Lesson Plan 4 - Technology

Unit Title Survival Guide to Noras Ark

Grade / Class 10th

Your Name Chris Cannata

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to use technology to research their animal and find its habitat, food consumption, space
needed for survival, and predators/prey.
Technology Standard: ISTE Standard 1: Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity
A. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
C. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students conceptual understanding and thinking, planning,
and creative processes.
Lesson Assessment Completion of a PowerPoint that includes the groups animal and the information that goes along with each one.

Initiation/Hook
As the students walk into class there will be different pictures of the animals that they saw at the Bronx
Zoo the lesson before. Along with these pictures will be a few facts about the specific animal. The
students will be finding their favorite animal, or an animal that they would like to research further, and
sit at that table.

Developing the lesson Indirect or Direct Instruction

After the students get with their groups they will have two different options to choose from.
The students will participate in a Near Pod activity lead by the teacher. This activity will give the
students the information they need to complete the research on their specific animal. The Near Pod
activity is very interactive with open ended questions, pictures, and a slide show.

The students will be given a Prezi Power Point which will lay out all of the components to the research.
This option is entirely student lead and they can control the speed at which they go at.

Guided Practice:
After the students choose what option and complete the developing the lesson, the teacher will show
them an example of what the students need to complete for the given assignment. The students will be
creating a presentation of their animal. In this presentation they will need to focus on their animals
habitat, food they would need on the ark, space needed, and predators/prey. All of this information will
be going into their presentation tool. Some of the ways in which they can present include; Near Pod,
HaikuDeck, ThingLink, BiteSlide, Prezi, or Google Slides. The teacher will also demonstrate some of
the various websites in which the students can use to find the information needed for this presentation.

Independent Practice :
The students will be researching their chosen animal online for this portion of the lesson. Each group
will be choosing one of the presentation formats and will input their research into this. After the groups
have done the research for their animal they will be presenting it to the class using the technology that
they have chosen.
Students can also use books or magazine articles to research their animals for the project. This
differentiation can help students who would rather use a book than the internet.

Assessment
The teacher will be assessing the groups to make sure that they have all of the information in their
presentation. This includes habitat, food they would need on the ark, space needed, and predators/prey.
The groups need to have all of these things in their presentation when it is completed.

Reflection Strategy
During the group presentations the students will be reflecting on how they thought the other groups used
the presentation tool. What aspects of the other groups presentation did they like? What could the other
groups have spent more time on?

Intrapersonal Objective and Activity (IA)
Student choice - At the beginning of the lesson the students will
be able to choose what learning style works best for them. The
students will be able to choose the Near Pod (teacher driven
instruction) or the Prezi (student paced instruction). This
differentiation will help the students to learn by their own style of
learning.

Interpersonal Objective and Activity (IP)

Group collaboration - Students will be collaborating with their
group to present their chosen animal to the class. The groups can
choose which type of technology they are going to use to present
their information to the class. This will require the students to
collaborate and bounce ideas off each other to create a successful
PowerPoint.
