To our wonderful Year 1 Parents/Carers

13 July 2015

We hope you all had a restful and relaxing break. Another busy term awaits us
all and this letter will detail upcoming dates/events and what your child will be
focusing on in Term 3.
Currently, the teachers are busy preparing the first excursion of the year to
Australia Zoo. In the coming days, more detail about this excursion will be coming
home. We will be in need of parent helpers for this excursion, so please keep
checking your childs homework folder for more information.
Please remember to send a piece of fruit or vegetable to school each day with your
child for Munch and Crunch. It is during this time (9.30am) that students have a
quick snack where they are encouraged to eat something healthy. Please
encourage your child to bring their library bag on their designated library day.
Many children are forgetting their bags! Our library is a wonderful resource and we
wish to encourage our students to use it. Please encourage them to do so.
Homework (Bug Club, home-readers, magic words etc) will continue this term.
Please encourage and support your child in reading daily and learning their magic
words. Below is a short summary of what your child will be learning about in Year 1
this term:
Religion: Students will be comparing stories of the Bible and how the stories of
the past tell us about God.
Maths: This unit focuses on recognising Australian coins according to their value.
Furthermore, they will be able to recognise and describe two-dimensional shapes
and three-dimensional objects. Lastly, students will learn to use appropriate
language of direction to move from place to place.
Science/Geography: Students will be investigating habitats and will be able to
identify a variety of habitats and what animals belong there. Students will visit
Australia Zoo to assist with their learning in this unit. Furthermore, they will
identify where features of places are located and recognise that spaces can be
arranged for different purposes. Students identify changes in features and describe
how to care for places.
History: In this unit, students will explore the differences in family structures and
roles today, and how these have changed or remained the same over time.
English: Students will be exploring and producing their own information report.
They will engage with a variety of texts for enjoyment, as well as listen to, read,

view and interpret spoken, written and multimodal texts designed to entertain and
inform.
Technology: Students will continue to develop their skills in various programs,
with a particular focus on coding skills and developing sequences. Students will
also plan, prepare and construct a diorama that showcases their animals habitat.
Students will continue to have specialist lessons (PE, Italian and Music) on a
Tuesday. Please ensure they wear their sports uniform on Monday and Tuesday. On
another note, as most of you are aware students in Prep to Year 6 have been
preparing for Catholic Education Week which is to be held this termyou may
remember this from last year. This year has been a little different for our Year 1
students. The Year 1 students will NOT be in the performance at St Columbans,
unless they are in the Junior Choir. Instead, they will be a part of the Visual Arts
Competition to be held at St Peters on Tuesday, 28 July (Week 3). Our Year 1
finalists will have their artwork showcased in the library on this night and winners
will also be announced. The Year 1 teachers are also planning to open up the
classrooms for parents to view all other artwork. Prep, Years 2, 4 and 6 will be in
the on stage performance to be held at St Columbans on Friday 31st July, which
you are most welcome to attend as well.
Next Tuesday at 2pm, Year 1 will be hosting a liturgy. As our Church is currently
under renovations, our liturgy will be held in the Mary Mackillop Hall. We look
forward to seeing you there!
