Ecologically Friendly

Resort
By Adam, Barron, Heather and Rosa
B1 Social Studies (2013-2014)

What is an Eco-friendly
Resort?
Use Natural Materials

Ecologically sustainable (Renewable energy sources,

Biodegradable materials)

Simplified decoration and operation style

Educational programs for guests on living green

Respect and carry on local culture

Give back to local community

Structure and Material

Structure
Disk/Egg Structure gives stability, flexibility and sense of community and equality

Rotational engines (no need of turns)

Engines rotate to still allow maximum push

Underwater sections used for machinery and storage space at the bottom (heavy, so
balance point is lower, thus more safe)

Above water sections is a dome structure, for guest rooms and lobby

Material
Internal structure made out of Titanium, stable,
non-rusting, light, strong not very eco-friendly, but
needed for safety.

Dome structure made of polycarbonate (light and

hard for safety)

Biodegradable, mostly carbon

Energy Sources

Solar Power
Photovoltaic

Found on calculators and rooftops

Uses semiconductors

When sunlight hits the semiconductors, it frees

electrons and creates an electric current

Put on top of the disk shape, cover entire top

Wind Power
Converts kinetic energy from the wind to more usable
energy such as electricity

To achieve maximum eciency, the wind mills are

around 30 meters high

When the wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air

forms on the downwind side of the blade. The lowpressure air pocket then pulls the blade toward it,
causing the rotor to turn. This is called lift. The force of
the lift is actually much stronger than the wind's force
against the front side of the blade, which is called drag.
The combination of lift and drag causes the rotor to
spin like a propeller, and the turning shaft spins a
generator to make electricity.

Can be connected to photovoltaic cells

Placed next to photovoltaic cells on roof

Hydroelectric
When the ship travels, water flows in, a tunnel,
turning a turbine, then when it goes out the back,
it turns another turbine

Bottom of ship

Biofuel
Uses mainly Biodiesel

Biodiesel comes from sunflower, soybean oils, animal fats, and waste grease from kitchen.

Emits less than half green house gases than regular diesel fuel which comes from oil

Ship receiving first shipments of Cellulose and Algae biofuels (more economical and produce
more energy).

Gas Filter and Muffler

Gas Filter
Burning biofuel still creates harmful
particles and smoke

A filter like the one shown (bottom right)

is made out of clay

Air goes into filter, and particles are

gathered in a cave like structure, clean
air passes through side tunnels

This filter is ecient because it does not

need to be changed, you can just wash it

Muffler
Engine noises harm sea-life/sea creatures

Muers dull down the noise

Use muers like on cars

two kinds of muers

First kind of muer is made in a special

shape, so that when sound waves go in, the
shape of the muer creates a sound with the
opposite sound wave of the starting sound,
thus equalizing it

The second kind of muer uses insulation

with a vacuum or feathers/other insulating
materials

Operation

Transportation
4 shuttle ships are connected to the resort

Detachable

Carry around 80 passengers each

For bringing visitors to and from the hotel

Fully electronically powered, no waste, only heat

House Keeping
The housekeeping in our resort uses environmentally
friendly chemicals

Even these chemicals are used rarely to lessen

damage on environment

Materials
The resort sheets, beds, pillowcases, towels,
mattresses etc. all use Organic, biodegradable
materials e.g. Cotton, biodegradable plastic,
Bamboo......

Soap and other appliances are held in bulk

containers

less material is needed

containers arent changed after each guest stay

Food
Food served fully organic, no pesticides or fertilizers (harm
environment, absorbed into water table, and fish are poisoned
and drinking water becomes unclean

Fertilizers contain too many nutrients and when nutrient rich

water goes into oceans algae grow too fast, unbalancing the
ecosystem by interfering with oxygen levels

Intensive farming for animals release noxious gases like sulfur

dioxide, carbon dioxide and ammonia into the air

Water Source
On the floor above machinery and
below observation deck is a boiler

Evaporated in boiler, and water is

harvested

Fully electronically powered

Salt used in kitchen

Water from Ocean filtered

Animals do not drink sea water, so

no need to share

Non Smoking Environment

Smoke is highly harmful to the environment

Smoking is banned in our resort

If found smoking there will be fines or other

consequences

Programs for Guests

1.

Underwater tour

2. Eco-friendliness

a. disk like vehicles that go underwater

a. when guests first arrive at the resort, they are

taught by employees on eco-friendliness

b. Internal structure made from same material as

resort

c. floor and ceiling made of Plexi-glass (transparent

plastic)

d. used so guests can see sea creatures

e. Vehicles fully powered by electricity

f. charged from resort

g. Tourists in vehicles, cannot interfere with the

natural life of sea creatures/plants

b. get taught on renewable and clean energy

sources such as wind and solar power (already
discussed above)

c. on ocean life and their needs (e.g. cannot have

too much excess noise, solved by adding muers
to engines)

d. global warming/pollution or harming environment

(transportation devices such as cruises often
release harmful gases into the air, our resort uses
only green energy sources and waste from biofuel
is filtered)

Programs for guests

con.
3. Water surface/Underwater observation
a. special floor right under water surface, where tourists can see the
bird Natare Ferrumavem (the species name means Iron bird) hunt (our
imaginary animal)

b. Guides teach tourists about the animal

Programs for Guests

con.
4. Speeches
Local Speeches

b. tourists add to the pollution, waste, and water needs

of the local population, for example, 85% of the 1.8
million people who visit the Great Barrier Reef in
Australia are go to the Cairns and Whitsunday Islands
which only have around 130,000 residents

a. Locals talk about culture

c. deforestation to create open beaches

b. How to preserve it

c. Gives back to locals (Discussed later)

Damage to Biome

a. lectured on what has already been done to the

biome

d. Tourist accommodation structures built directly on

top of coral reefs, starving the corals of sunlight/heat

e. Tourists destroy nesting sites for turtles

f. Waste emptied directly into water where corals and

other marine life live

g. Overfishing to support tourists

h. Local marine life harassed by tourists through

touching, stirring up sediment etc.

Giving Back to
Community
Relocation, huge problem

Hotel built on water, no eect on humans

Employees come from islanders

Allow Islanders to talk about their local cultures to tourists

Islanders teach about preserving culture and environment

Donations for green societies and for preserving local culture

Recycling
Waste grease, meat, intestines for meat and
wasted food burned as biofuel

Broken bamboo furniture smashed into pulp for

paper (mixed with small amounts of wood.

Waste Disposal

Human Waste
Turned into biofuel

Used for heat and electricity

Urine can be evaporated and the residues can also

be used for biofuel

Fabrics

Fabrics such as towels are made out of organic

materials

Turned into Biofuel

Containers and NonOrganic Materials

All of the Non-organic
materials are biodegradable

Can be brought to the island

and made into soil through
biodegrading

Everything is 100%
biodegradable
