Analyzing a Scenario:

Unit 3

Technology
Integration
Workshop
Keely Abood

What is known:
Students want to use Skype to better learn English as a
Second Language.

Technology
What must be learned:
How to appropriately monitor Skype usage and
how to ensure students are not doing anything
disrespectful, illegal, or inappropriate.

Pedagogy
What is known:
Students are new to speaking
with Native English speakers.
Students may be more or less
social than other students.
Speaking with Native speakers
feels like relative real world
experience.
Speaking with Native speakers
will force your subconscious
mind to process the secondary
language faster after first few
discussions.
Skype is a way to become
more globally aware and
involved.

What must be learned:

o How students utilize this
assignment overall.
o If it is better to create partners
prior to giving assignment, or if it
is better to allow students to find
their own partner utilizing the
internet.
o How long this assignment should
be given (2 times a week for 6
weeks?) to be the most effective.
o If there is a disability that
prevents any student from being
able to fully experience this
assignment.

What is known:
This if conducted appropriately is more hands on than most classroom
activities.
Practice makes PERMANENT not perfect, practicing with peers who may
be getting a second language wrong will only cause the pair/ group to
continue doing it wrong habitually, which is neither beneficial nor
effective.
The conversations will flow better, and be more day to day
conversational with this method, rather than a forced robotic [limited]
vocab on several topics.

Content

What must be learned:

How to log and grade this as an assignment/ how to conduct this
assignment.
How to be consistent on moving forward with vocabulary (how to
appropriately assign conversation topics to ensure progress and
language development).
How to keep minimal negative drama in the assignment/ pairing/ and
classroom.

The plan/ How to:

The idea of this lesson is pen pals. Except you speak and listen on a
program that is accessible by everyone via multiple medias for fair
advantage.
You may have students pick their own pen pal from a list, pair them
randomly, or get together with another instructor and try to pick by
interests or personality (shy or outgoing). You only want to assign
them to speak 2 or 3 times a week, but the individual may choose to
speak with them more if desired.
It is highly recommended that you assign 2 or 3 topics to cover
during discussions, so that there is mutual understanding and
regulation for development for what you are going over in class.
