats laugh when theyre tickled , and

the more they play together, the more
they laugh. Psychologist Jack Panksepp
first observed laughing rats in the 1990s;
he needed special equipment to hear
it, as rats laughs are very high pitched.

observing 1,200 people laughing in their

natural environments, Dr. Provine and his
team found that laughter followed jokes
only about 10-20 percent of the time.
Social laughter occurs 30 times more
frequently than solitary laughter.

2. Youre more likely to laugh around

others not because of jokes
If youre laughing, youre far more likely
to be surrounded by others, according
to research by laughter expert Dr.
Robert Provine. The critical laughter
trigger for most people is another
person, not a joke or funny movie. After

In most cases, the laughter followed a

banal comment or only slightly
humorous one, which signals that the
person is more important than the
material in triggering laughter.

the

3. Your Brain Can Detect Fake Laughter

Professor Scotts research has shown
that your brain can tell the difference
between real or staged laughter. When
you hear staged, or deliberate,
laughter, it prompts more activity
in your brains anterior medial
prefrontal cortex, which helps
you understand other peoples
emotions.

UNIVERSAL
LANGUAGE of

Laughter
By Dr. Mercola

This suggests your brain

automatically goes to work
deciphering why someone
is deliberately laughing.

4. Laughter Is Contagious
The saying laugh and the
whole world laughs with
you is more than just an
expression: laughter really is
contagious.
The sound of laughter triggers
regions in the premotor cortical region
of your
brain, which is involved in moving your
facial muscles to correspond with sound
and prepare to join in.
5. Jokes are funnier if you know the
comedian
Familiarity is a key part of humor and
laughter, and research shows people
find jokes told by famous comedians to
be funnier than the same joke told by
someone theyre not familiar with.
6. Laughing burns calories
Laughing raises both your energy
expenditure and heart rate by about 10
percent to 20 percent. This means you
could burn about 10-40 calories by
laughing for 10 to 15 minutes. While this
sounds good in theory, youd have to
laugh solidly for an hour or more for this
calorie burning to have any meaningful
effect.

Home blood pressure monitors:

how do they stack up?

dvances
in
wearable
technology, mobile devices
and apps mean that consumer
health care monitors are set to
become ever more integrated with our
day-to-day lives. In the first of a new
series of features rounding up available
consumer health technology, we take
a look at a selection of the best home
blood pressure monitors currently
available to buy.

Omron
BP786
Omron is one of the most established brands
on the home blood pressure (BP) monitor
market. And judging by some of the online
user reviews of their products, Omron is one
of the first names doctors recommend to
patients who are considering purchasing
their own BP monitor, which would seem
to justify their #1 Doctor Recommended
Brand strapline.
The company boasts an almost bewildering
range of 21 BP monitors for sale - the
majority of which are for use on the upper
arm, although they also offer a small range
of wrist-mounted monitors.
Omron kindly sent us their BP786 monitor
for review, which is the latest device in their
popular 10 series. Currently retailing for less
than $80, the BP786 seems to have been
slightly less popular so far than its older 10
series siblings.
Although - like most modern home BP
monitors - the BP786 can hook up to a
computer or mobile device, a common
complaint in user reviews is that the device
appeared to have been rushed to market,
with the apps that allow the monitor
to interact with devices not released to
customers until some time after the physical
22 | iCare Community Magazine

product had launched.

Particular problems have been reported
with the Android app, although the Omron
is fairly unique in offering any Android
support at all, with most mobile-friendly
monitors integrating only with Apples iOS
platforms (for iPhone, iPad and iPod).

looking design, the BP786 cannot compete

aesthetically with the sleek, smaller,
wearable BP monitors - but overall, the
Omron is a reliable, simple does what it says
on the tin device.

For some customers, though - possibly

older customers in particular - one of
the strengths of this device may be
that you can use the BP786 completely
independently of any computerized
gadget. It also offers a superbly simple
interface - most users are only required
to press one big, blue button helpfully
labeled START/STOP.
This
no-nonsense
approach
may
sound unappealing to the tech-literate
gadget fiends among us but, for medical
monitoring devices in particular, usability is
the cornerstone of good design.
To take a reading, all the user need do is
attach the cuff to their upper arm and hit
the big, blue button. As well as displaying
your blood pressure, the machine will
display stats on your pulse and even identify
whether you have an irregular heartbeat.
That there is such a shallow learning curve
associated with the BP786 is a credit to
Omron. Although, I have to confess, it took
me a few goes to figure out how to get the
machine to take three consecutive readings
and provide an average of the results. A
design feature I really liked, however, was
how easy it is to attach the cuff, which can
be done without the assistance of another
person.
However, if you do like to take your blood
pressure readings with a friend, then Omron
have included a neat two-player feature,
where you can flick between two different
sets of readings with one switch, allowing
you to compare your readings with one
other person. The device can store up to 100
readings per person.
Those looking for bells and whistles may
be disappointed - and with a bulky, clunky-

Microlife WatchBP Home A

Omron may be the most popular brand
with patients, but Microlife would appear
to be the most critically acclaimed name in
consumer BP monitors. Its 3AC1-PC monitor
tops Find The Bests comparison chart of
BP monitors with an unbeatable 100 out of
100 score, although closer inspection shows
that the user rating is a lowly 1.7 out of 5.
Microlife sent us their WatchBP home A
monitor to review. Like the Omron machine,
the WatchBP home is a standalone device.
Although it does not support mobile
devices, the WatchBP home does come
packaged with its own software that
enables the user to analyze their readings
on a computer.
Interestingly, this software comes on a 3
CD-ROM, which may feel a little like a blast
from the past for those of us who have
progressed to Macbook Airs or notebook
machines, which typically no longer come
equipped with CD drives.
While other home monitors that we
looked at offered general blood pressure
monitoring, the WatchBP home is more
specifically marketed as a device to be
used by the patient in conjunction with a
physician for detecting atrial fibrillation.

To enable this, the device has two distinct modes: Diagnostic and
Usual. The Diagnostic mode should be selected under instruction
from a physician as it complies with clinical guidelines for measuring
hypertension. In this mode, two sets of blood pressure measurements
are taken on 7 consecutive working days. As the measurements have
to be taken at specific times during the day, the device prevents the
user from taking a reading outside of the specified times. At the
end of the Diagnostic period, the user is then required to take the
machine to their doctor for them to analyze the data.
It occurred to us that the Diagnostic mode could provide a solution
for patients who experience white coat syndrome, where blood
pressure readings are driven up simply from the effect of being in a
doctors office.
Usual mode, meanwhile, can be used for more ad hoc readings as
and when the user requires. One obvious advantage of this mode
over that of the Omron device is the Microlife machine automatically
takes three readings in succession (rather than just one) and averages
the results, without the user having to fiddle about to find a setting
that facilitates this.
Where it compares less favorably to the Omron device is in the arm
cuff, which is difficult to self-apply. Both the cuff and device were
also considered by the MNT office to be the least aesthetically
pleasing of the available devices, too - featuring a noticeably more
clinical-looking white and green-blue color scheme.
Not the sexiest machine ever, but for customers at risk of atrial
fibrillation, this could be a handy device for monitoring your health
in partnership with your doctor.
Microlife spokesperson Edward Gammon also told us that the
company is currently working on devices [that can] can send the
data directly into the
patients heath record. He
adds that the technology
exists already, but the
company are waiting for
the market to be ready.

QardioArm Blood
Pressure Monitor
MNTs editorial team were
handed a complimentary
QardioArm
monitor
at the Wired Health
exhibition in London, UK.
The QardioArm attracted
quite a bit of attention
back at the office - a true blood pressure monitor for the iPhone
age, everything about this wearable BP monitor is elegant and
sophisticated, from the packaging to the minimal design of the
device itself.
Unlike the Microlife or Omron devices, though, QardioArm cannot
be used as a standalone machine.
Before they are able to use the monitor, owners are required to

The Universal Language cont.

7. Laughing is good for your relationships
Research shows that couples who use laughter and smile when
discussing a touchy subject feel better in the immediacy and
report higher levels of satisfaction in their relationship. They
also tend to stay together longer.
8. Laughter requires timing
Laughter has a distinctive pattern. It rarely occurs in the middle
of a sentence. Instead, laughter tends to occur at the end of
sentences or during a break in speech, which suggests language
is given the priority. According to Dr. Provine: The occurrence
of speaker laughter at the end of phrases suggests that a
neurologically based process governs the placement of laughter
in speech.
Different brain regions are involved in the expression of cognitively
oriented speech and the more emotion-laden
vocalization of laughter.
Comedians also use the natural tendency for laughter to grow
and fade to their advantage, and will leave spaces at the end of a
sentence for the audience to fill in with laughter.
9. Laughter is attractive
Research by Dr. Provine found that women laugh 126 percent
more than men in cross-gender conversations, with men
preferring to be the one prompting the laughter.

In a review of more than 3,700 newspaper personal ads, Dr.

Provine revealed that women were 62 percent more likely to
mention laughter, including seeking a mate with a sense of humor,
while men were more likely to offer humor in their ads.
10. Some things can make virtually everyone laugh
While theres no one joke that makes everyone laugh, Professor
Scott found that one of the best tools for making people laugh in
her lab is a clip of people trying not to laugh in a situation where it
would be highly inappropriate to do so.
Laughter is good for your memory too
Researchers at Californias Loma Linda University looked into the
role that humor can have on your health. They broke 20 older
adults into two groups one that watched funny videos and one
that sat silently for 20 minutes. Before and after the session, both
groups took a short-term memory test
The humor group showed significantly more improvement on
the test, 43.6 percent compared to 20 percent in the non-humor
group. Those in the humor group also had significantly lower
levels of the stress hormone cortisol.
According to the researchers, laughter represents an enjoyable
tool to help counteract age-related memory decline in older
adults:
The studys findings suggest that humor can have clinical benefits
and rehabilitative implications and can be implemented in
programs that support whole-person wellness for older adults.
Learning ability and delayed recall are important to these
individuals for a better quality of life--considering mind,
body, spirit, social, and economic aspects. Older adults may
have ageassociated memory deficiencies. However, medical
practitioners now can offer positive, enjoyable, and beneficial
humor therapies to improve these deficiencies.
Laughter enhances immunity, improves sleep, and more
What else is laughter good for? Research has shown laughter may
reduce stress hormones and boost your immune function, while
also inducing optimistic feelings. Laughter has demonstrated
a wealth of physiological, psychological, social, spiritual,
and quality-of-life benefits, such that increasing numbers of
health care centers are adopting laughter therapy as a form of
complementary care. u

on clinical research and
meta analysis.

Diet and Kidney Health

Q. Who is most prone to kidney disease?
A. African Americans, Hispanics and
American Indians are at high risk for
developing kidney failure. This is due in
part to high rates of diabetes and high
blood pressure in these communities.
Q: Hi Liz, Do Plant-based diets protect
against kidney cancer?
A. Yes, plant-based diets appear to protect
against renal cell carcinoma both directly
and indirectly.
Q. Do lots of people get kidney cancer?
A. Over 58,000 Americans are diagnosed
with kidney cancer every year and 13,000
die.
Q. What seems to be the cause?
A. Nitrates from animal products and
sodium intake.
Q. Dont vegetables also have nitrates in
them?
A. Yes, some do. However they do not
produce the same negative impact on
health.

Q. How were the results?

A. Two-thirds of the patients on his rice-fruit
diet had reversal of kidney failure. People
had just a few months to live and then they
got better in a matter of 5 months.
Q. Has this been documented in medical
literature?
A. An editorial in New England Journal of
Medicine described Kempners results as
just short of miraculous.
Q. Whats in the Kempner Rice Diet?
A. Dry rice of 250-350 grams daily. The rice
cannot contain any salt or milk product.
The rice is boiled or steamed in water or
fruit juice without salt or fat.
Q. Is anything else allowed?
A. Fruit and fruit juice are allowed. Dried
fruits can be used as long as nothing but

Blood pressure monitors

first download the Qardio app from either the Android or Apple
app stores or the getqardio.com website. And here is where
we encountered a problem. Despite a raft of glowing customer
testimonials, at the time of writing, we found that not only did the
link to the Qardio app not work on the companys own website, but
the app was not available at all on the App Store.
Consequently, we have been unable to review this machine. It
does look very nice, though.
Developed through an Indiegogo crowdfunding drive, the
QardioArm is available to buy commercially at $99.

monitor. Helpfully, though, the device has an inbuilt sensor that

allows the app to guide the user into angling their arm into the
correct position.
We found both the devices and app to be very well-designed and
user-friendly (although it did crash on the third use). MyVitals
supports a variety of iHealth devices, so you can use the app to
track not only your blood pressure, but weight, calorie trends,
sleep data, physical activity, food intake and more.
It is very easy to manage all aspects of your general health within
the one app, which presents the data in easy-to-understand graphs,
comparing the readings to national recommended guidelines, and
it also allows users to set their own targets that track performance
against them.
The wrist monitor is currently for sale at just over $60, and you can
pick up the upper arm monitor for just under $90 - excellent value
when you consider standalone devices are similarly priced but
feature much less functionality.
For those of you with an aversion to the omnipresent trendiness
of Apple, the iHealth is clearly not for you. But health-conscious
app fans may well want to consider these monitoring products.
An advantage of the app-based system may be that updates will
become available as and when iHealth are ready to roll out bug fixes
and additional functionality, without the user having to purchase a
new device. u

iHealth Wireless Blood Pressure Monitor

The iHealth BP monitors are quite shamelessly marketed at the
Apple generation, even going as far as to adopt that notorious
lower-case i prefix. Again, these machines require an Apple device
and app to function, and there is no Android support.
iHealth sent us two of their devices to review - as well as the
standard upper arm-type BP monitor, we also received a smaller
wrist-mounted device.
The American Heart Association recommend to anyone using a
home BP monitor that they should use a device that measures the
pressure in their upper arm.
The wrist-mounted BP monitors are much more sensitive to body
position - to get an accurate reading, the user must position their
arm and wrist at heart level. But even if these steps are followed, the
readings from wrist BP monitors are usually higher and less accurate
than those taken at the arm, due to the arteries being narrower and
not so deep at the wrist.
Why go for a wrist BP monitor? Some people may have problems
taking a blood pressure measurement from their upper arm.
For instance, they may have a very large arm or find the BP
measurements painful.
We noticed a jump in blood pressure readings when comparing
the measurements of the iHealth wrist monitor to the upper arm

the timely process of sending letters through the mail. Social media has
built on this premise.
This is Facebooks mission statement:
Facebooks mission is to give people the power to share and make
the world more open and connected. People use Facebook to stay
connected with friends and family, to discover whats going on in the
world, and to share and express what matters to them.
This sums up what the majority of social networking sites endeavor to
achieve, and there is no doubt that the general public has succumbed
to the world of social media, perhaps a little too much.
use Facebook, increasing from 35% in 2012.
On average, Americans spent 7.6 hours a month using social media,
with the majority of individuals accessing social networking sites
through cell phones.
But what attracts us to social media?
In the late 1980s, the first commercial dial-up Internet service provider
(ISP) was launched in the US. Internet technology has certainly advanced
in the past 25 years, so much so that the words dial-up make most
people cringe.
Of course, one of the main attractions for connecting to the Internet
was, and still is, the ability to better connect with the world around us.
For example, the Internet allowed us to send emails as an alternative to

Social media addiction

Recent statistics show that 63% of American Facebook users log on to
the site daily, while 40% of users log on multiple times a day.
We all have our own reasons for using social media. Some of us like to
browse at other peoples status updates and photos, while others use
the sites as a way to vent their emotions. But according to Dr. Shannon
M. Rauch, of Benedictine University at Mesa, AZ, one of the main reasons
we use social media is for self-distraction and boredom relief.
Therefore, social media is delivering a reinforcement every time a
person logs on, she says.
For those who post status updates, the reinforcements keep coming in
the form of supportive comments and likes. And of course we know that
behaviors that are consistently reinforced will be repeated, so it becomes

hard for a person who has developed this habit to simply stop.
This behavior can lead to Facebook addiction. In fact, such behavior is so
common that researchers have created a psychological scale to measure
Facebook addiction - the Berge Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS).
The scale, developed by Dr. Cecile Andraessen and colleagues at the
University of Bergen in Norway, uses six criteria to measure Facebook
addiction. These include statements, such as you spend a lot of time
thinking about Facebook and planning how to use it and you use
Facebook to forget about personal problems. The researchers say that
scoring often or very often on four of the six criteria indicates Facebook
addiction.
What is interesting is that the researchers found that people who are
more anxious and socially insecure are more likely to use the social
networking site.
Last year, Medical News Today reported on a study that provided a
potential explanation for addiction to Facebook fame.
The research team, led by Dar Meshi of the Freie Universitt in Germany,
found that individuals who gained positive feedback about themselves
on Facebook showed stronger activity in the nucleus accumbens of
the brain - a region associated with reward processing. This stronger
activity correlated with greater Facebook use.
From these studies, it appears that many users who are addicted to
Facebook use the site as a way of gaining attention and boosting their
self-esteem. But can this behavior have negative effects on mental
health and well-being?

According to Enough is Enough (EIE) - an organization that aims to

make Internet use safer for children and families - 95% of teenagers
who use social media have witnessed forms of cyberbullying on social
networking sites and 33% have been victims of cyber bullying.
But Dr. Rauch believes it is not purely the use of social media that is
getting out of control, but our need to be electronically connected at
all times.
She adds: I think parents should be aware that their adolescent children are
living at a time where they are constantly on and connected.
I would encourage any parent to explore ways to encourage or even
mandate off time, not just away from social media sites, but away from
the devices. That is probably good advice for all of us.

Could Facebook be used to improve mental health and

well-being?
Although many studies point to the negative impacts of social media
on mental health and well-being, some researchers say they could have
the opposite effect. Social networking sites could be a useful tool in
identifying individuals with mental health issues.
Last year, Medical News Today reported on a study from researchers at
the University of Missouri, which claimed that Facebook activity may be
an indicator of a persons psychological health.
The team found that people who shared fewer pictures on the
site communicated less frequently, had a longer profile and fewer

The negative impacts of social media

In 2012, Anxiety UK conducted a survey on social media use and its
effects on emotions.
The survey found that 53% of participants said social media sites had
changed their behavior, while 51% of these said the change had been
negative.
Those who said their lives had been worsened by using social media also
reported feeling less confident when they compared their achievements
against their friends.
This problem has definitely gained recent attention, says Dr. Rauch.
We know that many people on social media sites often present
idealized versions of their lives, leading others to make upward social
comparisons, which can lead to negative emotions.
Furthermore, the survey revealed that two thirds of participants reported
difficulty relaxing and sleeping after they used the sites, while 55% said
they felt worried or uncomfortable when they were unable to log onto
their social media accounts.
In a more recent study, conducted by Dr. Rauch and colleagues, the team
found that social interaction on social media sites, specifically Facebook,
may have a negative impact on face-to-face encounters for individuals
who already have high levels of anxiety.
Another concern regarding social media use is cyber bullying. As stated
earlier in this feature, the majority of social networking users are under
the age of 30, and most of these are adolescents.

Social media cont.

Facebook friends, and were more likely to
experience social anhedonia - the inability
to encounter happiness from activities that
are normally enjoyable, such as talking to
friends.
Another study, from the University of California
San Diego (UCSD), suggests that using social
media may even spread happiness. The
research team, led by James Fowler of the
School of Medicine at UCSD, found that happy
status updates encourage other users to post
happy status updates themselves.
30 | iCare Community Magazine

Our study suggests that people are not just

choosing other people like themselves to
associate with but actually causing their friends
emotional expressions to change, says Fowler.
We have enough power in this data set to
show that emotional expressions spread online
and also that positive expressions spread more
than negative.
In fact, the researchers believe that this
viral spread of happiness is so strong that if
magnified, it could trigger an epidemic of

well-being.
If an emotional change in one person spreads
and causes a change in many, then we may be
dramatically underestimating the effectiveness
of efforts to improve mental and physical
health.
Overall, it appears that the exact effects of
social media on our mental health and wellbeing remain to be seen. But one thing is
certain; our use of social networking sites is
unlikely to fade anytime soon. u
